Camping Le Soleil des Bastides in Cahuzac-sur-Vere: Nature and Discoveries

Cahuzac sur Vère is a charming little village nestling on the banks of the River Vère. Take the trail to discover the local heritage and the beautiful rolling countryside on the Gaillacois hillsides. The wash-houses had a social role, and were known as the ‘women's parliament’. They were used not only to wash clothes, but above all to rinse them. Each family was allocated the use of a washhouse. You can see three of them along the route. ‘Granejouls’ comes from ‘Grenier de Jules’. The construction of the Toulouse-Capdenac railway brought to light a number of Roman-era infrastructures, which are on display at the Musée St Raymond in Toulouse. You'll see the Cahuzac viaduct, commissioned in 1864 to allow trains to cross the valley. It is 378.50m long and has 19 arches.

A very pleasant walk through centuries of history and typical Gaillac landscapes (vineyards, hillsides, valleys, riverside). Stop off at the Château du Cayla museum to enjoy the romantic atmosphere. A number of streets and squares in the Gaillac area bear the name Hautpoul, in memory of General Comte d'Hautpoul, who grew up in the Château de Salette (commune of Cahuzac). He was present at all the Napoleonic battles and his actions led to decisive victories, such as at Austerlitz. Vieux was a very ancient place of pilgrimage, the most important in the Albigeois region until the end of the 15th century, when the bishop of Albi decided to take the relics back to Albi cathedral. The imposing church remains. 1 km from the village is the menhir of Ste Carissime (or Peyre Levade). Halfway along the route, take in the pastoral charm of the Château du Cayla, a 15th-century manor house and birthplace of the Romantic poets Maurice and Eugénie de Guérin.

The trail winds its way through the hillsides of the Gaillacois region, where the vines are very much in evidence, marking the landscape with their undulating lines. Hikers will discover a noble heritage (châteaux) and a wine-growing heritage (vineyard sheds, dovecotes, farm storehouses). Mauriac castle, founded by a Templar, was embellished with pastels in the 15th century. It was besieged by Catholic troops during the Wars of Religion. In 1960, the painter Bernard Bistes bought it and undertook its renovation. The château can be visited and rented. Not far away, Château de Salette (13th and 15th centuries) was the home of the youngest branch of the Toulouse-Lautrec family. The famous General d'Hautpoul grew up here before playing a major role in the Napoleonic Wars. In 1994, the Salettes vineyards and château were purchased to become a hotel, restaurant and wine estate.

A place where Maurice and Eugénie de Guérin, the romantic poets of the early 19th century, lived and drew inspiration. The Cayla estate, with its ancient countryside atmosphere, invites you to take time to combine landscape and literature. A castle dedicated to literature: A traditional Languedoc manor house, built from the 15th to the 19th century, the Château du Cayla has become a departmental museum hosting exhibitions and literary events. This is due to the fact that it was the birthplace of the romantic poet Maurice de Guérin (1810-1839) and his sister Eugénie (1805-1848). A prose writer and poet whose work was at the crossroads of the religious romanticism of Chateaubriand and the "poetic modernity" of Baudelaire and Mallarmé, the châtelain du Cayla was published by George Sand. Valuable pages from her diary 'Le Cahier Vert' recall her affection for the place. We also owe a diary to his sister, a first-rate document on the mentality of Tarn life in the 19th century.

The Sentier des Quatre Châteaux (Four Castles Trail) takes you through the village of Sénouillac and the surrounding area, passing close to a number of private châteaux. Along the way, you'll also discover the vine-covered hillsides that have made this region so rich and famous. The name of the route refers to four châteaux: de la Bonnette, de Linardié, de Saint-Martial and the most famous: Château de Mauriac. The latter is the only one open to the public. The painter Bistes bought it in the 1960s and completely restored this 15th-century building, which is thought to have been built by the Templar Guiriaudus de Mauricius. Exploring the 13 kilometres of this trail, you will walk along on the limestone rocky trails which run through small valleys adorned with the Souel-Livers’ plateaux cliffs. You will also discover its delicate vine landscape where the white stone brightens up the stunning local architecture. The other inspired hill : As an architectural tribute to the passing of time, Cordes sur Ciel holds an intense power of seduction that knows how to act on great minds. In 1908, Thomas E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) met it, forgotten: "An artist could (...) paint here for a year without repeating himself, and all his pictures would be beautiful: it is a dream city with also, in addition, a touch of nightmare". In 1954, Albert Camus noted: "one travels for years without really knowing what one is looking for (...) and one suddenly arrives in one of those (...) places which await each of us in this world. The traveller who, from the terrace of Cordes, looks out over the summer night, knows that he does not need to go any further, and that if he wants to, the beauty here (...) will take him away from all solitude".

The Gorges de l'Aveyron are famous and we come there for sports, cultural activities but also these small villages like here in Laguépie where there is a beautiful beach with watched swimming in this wild river "Viaur".

