A route to Santiago de Compostela, from the Brou monastery in Bourg-en-Bresse to Ambronay Abbey, via Saint-Martin-du-Mont. Already 147 kilometers long, the department now boasts a new route of some 40 kilometers. Jacobean heritage: In Bourg en Bresse, you'll find heritage sites such as the collegiate church of Notre Dame, the royal monastery of Brou and Saint Martin du Mont. Route Day 1: Departure from Brou church (46.1979, 5.2353 *). The route skirts the SE monastery along the Hélène de Savoie alley to the Boulevard Charles de Gaulle, which you cross at the crosswalks to take the chemin de la providence. After 700m, turn left onto the track leading down to the Reyssouze under the high-voltage power lines to the entrance to Parc de Bouvent. Then take the chemin du lac, pass under the bypass, the chemin de Bouvent, still on the cycle track, and the route de Revermont for 800m, which is dangerous because there is no shoulder. At Bois des Bletonnées, turn right (SW): Chemin de la Goyatière then left-right into Chemin du Gourd (SSE). Cross the Reyssouze then, at the end, turn left onto the Montagnat village road. 2nd right, take the Chemin de la Craz down to the pond. Cross the Reyssouze again, then turn 3rd right onto chemin de la fruitière. At the end, left-right, follow the old wall of Château de Rivoire on chemin de Ravary to cross (SE) the A40 freeway. Continue along the Reyssouze, crossing it at "le Montet". At the end of chemin du Montet, turn left onto chemin de Mas Cruzin, where you cross the Reyssouze again and continue to the Tossiat cemetery. Turn right onto the route de Montagnat, then left onto the route de Journans to the village entrance. Take the small footpath around the large bend to rue du moulin for 50m. At the moulin(1), turn right onto chemin de la mine, then chemin des feuillées de Tossiat (GR®59 and GRP® tour du Revermont). At the fork, still on the GR®, turn left onto the Chemin du Fayet. At the end of the descent into the hamlet of Fayet, turn right onto chemin de la tour, then slightly right above a Cerdon winegrower onto a track. Cerdon winegrower. At the end of the descent, take the road on the right, then the 1st path on the left to Saint-Martin du Mont(2), a stopover village. The gite d'étape (sleeps 8) is on the left 300 m after the cemetery. The Gite de France, formerly the presbytery, is behind the church. Day 2: Leaving the village, take rue de la mairie (S) towards Place des anciens combattants. Go slightly downhill to the left to take the "montée de la Machuronne" road to the hamlet of "Confranchette d'en bas". At the hamlet's crossroads, turn right towards "Crozat", then leave the Turgon road on the left onto a wide track that joins the Suran river at "les Cochatières". Stay on the "Moulin des Craipes" road until you reach the Suran bridge, which you must cross to go up (SE) towards Saint André, the freeway and Pampier (on the GR P® Tour du Revermont to Pont d'Ain). At the bus stop, take (S) route de la ville for 700m, turn right onto chemin du Solliat, then left at the end onto avenue Philibert le beau for 250m. Still on the GRP ®, turn right towards the Catherinette chapel. Continue along this wide track to the "montée des Jouberts" path, which leads down to rue Louise de Savoie, where it continues eastwards for 50m. Turn right down the staircase to the downstream end of the old mill, then join the banks of the River Ain as far as Quai Justin Reymond, then take the staircase to the bridge. After crossing the Ain, take the left-hand sidewalk and go straight ahead, following the cycle path, to the Pont Rompu roundabout. From there, left to the Super U roundabout, then right on rue de la Batie. At the next roundabout, turn left to go around the Maison du fromage and find yourself on the RD1084. Take a sharp right (south) past a field of solar panels to Chemin de la Vigne Orset, opposite the quarry ponds. Turn left on this path for 200m, then right for 600m at the signs (history, flora and fauna), then right again to continue around the pond. 200m further on, you'll see the Via Lugdunum markings(3) in the direction of Ambronay. An exceptional natural area with century-old trees, this oak grove managed by the Office national des forêts is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Main tree species: Oak (71%), Hornbeam (15%), Beech (9%), other hardwoods (5%). An ancient forest Seillon was first mentioned in 1084, in a document establishing the boundaries of the Saint-Pierre de Brou priory. In 1131, the priory of Seillon was founded, returning to the Carthusian order in 1170. Ten years later, the Sires de Bâgé, then those of Saix and Coligny, donated the immense forest surrounding the priory to the monks. In November 1789, the forest was made available to the Nation and became state property. The Carthusian monastery was sold in 1791 and converted into an orphanage in the 19th century. Quality oaks. The Seillon state forest is rich in quality sessile oaks that supply the local and regional market. Seillon oaks have always been renowned for their quality, and were used to build the roofs of the Monastère Royal de Brou. An environmental role The forest limits the risk of flooding in urbanized areas in the event of flooding by playing an important retention role in relation to the La Reyssouze river. Its "buffer" role enables water to be stored during rainy periods and gradually released during dry periods. The Seillon state forest is home to typical lowland oak fauna. The main mammals are roe deer, wild boar, foxes, badgers, martens and hares at the edges. Among the diversity of birds, we note the presence of all woodpecker species, including the black woodpecker and the pileated woodpecker, emblematic species of ancient oak forests. Among insects, the most symbolic is the kite lucanus, a species attached to old oaks. Flora includes lily of the valley, anemone and periwinkle! The Bourg-en-Bresse apothecary consists of three rooms: an intact laboratory, a back store and a dispensary, with magnificent Louis XV woodwork housing an impressive collection of earthenware and flasks. It was the pharmacy of the old hospital, the Hôtel-Dieu, from the end of its construction (1782-1790) until 1963. Its laboratory is a remarkable piece of equipment, as it is rare to be able to visit one today. It allows visitors to immerse themselves in the chemistry of past centuries: copper stills, mortars, a cast-iron furnace (19th c.), a wine press, all kinds of pewter... The back room features the first earthenware pots, canon pots and chevrettes, as well as a library containing old books, including one from the 17th century. The dispensary's oak panelling gives the room a cosy feel. Some parts are carved to fit the corresponding ceramics, the famous "watch jars", three of which are inscribed with the famous Theriac. A journey into the pharmacopoeia of centuries gone by, through more than a thousand containers! Distillates, powders, ointments, pills, syrups, oils, dried plants...

