Dive into the history of the Macaroon of Montmorillon and discover the fabulous transformation of the almond into this delicious little cake whose recipe is still kept secret and has been passed on for five generations within the Rannou-Métivier House. Discover this famous specialty that has made the reputation of Montmorillon since the 17th century! During your visit of about 1h30, you will learn everything about the almond tree and the particularities of this tree with its twisted trunk. You will explore the characteristics of this singular fruit that is the almond. Finally, you will follow the epic of this macaroon in its tour of France through the centuries and will try to discover its manufacturing secrets well kept by the Rannou-Métivier family!

A first church was built in the 12th century and was located in the heart of a suburb of the town of Montmorillon. In the 19th century, judged too small and in bad condition, the building was rebuilt except for the old choir and the bell tower dating from the Romanesque period. These elements are still visible in the eastern part. The new building is in the neo-Gothic style and has a very homogeneous furniture from the same period: pulpit, organ, stained glass windows. The latter, in particular, form an ensemble of great quality testifying to the religious tastes of the time and to the economic and social life of the town of Montmorillon. Registered as a Historic Monument in 1984.

The 2013 purchase of the Seneschalerie, the Old Palace and the vast garden allowed for the renovation of these spaces and the opening of the garden to the public. The Garden of the Sénéchaussée, which is ideally located, in the heart of the city center, near the Cité de l'Écrit and the Office de Tourisme, is a garden that extends over a remarkable area of 5000m². Protected as a Historic Monument, this garden is located along the Gartempe river. Initially considered as a French garden, it was also a food garden, old photos showing the presence of flowers and fruit trees. During its redevelopment, the owner wished to respect the initial layout by bringing some modernizations, the boxwood alleys were for example replaced by flowery borders, by rose gardens, but also by alleys covered with arbors and pergolas.

First municipal museum of the South-Vienne when it was created in 1936, the Museum of Art and History of Montmorillon (MAHM) has been enriched over the years with works of Poitiers artists, most of them former students of the Poitiers School of Fine Arts. Its designation as a Museum of France testifies to the recognition by the Ministry of Culture of the quality of the MAHM's collections, of a rich and varied cultural offer and of a comfort of visit adapted to the greatest number. During a free or guided visit, admire landscapes, portraits, rural and religious genre scenes, medals, sculptures, photographs, but also a diversity of collections which testify to the life of Montmorillonne and constitute the richness of our territory.

This building, built in the 12th century in the cemetery of the Maison-Dieu, had a double function in the Middle Ages. In its upper part, it housed a chapel linked to the cult of the dead, and in its lower part, the space sheltered the cemetery's ossuary. The bones of the Christians, taken regularly from the cemetery, were stored there awaiting the promised resurrection. The modillion cornice and the western portal have beautiful sculpted elements from the 12th century. It is the most original monument in the Montmorillonnais area. It was classified as a Historic Monument in 1840. A heritage desk installed at the entrance will give you information on this monument. Site inaccessible to the visit.

A first hospital was founded on this site at the end of the 11th century. The site quickly fell into ruin and was taken over by a pilgrim lord, Robert du Peux, at the beginning of the 12th century, who set up a monastery hospital there. From this period, two main buildings have survived the centuries: the Saint-Laurent church and the chapel of the cemetery, the famous Octagon. During the Hundred Years' War, the complex was fortified, as can still be seen in the defense tower located south of the church. The large monastic buildings, the boiler room and the barn were rebuilt in the 17th century. In 1805, the complex was bought by the Bishopric of Poitiers and became the seat of a minor seminary which closed in 1968. The site is not accessible to visitors.

Built on a rocky promontory at the end of the 11th century, the Romanesque church was rebuilt in the Gothic period and fortified during the Hundred Years War. The jewel in the crown of this building is the crypt of Saint Catherine. The mural paintings dated from the 1200s represent some episodes of the legendary life of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Of very high quality, these paintings testify to the importance of this church and illustrate the transition period between Romanesque and Gothic art. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1862. The site is not accessible to visitors.

The whole of the crypt of Saint Catherine, built at the end of the 11th century, had a painted decoration. In the eastern part of the nave, a lamb with the strange silhouette of a horse and the head of an old man from the Apocalypse remain. The decoration of the apse, in a vast mandorla, presents a Virgin and Child surrounded by six saints. The Child Jesus places a crown on the head of St. Catherine, patron saint of the crypt. Below, two scenes from the life of the saint are represented. This ensemble, with its rich and varied range of colors, belongs to the style of the transition between the Romanesque and the Gothic. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1862. Site inaccessible to the visit.
