The Fayolle stream crosses the commune on both sides before flowing into the Petite Creuse river, which runs along the lower part of the commune, and has preserved its flora and fauna virtually intact. It is separated from the river by a steep ravine through which flows the small Châtrains stream. This ravine, Malla Vallis, meaning "Bad Valley", was so named because a horseman is said to have fallen to his death on its rocks. Malla Vallis to the priory and then to the alpine village built on its banks. The priory of Malval was founded in 1038. The Malval family was not mentioned until a century later, when the abbey of Prébenoît was founded in the parish of Bétête in 1140. Church dedicated to Saint Sylvain, whose cult is linked to the protection of children. Its construction dates back to the end of the 13th century. During the 100 Years' War, it was fortified and occupied by men-at-arms in 1448 and 1449 to repel English assaults. Today, the battlements built for its defense are still visible. This ancient feudal motte was relatively easy to defend, as it was surrounded by La Petite Creuse and a deep, steep valley. The château was built in the 12th century and occupied by Du Guesclin during the Hundred Years War. It suffered from the various conflicts and had to be rebuilt in the 14th century. Once an imposing structure, all that remains today is the fortified eastern gateway, the remains of the guard tower to the south, the keep and the open guardhouse at the gorge.

The church was never completed: the nave is missing, as is the south transept (destroyed in the 19th century). Ceramic finials made by the potter RENTY or his colleagues in the neighboring commune of MORTROUX between 1830 and 1880. The village of LINARD boasts four such finials: two on this house in the main street and two more at the presbytery (opposite the church, no. 26). The simple or figurative finial is first and foremost a utilitarian piece to protect the spike of the frame on three- or four-sloped roofs, but it is also an ornamental piece.

This cross dates from the 1850s. It was consecrated on the same day as the Chambonnet and Linard crosses. Mass was celebrated here on St Hubert's Day, and there was a procession on August 15 and St Sylvain's Day. These masses ended in the 1970s. According to oral tradition, those with no right to Christian burial (suicides or unbaptized persons) were buried next to this cross. This is known as the Cemetery of the Innocents. In local dialect, "reboulé" means rejected. The site also offers fine views over the Bonnat commune and the village of Goudenèche.