A trip on the River Tarn aboard a traditional flat-bottomed boat. Various departures from the banks of the Tarn between 11:00am and 6:00pm. ‘L’Hirondelle’ and ‘Les Copains d’abord’, scows with a traditional flat bottom, cruise along the Tarn and offer passengers unexpected panoramas of Albi’s heritage and a tranquil atmosphere on the Tarn. The Toulouse-Lautrec museum is located in one of the most beautiful corners of Albi: the Berbie Palace. The Palace is one of the Episcopal City’s major sites with World Heritage status. The museum is recognised internationally for the works of this artist from Albi. TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, A UNIQUE COLLECTION IN THE WORLD The world’s most important public collection of the works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, including 31 posters by the lithograph painter, is to be found in Albi. There are also no fewer than 219 paintings, 563 drawings and 183 lithographs displayed in the museum. Early works, major portraits, paintings of brothels, prints from the world of entertainment, advertisements and later works are presented there, giving this museum an exceptional collection. Each stage of the production is represented, highlighting his gift for observation, his talent as a draughtsman and his quality for capturing significant detail. The route around the museum is enriched with information panels. To visit the museum is to meet the man, this native of Albi, of whom this city is so proud. The first rooms are devoted to his early works representing his family, his friends and his favourite theme: animals. Cayla is the birthplace and home of Maurice and Eugénie de Guerin, a brother and sister who were both writers and romantic poets. This fine country house is surrounded by parkland and is classified as a site of special interest. In the heart of the vineyards, between Cordes-sur-Ciel and Gaillac, this traditional Languedoc manor house is the birthplace of the Romantic poet Maurice de Guérin (1810-1839), known for his prose poems "Le Centaure" and "La Bacchante", and his diary "Le Cahier Vert". The Château de Mayragues (12th - 17th century) and its pigeon loft built on 4 columns, both listed as Historic Buildings, surrounded by its bio-dynamic vineyard, sit proudly in the midst of the magnificent rolling countryside of the Bastides Albigeoises. The Château de Mayragues is one of the few remaining examples of the regional fortified architecture with a half-timbered, overhanging gallery surrounding the top of the château built of the light-coloured local limestone. The splendid pigeon loft sitting on 4 stone columns, typical of the Languedoc region, the formal box parterre, the vineyard ( cultivated in bio-dynamics since 1999), the surrounding woods and fields of sunflowers and corn, make an ideal setting for the summer concerts which have been performed in front of the château for the last 20 years. The château and the pigeon loft have undergone an extensive 35 year restoration programme using traditional meterials of stone, wood, lime and sand, and in 1998, during the course of the restoration, were awarded the Grand Prix of the Vieilles Maisons Françaises. The half-timbered gallery provides a unique setting for the guest B&B bedrooms and an extensive view over the garden and the surrounding countryside. Visiting the winery, tasting the bio-dynamic wines of the domain, or simply relaxing in the garden are the ideal complement to discovering the treasures of the Bastides Albigeoises.

A recreational lake with a number of activities depending on the season: supervised swimming, water slide, canoeing and kayaking, pedalos, fishing, shaded picnic tables, barbecues, mini-golf and tennis. Once owned by the Carmaux Colliery and Railway Company, who used wood from the forest to make railway sleepers in the mines, today you can still find oak and chestnut trees, lovely beech trees, hawthorn and some conifers. The Sivens forest is an extension of its "big sister" the Grésigne forest. Until the beginning of the 20th century, a whole working population lived from and in the forest. Pitsawyers, ruscassiers extracting the precious tannins from the oak bark for leather work, charcoal makers producing charcoal... Mixing with the oak forests, coniferous trees have been planted more recently to supply the props for the Carmaux mines. At the gateway to the Gaillac vineyards, the Maison départementale de la forêt is dedicated to raising awareness of the environment and leisure activities, and offers a full range of facilities for discovering the forest: events, themed exhibitions, interpretation and hiking trails. In autumn, don't miss the mycological outings in these woods, which are rich in mushrooms. Listen up! It won't be long before you notice the presence of the hosts of these places. At the beginning of autumn, you will hear the bellowing of the stag in the distance. And there... it's a roe deer! Here it's the wild boars that have stripped the ground bare by digging it up. Ah, a dead tree! You may be lucky enough to discover a giant! Well, almost, it is the Lucane Cerf-volant, 8 cm long, it is the largest beetle in Europe.

The Archéosite archeological museum will take you back in time to rediscover an era when the village of Montans was famous throughout the Roman Empire for the production of Samian pottery. These high quality red ceramics were produced on an almost industrial scale here. The museum also offers beginners’ workshops in pottery and mosaic work, archeological conferences and even an Antiquity Week in April, featuring historical re-enactments.

Domaine de Peyres-Combe, located at the start of the Cordais plateau, is on the GR36/GR46 long-distance hiking trail (Chemin de Compostelle). The surrounding vineyards will enchant you! The sweetness of the Gaillac wines will be a perfect accompaniment to foie gras and duck breast. The rooms have been completely renovated. It's an ideal holiday home for recharging your batteries and spending a holiday full of discoveries with family and friends. The house was renovated in 2013 and is therefore completely new, to accommodate up to eight people. It comprises two bedrooms with double beds, one bedroom with bunk beds and a cot, a large fully-equipped kitchen with dining area, a spacious living room with a sofa that converts into a bed, two bathrooms and two toilets. The house also offers two outdoor areas: a courtyard at the rear of the house and a garden around 50 m away. The small medieval village of Salles sur Cérou is ideally located, close to the city of Cordes sur ciel and 25km from the UNESCO World Heritage city of Albi and the Gaillacois vineyards. You can also explore the region on foot or by mountain bike, thanks to the many footpaths.

A beautiful Tarn farmhouse nestled in the heart of the hamlet of Lacapelle. The house has been tastefully restored using traditional and ecological materials. The interior is full of surprises in terms of decoration and atmosphere. A vast covered terrace overlooks the rolling, wooded landscape. Two en-suite bedrooms sleep up to 6, and a lounge with library and piano are also available. Here, guests can also discover the benefits of shiatsu, a treatment method of Japanese origin, as well as a wide choice of walks starting from the chambre d'hôte. A summer kitchen is also available.
