From the tram bridge over the Volférine to Dragon’s bridge over the Valserine, you’re eyes will never be far from witnessing paradise, in this place that combines cliffs, gorges, rivers, works of art and landscapes. Heading down the D 14, the trail comes to the Saint-Martin washhouse in CHAMPFROMIER - HELL’S BRIDGE. Take “rue Neuve” to the right (yellow waymarking) before the bridge and head around the hotel to a metal barrier that you will need to open. The trail heads down into the gorges of the Volferine and crosses the torrent at the foot of a surprising stone structure. Continue along the left embankment and then take a good path through a meadow to your left. The path descends to the left and then enters the forest. Turn left towards Domplomb. The trail, which pleasantly rises and falls through boxwood, copses and and high forests, opens out onto the D 14 near the Domplomb tunnel. The trail turns right to descend below the road with quite a surprise along the way. You will join up with the Valserine at DRAGON’S BRIDGE. Take care, the path is right on the edge of the torrent. Cross the bridge observing where the fish pass, and then ascend to the right to reach the Dragon’s House. Follow the stony path to the right which, after a bend, comes to the bridge of Sous Roche. The path crosses over the Valserine and heads up the opposite bank via a steep trail along the edge of a cliff. During high waters, sources and waterfalls gush and splatter near the trail. Return to the village the way you came, making the most of the view over the cirque of Avalanches to the west of Champfromier, where the Volferine starts.

Follow the Menthières snowshoe trail through snow-covered forests and clearings to an alpine chalet. Once you arrive, enjoy a superb panorama of Mont Blanc, the Alps, Lake Geneva, and the Hautes-Combes du Jura. This is a round-trip route that takes you through the wild and unspoiled landscape typical of the Haute Chaîne du Jura. Follow the marked trail through the forest and then across the mountain pastures to reach the Chalet de la Poutouille, an unmanned refuge that makes for a great stopping-point in the heart of nature. Along the way, there are many viewpoints: the Grand Crêt d'Eau dominates the landscape at the start, then gradually magnificent panoramas of Mont Blanc, the Alps, the Lake Geneva basin and nearby Geneva reveal themselves. This peaceful trail, away from the crowds, immerses you in the sweeping scenery of the Jura ridges. The route passes through the Haute Chaîne du Jura National Nature Reserve, a protected area where nature rules: stay on the marked trails and follow the regulations. Please note that from December 15 to June 30, the trail crosses a wildlife quiet zone. Use of the trail is only allowed on condition that you stay strictly on the marked route and do not stray from it.

The mountain pastures of Menthières and the landscapes of the Chalet du Sac offer wide-open spaces for an escape in the heart of the Monts Jura. The trail starts from the parking lot opposite the Rendu chairlift, skirting the go ape tree park before climbing to the Col de Menthières. It passes through emblematic places that serve as landmarks for hikers: the “Grange Velue” and the “Chalet du Sac” which offer panoramic views of Valserhône, the Retord plateau and the Alps. The route takes you through the heart of the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park, and part of the Haute Chaîne du Jura National Nature Reserve: a protected, unspoilt area to be explored with respect. This peak is a must-see for its unique views of the Valserine valley, the Jura and Mont-Blanc. After a climb through the forest, a flight of steps will complete the hike for a contemplative reward! This hike, which can be enjoyed from April to November, starts from Forens. A path leads through the woods to the ruins of a house called the “Grand Mannet”. The view gradually opens up over the Valserine valley and the Haute Chaîne du Jura. The last few metres are up a steep path, followed by steps to the summit. From here, a 360° panorama of the Mont-Blanc which appears so close to the Jura mountains and the folds of the Jura massif. then to, note the “Borne au Lion”, the 17th-century border marker between Franche-Comté, Bugey and the territory of the Duchy of Savoy. Explanatory panels tell the story of the resistants who hid here during the Second World War. To round off the hike, a short detour to the lovely Étrès waterfall is a must.

