The Porte du Martray is the only remaining gate of the four that formed the fortified enclosure of Loudun designed by Philippe Auguste (14th century), destroyed by the will of Richelieu between 1623 and 1634
Formerly equipped with a drawbridge with arrow, it is an interesting illustration of the art of fortification in the Middle Ages. Since its construction, it has undergone numerous modifications. Its top floor was probably destroyed during the earthquake of 1711
Recently restored and illuminated at nightfall, it has now regained a certain brilliance.
