Come and ride in the heart of the Massif des Maures, between the oak and chestnut forests, to admire the breathtaking landscapes of the Var. COMMUNITIES CROSSED: Pierrefeu-du-Var, Puget-Ville, Collobrières, La Londe-les-Maures START OF THE ROUTE The hike starts from the car park behind the archery park. SIGNAGE: ORANGE To get to the car park, take the D14 towards Collobrières. Turn right coming from Pierrefeu, direction Tir à l'Arc. The car park is located just behind the archery. Start by taking the small winding path on the right of the car park to join the RD and head for the hamlet of La Portanière. After crossing the RD 14, take the Chemin de Maraval for 1.4 km, then follow the arrow post n°49B, direction Collobrières Village. Your journey begins with the discovery of small typically Provençal hamlets, before leading you to the Peyriers track and its oak forest. At the arrow post n°51B, follow Collobrières Village. After passing in front of the Plaine Longue reservoir, get your calves ready because it starts to climb for about 4 km. You then arrive at the Baudisson hunters' hut where you can take a well-deserved break. Follow the arrow post n°55 "Cabane Baudisson" towards Collobrières Village. Downhill enthusiasts will appreciate the next 5 km which will provide them with great sensations, on a partly stony track, with a ford crossing, to arrive at the entrance of Collobrières village. Don't forget to taste the famous marrons glacés and other chestnut-based delicacies! After your gourmet break, retrace your steps towards the firemen's car park and follow the arrow post n°40C "La Capelle", towards Pierrefeu la Portanière, by "le grand Gageai". After the second arrow post, always follow Pierrefeu la Portanière by "le grand Gageai". Then go up the Rieille track for 5.5 km passing by the lake of Camp Bourjas, rich in various species of fish such as perch, roach, pike-perch... Come on, courage! At the arrow post n°39 "Valcros d'Aumeran", direction Baisse du Castellas, there are only 12 km left before the return journey. Enjoy riding on this great track with a breathtaking view of the coastline and the forest of the Massif des Maures. The last kilometre will be the opportunity to accelerate and to jump a few small bumps on the edge of the Issemble track, at about 650 m from the arrow post n°47 "Issemble Beaussenas", direction Pierrefeu la Portanière

A walking and cycling trail in the heart of the Massif des Maures to discover the largest dolmen in the Var. Enjoy panoramic views of the Massif des Maures and Notre Dame des Anges from the hills, and the Golden Isles and Giens peninsula from the sea. This route begins in the Pansard valley, an ideal starting point for exploring the natural and historical riches of the Maures massif. As soon as you start to climb, you'll be immersed in typical Mediterranean vegetation, with arbutus, heather, rockrose and cork oak, typical of the maquis. The trail leads you to the Gaoutabry dolmen, the largest megalith in the Var and an impressive reminder of prehistoric times. This listed site is surrounded by an enclosure, which you can cross to get a close-up view of the remains of this funerary structure. This walk will also take you through the vineyards and allow you to admire the pretty views of the sea, La Londe les Maures, the Salins d'Hyères and the Golden Islands. Did you know? The dolmen is a collective tomb dating back to the Neolithic period and is listed as a Historic Monument. The presence of this edifice suggests the past existence of a community with strong beliefs in the cult of the dead. PRACTICAL INFORMATION: - Depart from the Notre Dame des Maures piste car park on the Collobrières road (D88). COURSE: Take the DFCI trail - Notre Dame Des Maures / Dolmen de Gaoutabry which rises slowly through the vineyards. Ignore the track on the right. Then follow the direction of the Dolmen, track on the right. Continue to the top of the hill to reach an open area on the prehistoric site. Take the 1st path on the left, perpendicular to the finishing track at the LMS 12 cistern. Take a small path up the slope leading to the prehistoric site. Descend along the same path and continue on the same track which leads to a wider track, turn left. Reach an open area where several tracks end, continue slightly left on the wider track. Continue downhill. Note an intersection with a track on the right; continue downhill towards the plain on the widened track. After passing through vineyards and alongside an olive grove, turn left to reach the end of the track. Turn right and drive through the village of Notre Dame Des Maures on a tarmac road. Leave the road at the end of the village and turn left onto a track that runs alongside a fence and reaches the first vineyard. Continue until you reach the start trail, which you take on the right and return to the starting point. TIME: - On foot: 2h35 - By bike: 45 min PRATICAL INFORMATION: - Start from the Notre Dame des Maures trail car park on the road to Collobrières (D88). ADVICE AND RECOMMENDATIONS: - Take sun cream and water with you. - Always keep up to date with the weather conditions. - During the hunting season, stay on the marked trails. - In an emergency, call 112 for help. - It is forbidden to drive or park any motorised vehicle on DFCI roads all year round. From June to September, before driving in the Var mountain ranges, check the opening conditions on the fire risk map (updated at 5pm every day for the following day) or by calling the tourist office.

