Toile de Jouy Museum

Located in the charming Château de l’Églantine in Jouy-en-Josas, the Musée de la Toile de Jouy brings to life the legacy of the famous Jouy Manufacture, founded in 1760 by Christophe-Philippe Oberkampf, a visionary entrepreneur and printer. Created in 1977 in the very town where Toile de Jouy was born, the museum celebrates this emblem of French textiles — a painted or printed cotton fabric, also known as *indienne* — while carrying forward the values of its creator: entrepreneurship, humanism, and openness to the world. Since 1991, the museum has been housed in the Château de l’Églantine, bearing witness to the quality and expertise of the Oberkampf manufactory, active from 1760 to 1848. Its collections bring together nearly 10,000 pieces from the 18th century to today: painted and printed fabrics, sample books, drawings, gouaches, paintings, costumes, furniture, bed linens, as well as various tools and mechanisms linked to printing techniques. The production of Jouy-en-Josas is represented, alongside other French centers (Normandy, Alsace, Provence) and foreign ones (Great Britain, Italy). In 2022, the Musée de la Toile de Jouy inaugurated its new historical exhibition spaces dedicated to the 18th and 19th centuries. This immersive journey into the Oberkampf manufactory (1760–1843) and its 30,000 printed motifs invites visitors to step into interiors inspired by the Oberkampf family — a bedroom, a study, and a music room — and discover how printed textiles were used in furnishings. To complement the visit, an interactive digital installation familiarizes visitors with this remarkable textile heritage. The permanent collections highlight the history, printing techniques, and use of Toile de Jouy in both clothing and interior decoration. With the support of the Friends of the Musée de la Toile de Jouy, the museum regularly acquires new pieces — textiles, objects, costumes — from both the time of Oberkampf and contemporary creators. Many artists, publishers, and designers draw inspiration from Toile de Jouy to create their collections, contributing to the influence of this heritage. The permanent exhibition showcases the incredible creativity of the era’s designers through floral, geometric, and figurative motifs, while also presenting the evolution of printing techniques: wooden blocks, copperplates, and copper rollers. Reconstructions featuring pieces from the French National Furniture Collection evoke Oberkampf’s private world as a true visionary. ### Special Offer 🎟️ Enjoy **15% off all tickets** with the *Pass Malin*! French Museum of Photography

With more than 25,000 objects, a million photographs, a library and a unique technical documentary collection, the French Museum of Photography brings together one of the most important collections internationally. In 1960, two passionate amateurs, Jean and André Fage, opened an associative museum in Bièvres. For more than thirty years they brought together images and objects testifying to the history of photography. The Departmental Council of Essonne welcomes you to a departmental museum approved "Museum of France" since 2003. The French Museum of Photography offers a temporary exhibitions program that allows to rotate the museum three funds: images, devices and documentation. With an exceptional collection of nearly a million images, 25,000 materials, more than 50,000 printed documents (books, manuals, catalogs, magazines, posters, etc.), from 1839 to the present day, the French Museum Photography aims to tell the story and history of photography! How were pictures taken in 1850, during the First World War or at the end of the 20th century? How were images disseminated at a time when we did not know yet how to reproduce them in books and newspapers? How did chemistry make them appear in the darkness of the laboratory, long before computers, printers and digital networks are invented? Why did we move from a complex craft to a flourishing industry and a universal practice? What is the use of billions of photos produced, reproduced, classified, preserved and sometimes forgotten or discarded? Begin to answer these questions, and many others, by discovering surprising images, mysterious objects, amusing commercials... thanks to the museum, we try to understand our "civilization of the image", to form our critical eye, to discover the little stories that make up the great History of the image.

Park of Madame Elisabeth's estate

Just a stone’s throw from the city center of Versailles, discover a place full of charm and elegance: the Domaine de Madame Élisabeth. Nestled in a lush green setting, this royal estate takes you back to the heart of the 18th century. In 1783, King Louis XVI acquired this property and gifted it to his beloved sister, Madame Élisabeth. Since then, this exceptional estate has retained all the poetry and tranquility of its aristocratic past. An English-style park full of surprises Imagined in the 18th century for the Prince and Princess of Rohan-Guéméné, the park was designed by architect Alexandre Louis Étable de La Brière. Covering 8 hectares, it is organized around winding paths, groves of majestic trees, a mysterious grotto, and a stream originally fed by the Montbauron reservoirs. A remarkable site for lovers of botany, the estate once housed a collection of rare plants gathered by Le Monnier, Louis XVI’s physician and a passionate natural scientist. The park also included a vegetable garden, an orangery, and a dairy — witnesses to the art of living in the Age of Enlightenment. A romantic French setting In the 19th century, the estate was redesigned in the spirit of a romantic English garden while preserving its emblematic features: its picturesque grotto, preserved groves, and scenic vistas. Today, this idyllic setting invites strolling, contemplation, or family walks, far from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Madame du Barry's private mansion

Just a stone’s throw from the heart of Versailles, discover a hidden gem: the elegant townhouse of Madame du Barry, the last mistress of Louis XV. Nestled in a discreet setting, this pavilion is a testament to the splendour and intrigues of the 18th-century court. In 1772, the Countess du Barry acquired this estate to house her staff. She entrusted the construction of sumptuous stables to one of the greatest architects of her time, Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, a leading figure of Neoclassical architecture. But the death of Louis XV in 1774 changed her destiny. In 1775, Madame du Barry ceded the property to the Count of Provence, brother of the new king, Louis XVI. He continued the development works under Jean-François Chalgrin, the future architect of the Arc de Triomphe. Transformed into a military district during the Revolution, the site underwent many changes. In 1902, the stables and the pavilion were separated. While the stables became the Versailles Police Headquarters, the pavilion was acquired in 1937 by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which established its offices there while preserving the refined décor and period artworks recalling the presence of Madame du Barry. A rare and captivating visit Today, this exceptional site opens its doors only for guided tours organized by the Versailles Tourist Office. It is a unique opportunity to step into the intimacy of a woman who left her mark on her century, and to discover a remarkably preserved heritage blending history, architecture, and the French art of living. 📍 Information & Reservations For upcoming tour dates or to book your place, please contact us directly.
