Following rivers, crops and meadows, crossing streams, the itinerary will lead the hiker to the Vère-Grésigne leisure centre from the village of Castelnau-de-Montmiral. The hiking trail starts at the foot of Castelnau-de-Montmiral, whose name comes from Castelnou, meaning new castle, and mon mirailh, meaning a mountain. The village stands on a promontory on the edge of the chain of hills along the left bank of the Vère. This position, which enables the upstream and downstream parts of a large part of the river basin to be watched, was perfectly suited to a castle and a village in the Middle Ages. Following rivers, crops and meadows, crossing streams, the itinerary will lead the hiker to the Vère-Grésigne leisure centre.

Over a distance of 23 kilometres on the GR de Pays path, this stage takes you on a visit to the heart of the fortified medieval towns in the north-west of the Tarn, between Castelnau-de-Montmiral, Cordes and Penne. Relive the history of these bastides through their exceptional historical heritage, like a journey through time. The view from the village of Penne and its imposing medieval fortress built on a rocky spur above the Aveyron Gorges is not to be missed!

Superb views of the bastide town of Castelnau-de-Montmiral, vineyard crossings, hillside landscapes: this walk offers you all the beauty of the Gaillacois in a single route. The 8-kilometre-long Gradille Path passes through woodland (pubescent oaks and maples) and vineyard slopes, to the delight of your eyes. During your walk, you can admire the panorama of Castelnau-de-Montmiral, the chapel of Gradille dating from the 11th century or the small bridge which allows you to join Saint-Jérôme to Gradille.

The Grésigne state forest is the largest in the Tarn and one of the largest oak forests in Europe. It is the third richest forest in Europe in terms of insects, with 2,400 distinct families, after the Fontainebleau massif and the Bialoweja reserve in Poland. This entomological wealth was also the reason why the forest was classified as a Natura 2000 site in 2007. Special management measures are applied in the forest to preserve this particularity: by conserving old trees and increasing the amount of dead wood left on the ground.

The Château de Mayragues (12th - 17th century) and its pigeon loft built on 4 columns, both listed as Historic Buildings, surrounded by its bio-dynamic vineyard, sit proudly in the midst of the magnificent rolling countryside of the Bastides Albigeoises. The Château de Mayragues is one of the few remaining examples of the regional fortified architecture with a half-timbered, overhanging gallery surrounding the top of the château built of the light-coloured local limestone. The splendid pigeon loft sitting on 4 stone columns, typical of the Languedoc region, the formal box parterre, the vineyard ( cultivated in bio-dynamics since 1999), the surrounding woods and fields of sunflowers and corn, make an ideal setting for the summer concerts which have been performed in front of the château for the last 20 years. The château and the pigeon loft have undergone an extensive 35 year restoration programme using traditional meterials of stone, wood, lime and sand, and in 1998, during the course of the restoration, were awarded the Grand Prix of the Vieilles Maisons Françaises. The half-timbered gallery provides a unique setting for the guest B&B bedrooms and an extensive view over the garden and the surrounding countryside. Cayla is the birthplace and home of Maurice and Eugénie de Guerin, a brother and sister who were both writers and romantic poets. This fine country house is surrounded by parkland and is classified as a site of special interest. In the heart of the vineyards, between Cordes-sur-Ciel and Gaillac, this traditional Languedoc manor house is the birthplace of the Romantic poet Maurice de Guérin (1810-1839), known for his prose poems "Le Centaure" and "La Bacchante", and his diary "Le Cahier Vert". His sister Eugénie (1805-1848) wrote a diary for him, which is a precious testimony to life in the Tarn in the 19th century. In addition to the visit of the castle, the museum hosts cultural events throughout the year on the theme of poetry, literature and the arts. In the park, hiking trails, including a literary trail, encourage strolling and are all ways to feel the special atmosphere of this place.

The national forest of Grésigne is around 9000 acres of pure liberty. It’s Europe’s biggest forest of sessile oak and a place that is both wild and unique. A rich variety of wildlife lives here and you will often see stags, deer, otters, weasels and more than a hundred different varieties of nesting birds. The Grésigne provided firewood and some carpentry, wood for the staves used in the cooperage for Gaillac wine, charcoal until the 1950s and wood for the furnaces of the Grésigne glassmakers, the last of whom died out in 1850. The rationally exploited and maintained forest is today a place for big game hunting. The highest point (Montoulieu, 480m) of the primary era, made of sandstone, gave its name to the Grésigne forest. The surrounding plateaus are from the Jurassic period (secondary era) and are composed of limestone. The Romans having occupied the Grésigne, there remain oppida (earthen mounds used for defense), vestiges of camps and a Roman road on the territory of Puycelsi. A protected nature with an exceptional fauna and flora, an enchanting place where reigns the mystery of a great secret, the glassmakers of Grésigne.
