This path will make you discover the limestone hills around Loudun. Privileged witnesses of the geological and historical evolution of our regions, they tell the formidable story of the Neolithic men who were sanctuaries there, relayed later by the Celts and the Gallo-Romans.

The Chemin d'Aliénor is a 90 km cycling route. It links the Loire à Vélo to the Scandiberique via the Ligne Verte, an old railroad line between Châtellerault and Loudun.

The trail runs through the entire Briande valley with views of windmills, the Loudun landscape, and troglodyte complexes dug into the tufa rock that for centuries were home to modest families.

With this tour, take a step back in time to the time of our ancestors: the Neolithic men. You will not only notice their traces with numerous dolmens and covered walkways but you will also understand why they settled in Loudunais and especially around Arçay and Saint-Laon. Admire also the remarkable views on the surrounding hillsides.

This circuit will make you see several dolmens, a "mound" where large slabs were collected by our ancestors of the Neolithic, a hike that alternates between fields and undergrowth that crosses pretty villages.

Former railway line linking Châtellerault and Loudun, this green line is a fabulous way to discover the heritage and the land of Poitou, thanks to the educational and entertaining terminals scattered along the route for the greatest pleasure of all! The green line is 37 km long and includes 18 km of Loudunaise section. It is also possible to follow it on foot or on horseback.

This trail through the cultivated countryside offers beautiful views of traditional homes built of "left" stone. Walk through a land of rehabilitated springs and discover the cradle of Acadia and our American cousins.

This itinerary passes by the "Reine Blanche" bridge, named in homage to the passage of Queen Blanche of Castille in the 12th century. Cross the narrow streets dug in the tufa stone, the vineyards, discover the troglodyte dwellings, castles and chapels and finally come to admire the unique canal of the Dive in Poitou.

The Porte du Martray is the only remaining gate of the four that formed the fortified enclosure of Loudun designed by Philippe Auguste (14th century), destroyed by the will of Richelieu between 1623 and 1634 Formerly equipped with a drawbridge with arrow, it is an interesting illustration of the art of fortification in the Middle Ages. Since its construction, it has undergone numerous modifications. Its top floor was probably destroyed during the earthquake of 1711 Recently restored and illuminated at nightfall, it has now regained a certain brilliance.

Fortified during the 15th and 16th centuries, this former church of the Carmelite convent is a remarkable testimony of the end of the Gothic period in Poitou (south portal). The single nave ends with a flat chevet pierced by a large bay with flamboyant filling. The 19th century stained glass window represents the resurrection after the painting by Raphael. The restoration of the monument has brought out the sculpted decoration as finely as lace. To be seen inside: the painting (painted panel) "Virgin and Child, known as Our Lady of Recouvrance" after restoration.

The Musée Charbonneau-Lassay houses rich and varied collections, largely bequeathed by the scholar Louis Charbonneau-Lassay (1871-1946): archaeological objects from the region and beyond, old books, swords and firearms. Today, his collection coexists with 19th-century paintings, emblematic pieces of folk art from the Loudun region, and an astonishing collection of African art, including imposing ritual masks. Housed in a former 18th-century mansion in the town's oldest quarter, the museum stands alongside listed historic monuments such as the Porte du Martray and the remarkable Gothic church of St-Hilaire.

Today, it is the only remaining element of the fortress that was dismantled under Louis XIII to suppress a Protestant stronghold. A superb Romanesque building built in the 11th century, the Sainte-Croix collegiate church was the site of exorcism sessions during the trial of Urbain Grandier in 1634. This priest accused of witchcraft by nuns was the main protagonist of the "affair of the possessed of Loudun". At the end of the 19th century, the church was transformed into a covered market until 1991. Today, it is one of the major monuments of Loudun's heritage with its exceptional painted decorations from the 12th and late 13th centuries.
