A former Gallic or Roman camp (castra), and then probably the site of a feudal castle; the origins of the town are still much debated. By the 11th century the Lord of La Châtre is finally identified: Ebbes VI, youngest son of Raoul de Déols, Lord of Châteauroux. Cistercian monks settle along the river Indre and initiate economic development with the construction of mills. 13th to 15th century: the town becomes the property of the Chauvigny family who, in c.1424, have a seignorial castle built within the stout walls of the town. Only the keep remains today. The Charter of 1463 gives more freedom to the burghers. In the 15th century, at the end of the Hundred Years War, the town develops significantly. Situated between the estates of the King of France and former English provinces, it becomes a centre trade, facilitated by the presence of the court at Bourges. Beautiful mansions are built. Early 18th century: at the boundary of low and hugh salt tax zones, La Châtre becomes a garrison town and magistrates build private residences. 1788: the Council decides to tear down the remaining gates of the town, whose walls were already three quarters demolished. 19th century: prominent leather industry. Located in a cattle-breeding region watered by the river Indre, the town, by the Middle Ages, already possessed numerous tanneries, and a district is still so named today. Marked by the presence of George Sand the novelist, who used to come to La Châtre to meet her friends, even if she confessed to deploring the conformance of the town. In the sixties, La Châtre is transformed, as complete suburbs are established around the od town. Today, La Châtre is a dynamic sous-préfecture with more than 4700 inhabitants.

Starting from the beautiful pond of Lurcy-Lévis, near the center of the village and the Anduise river, take the nice pretty roads crossing the village called once ""Lurcy-la-Sauvage"" due to its many forests. Starting from Lurcy-Lévis, cross the village and take time to admire its roman 12th century stone church. Ride along pretty little roads, near the aerodrome and the large racing circuit unique in Europe thanks to its 1500 m straight line then take the shaded path to the great stone and brick castle "" Château de Béguin"". Take the direction of Street Art City, famous unique world place known for Street Art and its large number of artists.

This loop invits you on the land of the lord of Saint Augustin, to the walk along the small pretty roads, big forests and ponds. This 19,2 km long ride is recommended for children over the age of ten, occasional cyclists and cycling enthusiasts. Starting from Neure, take the small road crossing the Taillis de Brimerand and join Château-sur-Allier, the village connected to Allier the last great wild european river. Indeed, the birth of the village is due thanks sailors. The port as well was very active. Ride along the small pretty roads to the entrance of ""Château de Saint Augustin"" where the monastic community lived centuries ago. This magnificent 15th century castle is located in a huge wood whose oaks were used to build the boats. Cross this pretty green setting to go back Neure.

Starting from Château-sur-Allier, follow the nice small road to the Chavannée typical house in Bourbonnais . Overlooking the Allier river, last wild european river, this typical house of the bocage bourbonnais is the same as before and still represents the witness of past life in the village, always connected with the river. Indeed, the birth of the village is due thanks sailors. The port as well was very active thanks to the confluence between rivers Allier and Bieudre. Take the time to admire the landscape in the area then follow the road to the castle ""Château de Saint Augustin"", surrounded by its green setting.

This loop invits you to discover the beautiful castles in Le Veurdre, village near the Allier river, the last great wild european river. This 7,16 km long ride is recommended for children over the age of ten, occasional cyclists and cycling enthusiasts. Starting from Le Veurdre, where the village was known for its navigation activities on the Allier river. Take the small pretty road to ""Château de la Baume"". This nice 18 th century stone castle belonged to the same family for three hundred centuries, before its purchase by a king's adviser who gave it its current size. Follow your way to the beautiful ""Château de la Charnée"" built by the Crown prosecutor in 18th century and then take time to admire the setting. Ride at your own pace along the little woods and pond of Nouets before going back Le Veurdre.

An orphan shepherdess who became a seamstress before reaching literary glory (Marie-Claire, Prix ​​Fémina 1910): Marguerite Audoux (1863-1937) had an astonishing destiny, that her museum traces over 240 square meters, with a completely new scenography.

Sainte-Montaine, healer of all ailments and abbess in the region, gave her name to the village and its church. The legend speaks of a beautiful miraculous fountain on the edge of the village which would make all child-seeking couples fertile. The church is closed to the public.

A legend says that one day a young maid came back from the fountain and did not see the brambles at her feet, stumbled and broke her pitcher. Yet it was necessary to return to the house where reigned a bad boss. Angry, this one reproached the servant for her clumsiness and, to mock her, sent her back to fetch water with a wicker basket. The girl obeyed, her tears fell into the fountain... But in all confidence, imploring the Saint, she plunged into water her wicker basket, and MIRACLE ! The basket retained water like the most waterproof bucket and on the path, the brambles were gone forever... You won't find a single one today. So the water from the fountain is said to be miraculous ! Montaine has since become the patron saint of Sologne.

The Maison Victorine offers a journey through time to discover Aubigny. Annuals exhibitions present souvenirs and objects collected by the population. Open from April to September.

This church is attested from the IXth century, it is dedicated to Saint-Martin (bishop of Tours in the IVth century). During the Hundred Years War, the church was burnt down by the English twice (in 1356 then in 1412). The side chapels and the choir were built by Robert Stuart, following the fire of 1512. A keystone bears his coat of arms and could be dated to the years 1517-1527.

One of the most beautiful and one of the oldest house of Aubigny-sur-Nère, built in 1519 after a big fire (1512). Nowedays, it welcomes the art gallery François 1er where you will appreciate multiple exhibitions.

Béraud and Robert Stuart, formerly Lords of Aubigny, contemporaries of Leonardo da Vinci, built the Aubigny castle in the XVIth century. The bridge takes its distorted name from the Escabignat family, rich burghers who made a donation towards the development of the bridge. On either side, wooden houses can be seen, former tanneries with drying areas extending over the river Indre. The proximity of water made it possible to soak the hides which, after numerous stages, were put in attics to dry. The ise of the leather indsutry in the region developed significantly, and in 1811, there were 18 tanneries in La Châtre, the greatest concentration of this trade in the region. They closed, along with numerous mills along the river, one after another at the end of the 19th century.

The new Chef, Anita Moir, Kiwi* born, now splits her time between catering in London and France London and France is very comfortable, she assures us, with creating vegan dishes, but is equally is just as happy preparing a casserole with meat, or a cake with eggs.