The only museum in France that tells the story of a vanished profession: that of the mechanics. Presentation of about 350 machines, some of which are very rare, with comments from former mechanics. A surprising discovery. Over 350 mechanical and electro-mechanical typewriters, calculators, accountants and billers, including duplicators and early dictation machines, are on display. Some of the exhibits are quite remarkable, such as an 1878 typewriter, a Braille typewriter and a Chinese typewriter with 3,000 Mandarin characters. An opportunity to discover the technical progress made from the 19th century to the 1990s, when micro-computing put an end to mechanography. Visitors can use some of the machines.

Once part of the former Jesuit college, now Lycée Lalande, this chapel is a fine example of 17th-century religious architecture. It was listed as a Historic Monument in 1983.

This cool, green spot is accessible via a path below the village. The Vallière, which feeds the waterfall, rises in the hamlet of La Grande Fontaine and flows into the Reyssouze after crossing a 30-metre-high rock face. The river receives water from the "Bief de Veau", which originates at the "source des 30 Chiens", under the Côte des Vignes, and from the Tréconnas stream, which originates at the Chantemerle spring. The Vallière has a large, regular flow, and its course used to include three mills spread over almost a kilometer: - The Vallière mill, downstream from the waterfall, existed as early as 1349 and was demolished in 1920. Its stones were used to build the Bouvard cookie factory in the center of Ceyzériat. - Moulin de la Roche, just above the waterfall, which came into operation in 1792. - Moulin des Billets, built in 1836 above the waterfall On the trail of Jehu's Companions... In Les Compagnons de Jéhu, published in 1857, the great writer Alexandre Dumas set an important scene of his novel in a small valley where the Vallière flows, below the church in Ceyzériat. There, in a cave, the writer sets a deadly battle between a regiment of dragoons in Bonaparte's pay and the Compagnons de Jéhu led by their leader Morgan. The Vallière River It rises in the hamlet of Grande Fontaine and flows into the Reyssouze after crossing a 30-metre-high rock barrier: the Vallière waterfall. Pont de la Roche Bridge spanning the top of the Vallière waterfall, and former fortified village gate. This site has been awarded the Espace Naturel Sensible (ENS) label by the Ain department. Real natural and landscaped jewels of the Ain department, sites with the ENS "Espaces Naturels Sensibles" label are managed in such a way as to preserve the biodiversity they host, and are designed to be open to the public (with certain exceptions due to the fragility of the environment).