After the Armistice of June 1940, defeated, France collaborates with the Third Reich. Following the Allied landing in North Africa and the scuttling of the French fleet in the port of Toulon, in November 1942, General de GAULLE in 1943 tasked General GIRAUD, to reorganize in North Africa, a French army with American material support. The Allies imagine to fight the occupation troops by the North (Operation OVERLORD in Normandy) and the South (Operation DRAGOON in Provence). The coast of the Moors (la côte des Maures) appears then as the only place likely to escape the coastal batteries of the Toulon area. Two months after the landing of Normandy on the 6th of June of 1944, the Allies get the green light. On the night of August 14 to 15 in 1944, the African commandos, the first French soldiers on the soil of Provence, stormed Cape Negro, the naval assault group, the Esquirol point, the Canadians and American rangers the Golden Islands. American parachutists are dropped in the plain of Muy. On the morning of August 15th, American divisions land at Cavalaire; for eight days, those of the Army of Africa land in a continuous flow on the beaches of Cavalaire, Dramont, Nartelle to liberate the occupied towns and villages in Var. A walk between the village and the seaside along many vineyards. It can be used by all (mountain bikes, gravel bikes, VTC) and combines the Annamites promenade with the Garenne promenade. This easy walk will allow you to discover all the landscapes of La Londe: village, vineyards, hills, beaches and port. Ready? Then saddle up! Your walk starts in the town centre from Avenue Clémenceau, head west to pick up the coastal cycle route over 1 km. Arrive at the Garenne roundabout, cross the road to take the promenade of the same name. Head south towards the sea! You will then walk along the vineyards in the shade of the holm and cork oaks. You can then admire the view of the Vieux Salins d'Hyères and its pink flamingos. Pass along the campsites towards the Bastidon pine forest. There you are, the sea is there! Head east, towards the port and Miramar beach. A small diversions behind the Capitainerie (harbour office) allows you to cross to the other side of the Maravenne rainwater channel. Walk along the quay then follow the seafront to the Argentière pine forest. It's time to head back towards your starting point, via the Annamites promenade, which is particularly shaded under the pines! Hamlet located 3km from the town centre. Founded around 758 by the people of Cuers to escape the Saracens. You can see the Saint Louis chapel, the bread oven, 2 fountains and the symbolic "Tree of Liberty" planted in 1848. Founded by the inhabitants of Cuers in the middle of the 7th century (around the year 758) who fled from the Saracens and took refuge in the woods. The chapel dedicated to Saint Louis was built in 1723 and completed in 1724 thanks to the generosity of the Valcrosians, as this place of worship meant that they did not have to go to the village. Two washbasins adorn the hamlet. The symbolic hackberry tree "Tree of Liberty" was planted in the hamlet square in 1848 by Paulin Teisseire and Désiré Ruy.

On the way to a 10km walk from the cemetery, there are some surprising niches in a well-preserved dry stone wall. Surrounding the ruins and terraces are some surprising niches built into a well-preserved dry stone wall. This 18th-century "apié" could contain 25 hives made of wood or cork bark. These stone edifices protected the bees from temperature variations, bad weather and predators. Like most apiès, it faces south so that the hives are protected from the Mistral wind and exposed to light for longer. This architectural heritage bears witness to skills that have been skilfully studied and perfected over time. A Provençal farmer's manual published in Toulon by Henri Laure in 1837 contains advice for beekeepers of yesteryear. He recommended placing these buildings in an orchard or on the edge of a wood, near which he advised planting rosemary for better taste results. Olive trees, on the other hand, seemed to repel bees, while arbutus and heather gave a bitter taste that was not appreciated.

Built around the middle of the 16th century on top of a hill overlooking the villages of Cuers and Solliès-Pont. It has a remarkable entrance portal in blond stone, very elaborate and decorated with moulded shells in stucco. It is separated by the width of a bend (about 60 to 80cm) from another chapel, also dedicated to Saint Christine but situated in the commune of Solliès-Pont! The tarmac path leading to these two chapels is lined with oratories. The main altar is dated 1817 (at the bottom of the tomb); it has been restored by the association "Les amis de Ste Christine".

It is a large composition of 5 m high, with various symbols referring to the prosperity and folklore of the region. Two horns of plenty overflowing with fleshy fruits and blooming flowers, frame the communal coat of arms. The central relief is a Victory crowned with olive tree, offering the crown and the palm. The coronation is a trophy, taking up the armor and the crest helmet of the Roman soldiers. These representations are not without evoking the Roman origin of the village. Three shells and two Howitzers surround the majestic building. The Cannes architect Charles SEASAL realized this monument inaugurated on November 1st, 1916. It will be enriched in 1919. Then, plates will be added in order to pay homage to the "Dead for the Fatherland" of the two world wars and that making the places of the combats where the valiant Cuersois perished.  

