Explore Saint-bon-tarentaise with Hôtel Les Peupliers

A trail between meadows and forest for those who appreciate tranquillity, taking you through the hamlet of Le Freney to the Olympic ski-jumps. From the Peupliers hotel, by the lake, follow the Rue de la Chapelle then cross the road and take the small one alongside the cheese dairy chalet. At the first turn, go down between the houses and follow the track until you arrive into the forest. The track first goes right then left. A few hundreds of metres further, you will reach the «4 paths crossing». Take the left path. After a rather short but steep ascent, you will discover Le Freney hamlet. Follow the road on the left and, at the first turn, follow straight on alongside the forest. You will then reach the road leading to the Olympic ski-jumps and Courchevel Le Praz.

This path winds through the forest and leads you to a first wide clearing, then to a second and three large basins of water forming a cascade. From the lake, set off in the direction of Le Praz, turn right and walk along the lake. Go straight up towards the house with the red shutter. Take care crossing the ski piste and continue up the path opposite. Climb up the Eclipse piste, keeping to the left hand edge and take the first path which goes back into the forest. After 200m, you arrive in the Mateigena clearing. Carry straight on along a flat road that leads down to the pools. Return by the same route.

A trip into the forest on a groomed trail wide enough for several people to climb and chat! During the day, take the cross-country ski trail then the Brigues slope. When the ski area is closed, there is an alternative route via the Boulevard des Amoureux. The "Millet" is quite a challenging itinerary reserved for ski touring, in a sublime setting. You’ll soon be captivated by the stillness and beauty of the surrounding forest. In 2012, Courchevel was the first resort to create a permanent, groomed, safe and signposted ski touring itinerary: the Millet is fast becoming legendary! Milestones every 100 m mark the route to the finish. Itinerary permitted until 7.15 pm, return to Courchevel Le Praz by gondola after the ski area closes.

This shortish and rather steep path winds through the forest, taking you to a pretty clearing and some ponds. Lac du Praz By shuttle bus, get off at the “Courchevel-Le Praz” stop. By car, park in any parking space you see either heading towards La Tania or towards Courchevel 1850. The lake is located between the Olympic ski jumps and Le Praz village.

Hidden heritage trail through the village of Le Praz. Saint-Bon and Le Praz were the two biggest villages before the Courchevel resort was founded in 1946. Most of the local population still lives here to this day. Saint-Bon, at an altitude of 1100m, is the capital of the area where you’ll find a town hall and parish church. The first hotel, Le Lac Bleu, opened here in 1908. Le Praz, at an altitude of 1300m, was the highest constantly inhabited village until Courchevel’s foundation with which it is linked by ski lifts and pistes. Both villages still have the traditional charm of the mountain setting. The sole village built on a berm was where some of the most extensive farm work in the area occurred. Nowadays most of its appeal comes from the existence of a natural lake and beautiful spruce forest. Soak up the age-old village atmosphere as you hunt for the site of the old bread oven on the square which is also home to the chapel devoted to Sainte Marie-Madeleine (15th century and extended in 1697). Don’t forget to stroll along Rue des Beauforts where you’ll find some traditional houses and a former Beaufort maturing cellar.

Explore the hamlets of Saint-Bon, where time seems to stand still. Ask for a copy of the heritage guide at any tourist office : it tells you all about them. Shuttlebus available for return journey. Rue des Sachets, Saint Bon Le Bas By shuttle bus, get off at the “Saint Bon le Bas” stop. Take “Rue des Sachets” which goes downhill on the right behind the bus stop. By car, park in the Rue des Sachets car park (just down from the start of the trail). The trail starts on the left, level with the point where it intersects Rue des Reisses.

Take the gondola lift up to the top and read up about the area on the signs along the way: snow, avalanches, ants, spruce trees, Alpine meadows, countryside, fauna, flora and the built environment. "Top of the La Tania gondola lift By shuttle bus, get off at the “La Tania” stop. By car, drive to La Tania from Le Praz and either park in the Sah car park at the resort entrance or in Le Formier car park further down the road. Walk to the resort centre and La Tania gondola lift."

Join the mythical Col de la Loze on cross-country skis! At the intersection between the Courchevel and Méribel ski areas, the Col de la Loze is a must-see in the 3 Vallées. You can extend your outing as far as the orientation table by turning right after the arrival station of the Dou des Lanches chairlift. At the start, go up the "Déviation 1550" piste, to the right of the Tovets chairlift station, to join the Plum KV itinerary by turning left after crossing the Brigues ski run.

This mountainside trail connects the villages of Courchevel La Tania and Courchevel Le Praz, with pretty views of the valley and the hamlets on the opposite slope. Beware of hard, slippery snow depending on conditions. Take the path that goes downhill, behind the totem pole. This trail leads to the Tal barns. Cross the road and, a few meters further, go up the path on the right. When you get back to the road, cross over to the safe path for pedestrians and carry on towards Le Praz, pass by the olympic ski-jumps and the Alpinium. Take a stroll around the lake. Head back via the same itinerary or with the free shuttles.

Located in the village center, the gondola brings you up to 2000 m altitude. From the top of the gondola, behold an exceptional view on the Vanoise glaciers, the Grand Bec, the Grande Casse and peaks over 3000 meters. In the summer: starting point of many walks, mountain bike routes. At the top, you can easily reach the take-off paragliding site (20 minutes' walk). Careful: in the presence of herds, dogs are not allowed on trails. In the winter: starting point of ski slopes - Champagny area, La Plagne area that includes Champagny, and Paradiski® area.

