The Latin origin of Champsanglard?s name, "Campus singulariser", and the presence of remains demonstrate a human presence dating from at least the Gallo-Roman period. It is bordered by the river La Creuse. Retained by a hydroelectric dam, La Creuse forms a 55-hectare artificial lake, the largest of the "Three Lakes" that follow one another on its bed.
Part of the commune is classified as a "NATURA 2000" zone for the richness and diversity of its flora and fauna, notably the small yellow-bellied toad.