The collegiate church of Notre-Dame, the stuff of medieval legend, occupies a central place in the city of Burgundy, and particularly in the hearts of its inhabitants. Construction began in the late Middle Ages, but was not completed until 190 years later! Bourg-en-Bresse parish church. The exact name of this church is "collegiate co-cathedral of Notre-Dame de l'Annonciation". The term "co-cathedral" was officially coined in 1992, to define Notre-Dame as the secondary seat of the bishopric of Belley-Ars, which returned to Bourg in the 1970s after more than 4 centuries on the other side of the département. However, it was to be a cathedral that Notre-Dame was erected in the early 16th century, but the vagaries of history and the various conflicts between Francis I and Charles V decided otherwise, and Notre-Dame definitively lost its cathedral title in 1534. The beginnings of the construction are rather vague, and although work was certainly initiated at the end of the 15th century, 1505 is the official date, supported by a bull from Pope Julius II of the same year. The aim was to enlarge and embellish a Romanesque pilgrimage chapel on this site, already dedicated to the Virgin and known as the Chapelle Sainte-Marie de Bourg, whose origins date back to the 13th century. Legend has it that a shepherd found an icon of the Virgin Mary here, which, despite being deposited in the parish church of the day (located just a stone's throw from the center of the town at the time) systematically returned to the place of its discovery! It was as if Mary wanted to show the Burgundians of the Middle Ages that she wanted to be venerated here. The healing of Count Aymon of Savoy, who came to implore Sainte-Marie de Bourg, only strengthened Burgers' devotion to their patron saint. In the 19th century, a chapel to the right of the choir was completely refurbished and dedicated to the Virgin Mary, who over the years became known as the Vierge Noire, and is now venerated as Notre-Dame de Bourg, the town's patron saint. Her wardrobe has expanded over the centuries, and her vestments and the colors with which she is adorned depend on the liturgical season. Many of the church's furnishings are remarkable, such as the triptych donated by Nicolas Chichon (1523), the choir stalls (18th century), the Black Madonna altarpiece (19th century), Armand Calliat's white marble high altar adorned with enamel and gilded bronzes (19th century), Fyot's pulpit (1760), the great organ (17th-20th centuries), and the large choir windows by Eugène Oudinot (19th century)... Don't miss the hanging keystone and the tetramorph overhanging the choir, the Saint-Crépin et Saint-Crépinien stained-glass window (1530), the only original stained-glass window, and the contemporary stained-glass windows (1920s and 1960s). The bell tower, decapitated during the Terror, was rebuilt in reinforced concrete by departmental architect Tony Ferret, between 1909 and 1911. To mark the occasion, the belfry was fitted with 4 clock dials and a set of 23 bells; 17 bells from the Paccard company in Annecy were added to the 6 bells already in the belfry, most of which were connected to an automatic carillon still in operation today. The entrance portal is crowned by a wood-carved medallion depicting the Annunciation (under which the 15th-century cathedral was erected), surmounted by a conch in which is set a statue of the Virgin and Child by Coysevox (1855).

Situated on major communication routes, Bourg-en-Bresse has evolved with the times and events. Its rich past can be seen in the medieval houses, town houses and monuments, parks and toponymy of the city center. In Gallo-Roman times, "Burgus" became "Bourg", and distinguished itself as a defensive outpost of the capital of the Three Gauls, Lugdunum (Lyon). But it was above all in the Middle Ages that the town took advantage of its geographical position and developed a sustained commercial and craft activity. Even today, you can still admire some thirty houses belonging to wealthy merchants or craftsmen of the period, the oldest of which dates back to the 14th century. The end of the Middle Ages saw the construction of the co-cathedral of Notre-Dame, today the "grande dame" of the town center. A legend dating back to the 13th century tells of the Black Madonna. Later, wealthy aristocrats embellished the town with beautiful mansions, including the Hôtel de Meillonnas, now transformed into a contemporary art center (H2M).