From the balconies of the Valserine to the balconies of the Semine, four stunning viewpoints are the highlights of this circuit through the Giron-Champfromier forest. From the cemetery, at GIRON 1000 (), take Rue du Grand Golet towards Le Cretet (blue MTB waymarking no. 9). Head up the tarmac road towards Combe Marin, in a wooded environment.Reach La Croix via a muddy forest path that heads right.  When you reach La Croix, which offers a beautiful view over Giron, continue straight on a tarmac road up into the forest, towards Chemin Neuf.Continue straight, head past the metal barrier and continue on the forest path for 400 m. Head up to your left (cross-country ski slope) into the forest via a muddy path towards Les Cinq Chalets, you will reach a viewpoint over Le Haut-Bugey, the southern part of the Jura massif.Branch off to the left eastwards and stay on the forest path to reach a path suitable for vehicles at Pas du Boeuf. Follow the path to your left for 250 m, and then head up to your right to reach the Achat viewpoint (viewpoint over the High Jura Chain, the Crêt de Chalam and the Les Avalanches cirque). Follow this path to the right for 450 m, branch off to the right on a forest path for 700 m and then take another forest trail to your right towards Combe de l’Auger. Make a round trip to the Belvedere of Les Avalanches to your right, heading through LES AVALANCHES (open view over the valley of the Valserine).On returning to Combe sur l’Auger, take the little grassy trail to the north through a clearing before joining up with a forest path, towards the Chalet Cottin. Continue on the forest path towards Les Abrans.Take the D 48a to your left for 800 m until you reach Le Bleu. Branch off to the right on a forest path and then continue on the muddy trail along a cliff (be careful!). Head past Les Ordières to reach the junction with La Roche Fauconnière.The Belvedere of La Roche Fauconnière and its view over Les Roches d’Orvaz can be accessed in a round trip by ascending to the right.When you return, take the forest path and then the forest road to Combe Marin. Return to your departure point the way you came.

This itinerary in the Michaille is ideal for a family mountain bike outing, at the foot of the Plateau de Retord, with lovely views of the Crêt d'Eau (and even Mont-Blanc!). Wide, stony trails with no major difficulties. Take a break by the Nièvre pond or under the four-hundred-year-old Sully lime tree in the charming village of Villes. Watch out for road crossings and the occasional stretch of road.

Capped by its famous cross, erected in 1892, this summit offers breathtaking views of the Lake Geneva basin and Mont Blanc on a clear day. The descent to the alpine chalets (La Polvette and La Capitaine) leads to the Passage des Chézerands and the hamlet of Rosset. The Reculet cross, weighing 1600 kg, was carried to the summit on the backs of four Thoiry residents. A refuge set in an alpine farmhouse built in 1834 in Péron, offering an ideal getaway in the heart of nature. Located at an altitude of 1 446m in the Haute Chaîne du Jura National Nature Reserve, this picturesque refuge welcomes you in an authentic, rustic setting, ideal for mountain hikers. The refuge comprises 2 distinct sections : a refuge and a gîte. The refuge part offers comfortable and simple living conditions, with welcoming bedrooms, a cosy common room and a fully-equipped kitchen for preparing meals. Open all year round, it can accommodate up to 8 people, with 6 mattresses available for hikers. Equipped with a wood -burning stove for warming up in winter, a table for eating and a shelter in case of bad weather, the refuge allows visitors to rest and spend the night in peace. Renovated in 2022, with walls and roof insulated with burnt wood planks, it also features solar panels for room lighting and USB sockets for visitors' convenience. Wood is supplied by the association to fuel the stove. The gîte section is reserved exclusively for residents of the commune of Péron. To obtain the key, you need to reserve via the Mairie de Péron website and go to the Mairie to collect it, accessible via the “Availability and reservations” tab. Upstairs, under the roof, the gîte offers 14 beds, where you can be awakened by the gentle rays of sunshine filtering through the velux windows. On the first floor, a wood -burning stove warms the space and allows you to prepare your meals, accompanied by a gas stove and a complete assortment of utensils and pots and pans. Outside, a source of non-potable water allows you to recharge at the source. This will enable you to clean your cooking utensils. It's important to remember to bring drinking water with you. Telemechanism is a principle that rapidly declined with the emergence of electricity. The pillars are remnants of a time during which an abundance of ideas on technical improvements flourished. These cut-stone pyramid-shaped pillars provided support to one or more wheels, built into the upper part. The cables ran from the pulley, driven by the turbine (located further downstream), before running around the pillar’s wheels and reaching the grain mill wheel, which in turn activated the grinding wheel by a series of gears.