In 1964, the association RHIN & DANUBE, at the national level and in agreement with the government, suggested to affix a marble plate in all the cities and cities crossed by the armies of the Liberation, which would thus remind the future generations, the date of the Liberation of each. The plate of Cuers inaugurated on August 17, 1964 carries the following engraving: «THE FIRST FRENCH ARMY COMMANDED BY THE GENERAL OF LATTER OF TASSIGNY, FORGED IN AFRICA AND ITALY, DEBARQUEE IN PROVENCE, GROSSIE OF THE FRENCH FORCES OF THE INTERIOR, TO LEAVE CUERS, ON AUGUST 17, 1944, IN HIS VICTORIOUS MARKET IN RHINE AND DANUBE »

This stele has been inaugurated on September 14, 1941 by General LAURE, General Secretary of the Head of State, passing through CUERS, to preside at various patriotic ceremonies, with handing of a pennant to the Legion section. It is located district bridge of Pignans, place where was felled the plane of the chief warrant officer André HOURCADE June 15, 1940. It is a marble stele on which is fixed a metal palm. At the top of the stele, wings, symbolizing aviation, are carved and form a body with the cross.

This stele reminds us that at this place, the "TURCOS" regiments of Algerian Sharshooters, have made a halt, having landed in Provence on the beaches of Dramont as they were led by Colonel de LINARES himself under the General de LATTRE DE TASSIGNY orders. Then, they went through Montrieux, the plateau de Signes and Revest in order to deliver Toulon. The first army, which was commanded by General de LATTRE DE TASSIGNY, landed in Provence to liberate the territories that were occupied by the Germans right before going back to Berlin to sign the German surrender. In this first army, which was called "The French Expeditionary Force", there were regiments composed mainly of fighters of North African origin (between 230,000 and 250,000 men). Some regiments were composed of Moroccans, who were called "Tabors" or "Goums". Some others, who were called "TURCOS", had Algerian origins and were part of the 3rd AID (Algerian infantry division). The Algerian and Tunisian sharpshooters’ regiments were with the Zouaves among the most decorated of the French army. But why were they called « TURCOS »? This nickname was given to Algerian riflemen by Russian troops during the Crimean War (1853-1856). Indeed, they fought so heroically that the Russians fled before them shouting "Turcos" because the Turks had the reputation of being formidable warriors.

La Bouchonnerie: a testament to local craftsmanship in Pierrefeu! In the 19th century, the cork and cork stopper manufacturing industry experienced a real boom in the Var. In Pierrefeu-du-Var, several cork stopper factories were established at the start of the century and reached their peak around 1860, making this activity a major sector of the local economy. The largest of these factories, situated in the Barri district, was relocated at the start of the 20th century to what is now Avenue des Poilus. The business expanded considerably there: nearly a hundred employees worked there, producing between 60 and 80 million bottle stoppers each year. But the history of cork production is also marked by tragic events. In 1950, a violent fire ravaged the buildings and industrial facilities, destroying nearly three-quarters of the site as well as the entire stock of cork, estimated at 4 million tonnes. On top of these difficulties, foreign competition gradually began to mount. From the end of the 19th century, production in the Iberian Peninsula expanded and, in the 1940s and 1950s, French cork factories faced increasingly fierce international competition. The cork factory in Pierrefeu-du-Var finally ceased operations in 1971, bringing to an end more than a century of local industrial history. Today, the former cork factory stands as a testament to the importance of the cork industry in the economic and social history of Pierrefeu-du-Var. Now a venue dedicated to culture, it regularly hosts exhibitions and cultural events at the Espace Bouchonnerie – Salle André Malraux. At the entrance to the Espace Bouchonnerie is also the Maison des Arts et Traditions Provençales, home to the Leï Roucas dou Barri association. This association keeps alive the tradition of Marseillais piqué, more commonly known as boutis, a traditional Provençal textile craft. Throughout the year, the association helps to keep this artisanal heritage alive and introduce people to it. In particular, it organises the annual Rencontres du Boutis, an event that brings together enthusiasts, creators and visitors to celebrate this traditional art form, at the heart of the Espace Bouchonnerie.

Square du Plessis de Grenadan: On August 16, 2018, a new stele was inaugurated, in memory of 3 American pilots who fell during an aerial combat on January 27, 1944 on the heights of Pierrefeu du Var, whose remains were discovered by a Pierrefeu inhabitant. After a long and tedious research work, the families of the 3 pilots were found Place Urbain Sénés: A plaque also commemorates the 3rd US Division which liberated Pierrefeu on August 16, 1944.
