This fortified mediaeval city overlooks one of the loops of the Moselle. It was once the summer residence of the Bishops of Toul. The high part of the town boasts a wealth of heritage that visitors can explore on a visual and interactive route. Follow the “madeleine route” (a local speciality) and discover seven iconic signposts, and scan 14 QR codes on the sides of houses to get architectural details.

Explore this walking and cycling path, a bucolic 19.5-km-long stabilised sand route created along a former railway. It begins in Custines at the end of the Rue Claude Le Lorrain cul-de-sac, which has around twenty parking spaces, and currently ends in Nomeny. It runs through the lovely Mauchère valley, which takes its name from the little 8-km-long stream that runs through Custines, Malleloy, Faulx and Montenoy. The rolling countryside offers viewpoints over the orchards, fields, villages and woods. This “Voie Verte” path takes you on a discovery tour of local rural animals, including sheep, cows and horses. In fact, there is a strong probability that you will come across riders on the section that is open to them, near to the Diapason and Paquis stables in Faux.

The Moselle rises in the Vosges mountains at the Col de Bussang, but is actually the result of the merger of several streams originating in the Vosges mountains. It flows into the Rhine at Koblenz in Germany. Its total length is 560 kilometers, of which 314 kilometers are in France. The Moselle has been used as a waterway since Gallo-Roman times, enabling Roman battles against the Celts and the transport of salt produced in the Seille region. Throughout the Middle Ages, navigation was in full swing. Then, in the 16th and 17th centuries, navigation on the Moselle disappeared. At most, it was used to float timber from the Vosges. Today, the Moselle is a busy commercial river, particularly between Frouard and Luxembourg. Yachting harbors and secondary branches, however, provide shelter from the traffic. On the outskirts of Nancy, the landscape of wooded hills is very pleasant.

Le Bois Saint-Ignon: A 6.8 km trail through woods and other areas for exploring, making for a varied itinerary. It is also a smooth and easy circuit for mountain bikes. It is also pleasant for horse riding, but there’s a dangerous crossing of the D907. Cense Saint Paul: 6.5 km trail. On foot, this is a lovely walk with many glimpses of the village of Saizerais and even the Mousson hillock to the north. It is a smooth and easy circuit for mountain bikes, particularly in the anti-clockwise direction, but watch out for the horses that often use sections of the loop. On horseback, it is a rather short circuit, almost half tarmac, and the likelihood of encountering a number of other riders. Connecting trail: Coupled with the Boucle St Ignon and the Boucle de la Cense St Paul to create a longer hike. Exclusively through forests – cool temperatures guaranteed. For mountain bikes, the route is smooth in dry weather but can be extremely muddy after a long period of rainfall. On horseback, it is a pleasant ride by the D90B crossing is dangerous.

Museum Gaspar is housed in the residence of the middle-class family Gaspar from Arlon who had set up in this house (1893) that was built in 1842. It was renovated in 2004. The two most famous members of this family are animal sculptor Jean-Marie Gaspar (1861-1931) and Charles Gaspar (1971-1950) who was a photographer and a sponsor. He gave his house to the town of Arlon on the condition they make a museum of it, dedicated to his brother's work and that put into honour the history and the heritage of Arlon. At the first floor, theree are two restored salons identical to a middle-class salon from the early 20th century that show Jean-Marie Gaspar's sculptures. and the art and picture collection of Charles Gaspar. The rest of the first floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions of the museum that alternates artv and history. A religion room shows collections about the abbey of Orval and to the people's devotion at the 18th century, and also relics from the ancient Saint-Martin church. But the Masterpiece is the famous altarpiece Retable de Fisenne - a 16th century masterpiece from the Antwerp school. It was bought in 1893 by a middle-class family from Arlon, the family Gaspar. Jean Gaspar (1861-1931) was a sculptor. He was trained by the Antwerp sculptor Jef Lambeaux. His works are in bronze and in plaster and they are exhibited in the salons that have been restorated as they were in his house. His brother Charles (1871-1950) was a photographer, a collector and a sponsor. He gave this house to the town of Arlon. It hosts the library of the Archaeological Institute of the Belgian Province of Luxembourg and its secretary office since 1954. A wide part of the museum is also dedicated to temporary exhibitions about art and history of Arlon.

Built in the 16th century, this mansion belonged to François de Chastenoy, equerry and advisor to the Duke of Lorraine Charles III (1545-1608). The mansion was built to a very high standard and comprises three main buildings and two interior courtyards. The first courtyard features a remarkable spiral staircase leading to the galleries with their openwork balustrade. The decoration of the street gate, flanked by two pilasters surmounted by lion heads, is inspired by Antiquity. The mascaron that crowns the door represents either a jellyfish head or the head of François de Chastenoy's wife. The corners of the door are also adorned with branches. The late 16th century town house known as ‘Maison des Deux Sirènes’ (house of the two mermaids) takes its name from the sculpture on the corner of the building which depicts, not two mermaids, but two Tritons in an embrace. The richly sculpted front door is decorated with a head wearing a plumed headdress, and a ruff typical of the fashion of the period. When the French invaded Nancy in 1634, Nicolas-François, who had become Duke of Lorraine that same year, and his wife Claude of Lorraine, the daughter of the late Duke Henry II, hid in the house because the French did not approve of their marriage. During the night of 31 March to 1 April 1634, the couple disguised themselves as commoners and fled to Florence.

The Church of the Cordeliers (Eglise de Cordeliers) is named after the Franciscan Order whose members wore a cord around their waist. It was built in the 15th century by order of Duke René II, following the Battle of Nancy of 1477. Lorraine’s Saint-Denis (burial place of some of France’s famous kings), in spite of incurring damage through the ages, it still has some remarkable tombs. Come and take a stroll through the gardens of the Palace of the Dukes of Lorraine this summer! Built from the late 15th century onwards, the palace is an important symbol of the power of the Dukes of Lorraine. Its porterie, the main entrance on Grande Rue, is one of the earliest examples of Renaissance art in eastern France. Access through the porterie.

Built in the 16th century following the battle of Nancy, it used to be the residence of the dukes of Lorraine. Abandoned by duke Leopold who moved to Luneville ,in the 18th century, it became the Lorraine museum in 1848. It has a remakable gatehouse inspired by that at the french royal castle of Blois chateau. It combines gothic and italian Renaissance art.

The oldest fortification in Nancy, it was built in th e14th and 15th centuries and later became a prison until the 19th century. Notre-Dame gate, lying behind it, doubled up the city's defences at this point. It became a symbol of the Old Town.

The Weissemburger building Lucien Weissemburger, an architect and member of the Nancy School, built this building in 1903-1904 and made the ground floor his living quarters and studio. He worked with Jacques Gruber for the stained glass and Louis Majorelle for the ironwork. The wings of the building lead off on either side from a vestibule with a terrace rooftop.