Comprised of four arches, with one measuring eighteen metres and three other smaller ones, the Tram bridge crosses the Volferine river near the new Pont d’Enfer (Hell’s bridge). On the old tram line that linked Bellegarde-sur-Valserine to Chézery-Forens, it is one of the three bridges built for the tramway’s passage after that of Bellegarde and the Pont du Moulin des Pierres, which overlooks the gorges from 65 metres high with a range of 80 metres.

The electrical equipment for the tramway line was entrusted to the company Thomson-Houston. It was the first tramway in the Ain to be completely electric as from its construction. The plant required the construction of a dam, a 900-meter supply line, a steel and concrete penstock that fed, after a 40-meter drop, its two direct-current generators. The plant is still in use; it is automatically controlled from the Génissiat dam. The first storey, with access from the side of the building, was reserved for the housing of power plant guards.

Taking care to stay on the path, through the trees, you will see a tufa waterfall. Upstream, during its underground travels, the water from this rivulet has dissolved part of the limestone. In open air, on contact with carbon dioxide (CO2), the limestone transported by the water settles on and calcifies the moss and other debris forming this curious rock with the treacherous appearance of a sponge or of volcanic rock.

The Valserine is the first French river to be labelled a “Wild River”, a label that less than 1% of French rivers are able to claim... From its source to its end in Bellegarde (46 km), its condition close to a natural state makes this river a jewel of nature. Many emblematic species are present: the yellow-bellied toad, large populations of brown trout in a good condition of preservation, all completely natural... Between this succession of high walls, Dragon’s bridge, built in 1891, only has a few metres to span to cross the river. A customs guard house was installed on the right bank to monitor the passage towards the duty-free zone in the Pays de Gex, delineated by the Valserine. On the other bank, a shop offered colonial goods and products from the duty-free zone up until 1921. The inhabitants of Champfromier tell of how their parents or grand-parents would walk to the Dragon’s farm, where duty-free coffee was sold. The game was to hide illicit products under the women’s skirts, away from customs officials. Smuggler’s tales are now part of local folklore.

The Sous-roche dam upstream from the Dragon’s bridge was installed between the two world wars on the Valserine, straddling the municipalities of Chézery-Forens and Champfromier, to use the water’s hydroelectric power. A fish pass positioned on the left embankment allows trout to cross the obstacle. However, the structure limits the circulation of sediments dragged along by the river. Under the Wild River contract, solutions are being studied to improve the transportation of sediments, which is vital for the proper operation of the river.

The landscape surrounding you is the result of 200 million years of erosion, shaped by the ice age, runoff waters, changes in temperature, wind, etc. The Pont des Pierres offers a viewpoint from which you can see the different ways in which the gorges have been eroded: glacial and fluvial deposits, fracture of the cliffside, glacial polish, tufa, etc. 

In 1927, an abandoned hydroelectric power plant project led to the excavation of a gallery in the gorges of the Valserine. As early as 1969, 17 species of bats, including 7 endangered species were listed as living in these galleries. For their protection, these galleries are now closed to the public. The natural reserve that was created as a result also protects the cliffs and other natural surface habitats recognised as remarkable areas by Europe.

From the dry grasslands of the belvedere of l’Achat, cloistered by the Champfromier forest, the landscape opens onto the cirque of les Avalanches and its high limestone cliffs. You are currently on the hunting grounds used by many birds of prey (peregrine falcon, common buzzard, etc.), which you will have no difficulty spotting with a bit of patience.