This 15th century chapel was extended in 1670 and is built on the village square which was once home to a bread oven. As the only village built on a berm, Le Praz was home to the most farms in the area. Now, its appeal mainly lies in the presence of a natural lake and beautiful spruce forest. Don’t forget to take a detour along Rue des Beauforts which is still home to some traditional houses and a former Beaufort cheese maturing cellar.

Soak up the traditional village atmosphere as you explore the old bread oven’s site on the square which was once home to the chapel devoted to Sainte Marie-Madeleine (15th century and extended in 1697). Don’t forget to go on a quick detour via Rue des Beauforts where you’ll see traditional homes and the relics of a former Beaufort maturing cellar.

The village chapel is devoted to Sainte-Marie-Madeleine. It is sometimes open during the day (summer and winter). Inside you can see statues of local saints and an altar made of leather from Córdoba.

A mountain chapel on a panoramic plateau, in the heart of the village, awaits you: come and find out about the history of the famous "Madelon" festival and the expertise of artists from the Baroque period who created the small tabernacle and colourful statues! Le Praz is a very old village in the Courchevel region, standing in the middle of a plateau, which is somewhat unusual in the mountains: very often, flat areas were reserved for growing crops and the villages were set apart from the farmland, on the slopes. Here, however, this vast plateau has room enough for both! In times past, the village was best known for "la Madelon," a festival held in July to honour its protectress - Mary Magdalene - and it's still the case today! The chapel, which stands in the heart of the village, is very large, demonstrating the sizeable population that once lived in this thoroughfare - a location that, in the past, helped generate financial donations. Near the chancel is an altar table used for religious celebrations and masses, in particular. Its altar front or "antependium" is unusually decorated in so-called "Cordoba" leather, one of the many goods that was transported, by mule, through the Alpine mountain passes!

Le Praz is situated at the highest point of your route, at the first level of ski resorts in Courchevel Valley. A pretty little village, typical of the Savoie region and steeped in history, it is the only village to be built on a projecting ledge and used to be one of the most active farming sites of the whole municipality. A gondola connects it to the slopes of the 3 Vallées ski area. It has retained an authentic, charming atmosphere with picturesque chalets, Sainte-Marie-Madeleine Chapel, narrow lanes and surrounding spruce forest. Rue des Beauforts is a street where a few traditional houses can still be spied as well as an old cheese dairy going by the same name. What's distinctive about the village are the Olympic ski jumps around it, which were used during the 1992 Winter Olympics. There are four in total, 25m, 60m, 90m and 120m, which makes it the best equipped ski jumping facility in France. The 120m jump is even unique in France. Major competitions are still hosted here, not least the Ski Jumping World Cup, and it is also a training centre for French and international teams. There is a permanent exhibition on display for learning more about the history of the site and this sport. You can even go up to the top of the Olympic jumps by climbing the steps. And why not treat yourself to a relaxing few hours around the laid-out banks of Le Praz natural lake, which is ideal for walks or fishing!

THE OLYMPIC SKI JUMPING VENUE Le Praz Plateau was chosen to host the ski jump and Nordic combined competitions at the 1992 Albertville Olympic Games. Two ski jumps were built for the occasion: one measuring 120m and the other 90m. Previously there had been a 40m ski jump on this site used for the Grand Prix in the interwar period. The site has now been developed and has two additional 60m and 25m ski jumps and a gym called L’Envolée. -> The annual Ski Jumping World Cup in mid-August.

This is the only hamlet across the North side to have a rectangular central square. It was most likely created following the demolition of several houses and barn-stables. There is still a bachal (water basin) in this square, which gave villagers and their animals direct access to water. The hamlet also has a bread oven dating back to 1908 and is home to Notre-Dame de la Visitation Chapel. Built between 1857 and 1860 at the top of the village, it was knocked down then rebuilt at the bottom of the hamlet in 1987. Moving it meant that the road leading up to Courchevel could be widened.

Mountain refuge on the shores of the Merlet lakes, in Vanoise National Park, surrounded by exceptional scenery that is characteristic of the mountains. Quiet, small mountain refuge. The refuge is staffed in the summer and open to access freely in the winter (wood and gas provided) Staffed in the summer from the end of June to the beginning of September. Weekend bookings are possible in September and October. Open to access freely in the winter, with a fee of €10 that should be left behind.

The Merlet Lake shelter is the smallest mountain hut in the Vanoise National Park. It belongs to the Town Hall, is open daily in July and August and managed by a member of the general public. It is open the rest of the year but unstaffed. Blankets alone are provided. The mountain hut is in the heart of the National Park in Avals Valley at an altitude of 2,417m. It has a terrace, common room with refectory, dormitory with 14 bunk beds and a 4-bed attic room over the common room. It has composting toilets and two outdoor water fountains which are free to the general public and guests alike (no shower). The hut can only be reached on foot. It has bivouac authorisation from Vanoise National Park subject to the number of beds in the hut. The Refuge des lacs Merlets is located in the heart of the Vanoise National Park at 2,417 m in altitude. It is a Chaloin type refuge, rustic and warm and made from wood. Built in the 1970s, it can accommodate 14 people per night.
