In a natural setting sculpted by Aveyron, Penne’s unique village-style architecture, built into the rock, is in harmony with its surroundings: a limestone cliff backdrop. Castle and village combined: Around 560, the castle of Penne was built at the behest of Frédégonde, wife of Chilpéric I, king of Neustria, a woman who would stop at nothing to hold power. Thus she made Chilperic's first wife and his two sons disappear. Her rivalry with Brunehaut, Queen of Austrasia, is famous. War ravaged their states and Brunehaut died on the orders of Clotaire II, son of Frédégonde. Modernised and enlarged, the castle of Penne sheltered Cathars in the 13th century. One hundred years later, the English occupied it for more than thirty years. Finally, the Protestants dismantled it in 1586... Under Henry IV, the stones were used to rebuild the village, which now merges with the castle. Both enrich a site that has become quite unusual.

After leaving the Vère valley, the rock shelters at Larroque surprise hikers and give them access to the Mespel limestone plateau with its holm oaks, filaria and pistachio trees. From the path, hikers have a view of the medieval village of Puycelsi. Larroque offers a shady and picturesque stop-off in a green setting, beside the river, at the foot of a pink limestone cliff with natural caves. It's on the path that the old Puycelsiens (inhabitants of Puycelsi) used to visit the Roucanels (inhabitants of Larroque) that the hiker sets off. Views of the Grésigne national forest and the 13th-century Notre-Dame des Bois chapel (20-minute round trip from Mespel). Legend has it that on two occasions the materials used to build the chapel in the hamlet were found in its present location.

Museum of Memory and Remembrance Formerly the chapel of the nuns of the Ursuline convent, this beautiful building now opens its doors to you as a veterans' house. A handful of volunteer veterans have taken up the torch and are reviving this memory. This house retraces the First and Second World Wars, as well as the colonial wars, in particular a large subject on the Algerian War, with numerous archives.

Today, the cloister houses the municipal school and the media library. This convent was built in the 17th century to provide young girls in the country with Christian education and instruction. During the French Revolution, the convent was partly sold and the remaining buildings were used by the municipal services. Today they house the public school and the media library. The main facade overlooking the square hides the cloister. On the top floor of the old convent is a gallery which allowed the Ursulines to raise silkworms. The mulberry trees present in the schoolyard bear witness to this activity since the leaves of the trees were used to feed the worms!

Built in the 14th century and classified as a historical monument, it is the last gate still visible, whereas the town had five. Montpezat-de-Quercy was once protected by ramparts and ditches. The ramparts were rebuilt in the 14th century to protect the city during the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453) between France and England. The ramparts were defended by several watchtowers (small guard posts) from which the surroundings could be monitored. The ditches have since been filled in but corresponded to the route of the boulevard passing right in front of the Tourist Office, and quite simply called “boulevard des ditches”! Five gates allowed entry into Montpezat. This is the last one still visible, the so-called Hospital. It was formerly closed by heavy wooden doors. Inside these doors a small door had been installed, always closed, which allowed the guards to communicate with passing travelers wishing to enter the city.

A medieval city worth visiting In Montpezat-de-Quercy, you will admire the collegiate church built in the 14th century in the Gothic style by the Cardinal des Prés. Inside you will find Flemish tapestries of high quality evoking the life of Saint Martin and his legend, an important treasure, paintings, English alabasters, statues, precious fabrics, and a 16th century baptismal font. In the heart of the village, the 14th century town gate, the 15th and 17th century Chanoines' house, the Renaissance houses and the squares of the Hôtel de Ville, lined with cutlery, Frédéric Cayrou, the Bicentenaire, the Chanoines' house and finally the 17th century Ursulines' cloister invite you to stroll around. In Montpezat-de-Quercy there are remains of a Gallo-Roman settlement. The town reached its peak in the Middle Ages. Its destiny was linked to that of the Montpezat family, which appeared at the end of the 11th century. In the 13th century, most of the noble houses adopted the Cathar cult. The second family of Montpezat owed its fame to Cardinal Pierre des Prés (1288-1361), a patron of the arts and statesman, adviser to the popes of Avignon, in particular to John XXII, who was himself a native of Cahors. Montpezat-de-Quercy has known the Wars of Religion, the great Revolution and all the upheavals of history, notably the wars of 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 which cruelly affected it.

Gothic building with exceptional Flemish tapestries. Cardinal Pierre des Prés (circa 1280-1361), a descendant of the lords of Montpezat, wanted to have a funerary church to rest in after his death in his native village. He had this remarkable example of southern Gothic architecture built. Served by a college of 15 canons housed in the timber-framed houses visible on the north side, the collegiate church was also a parish church. A rich collection of furnishings remains, a vestige of the treasures accumulated since the Middle Ages thanks to the bequests of the Cardinal des Prés, whose beautiful marble recumbent statue perpetuates the memory. The Virgin with Doves, a work by the Master of Rieux, a 14th century Toulouse artist, the English alabasters, the 15th century Italian caskets, the Pietà from 1475, the woodwork and the paintings, all lead up to the most important piece: the Flemish tapestries illustrating episodes in the life of Saint Martin, woven for the church around 1517-1539 and restored in 2017, a jewel that is a must see.

Just behind the Collegiate Church of Saint Martin, you will find the timber-framed houses from the 15th century. They were the homes of the canons of the collegiate church. The first floor of the houses has a gallery connecting the buildings. The ground floors are made of rubble stone, the upper floors are made of half-timbering and bricks.

The Green Lake, park and garden in Montpezat-de-Quercy At the green lake, you will find a very pleasant setting, in the middle of nature and removed from any visual pollution. Ideal for walkers and fishermen... small fishes are present all day long, carp, roach, common perch. The Lac Vert also has some fine specimens of black bass and pike.

The church was built in the 14th century around a hamlet near the manor of La Bouffie. It appears in the middle of the woods in its superb cream-coloured robe, in the middle of this wolf landscape. The interior is of great clarity. The walls, domes, chapels, choir... are illustrated with frescoes discovered only in 1954. The scenes and characters illustrating subjects from the Bible, Old and New Testaments, are of great finesse in their expressiveness. This exceptional decoration was influenced by the paintings of northern France and the royal court in Paris. It can probably be linked to the construction of the neighbouring collegiate church (decoration carried out jointly by the same workshop at the collegiate church and at Saux).

Bernard Bouyssou, a retired winegrower, and Nicole, will welcome you to discover the Quercy region where life is good. Bernard will be able to tell you about the profession of a farmer and about Biodynamics, still practised on the estate.
