Ville Vieille

Nancy's Ville Vieille is the historic heart of the ducal city, a district of undeniable charm that stretches from the old town proper to the immediate vicinity of the Cours Léopold. It also includes a number of green and architectural gems, such as the Parc de la Pépinière and the majestic Place de la Carrière.

The district is an integral part of Nancy's "secteur sauvegardé", a status that testifies to its rich heritage. It is also home to one of the famous three UNESCO World Heritage squares - Place de la Carrière - which is elegant, discreet and remarkable.

A number of old arteries with evocative names - rue du Haut-Bourgeois and rue de la Monnaie, to name but a few - lead to the Cours Léopold. Built in 1778 on the site of the former rampart ditches, the Cours Léopold and the Place Carnot form a vast, lively open space.

The old town is framed by the Porte de la Craffe to the north, and criss-crossed by the Grande-Rue, the historic backbone that connects it from north to south. To the east, it flirts with the more recent city center, while to the south, the northern end of Place Stanislas marks its border with the Ville-Neuve district.
