This beautiful hike will delight keen walkers and offer a superb panoramic view over the northern Alps, Mont Blanc, Lake Geneva, the Aravis mountains, the Glières plateau and the Arve valley. One of its assets is that takes walkers across a karren plateau in a magnificent mineral setting! With a bit of luck, you’ll get to observe the chamois and admire some amazing alpine flora such as edelweiss, martagon lily and yellow gentian! Take your binoculars and camera with you, and possibly some walking poles. To reach the hike’s departure point, allow about a 50 minute drive from Annecy centre. Follow the signs towards Villaz, Aviernoz, then Thorens-Glières. Then take the road towards Mont Piton and Les Cheneviers. You’ll find Cheneviers car park, your departure point, at the end of the road at an elevation of 1,090 metres. Your ascent is via the Passage de Monthieu (Combe Arembeau) and the descent via the Trou de la Pierre and the Col de l’Enclave. The best time of year to walk to the Sous Dine cross is in spring or summer when the mountain vegetation is in full bloom. We do not recommend you take this itinerary in poor weather conditions because the path can get slippery. This hike is not recommended for children.

This climb takes you into the very heart of the Glières Mountains, close to the monument to the Resistance. After overcoming the extremely steep slopes just before the Col du Collet, the 5% gradient below the Col des Glières will feel like a breeze. Hiking between the Glières plateau and the Champlaitier mountain pasture. Following in the footsteps of the Spanish Resistance Maquis, cross the Montagne de Frête to reach the superb Belvédère du Pas du Roc on this route steeped in history. This loop, starting from the Col des Glières, takes you on either side of the Montagne des Frêtes. After an initial section in the Frêtes forest, you'll reach the Champlaitier mountain pasture, with views of the Chalet du Plan and Maison Neuve. This vast area is in bloom according to the season (daffodils, etc.), with a meandering stream. An ideal spot for picnics. Along the Nant des Brassets, you'll make your way to the Belvédère du Pas du Roc, where the stream continues its descent to La Filière, tumbling over the cliffs. The waterfall is reached by a steep, winding descent reserved for experienced hikers. Straddling the Plateau de Champlaitier and the Plateau des Glières, the route takes you into the heart of an area with a rich historical heritage. The trail's name pays tribute to the feats of arms of the Spanish maquisards. These Republicans were deported to Annecy in 1940 for their opposition to Franco's dictatorial regime. During the Occupation in 1942, they joined the French Resistance, refusing to join Germany as forced by the Vichy regime. The Spanish Maquis played a key role in the February 1944 call to receive weapons parachuted onto the Plateau des Glières by the Allies. Under the command of Tom Morel, their mission was to protect the Petit Bornand access road, the most difficult to defend.

This easy and interesting walk will make you discover the history and the landscapes of the Plateau des Glières, at an altitude of 1500 m, inside the Bornes Massif (34km from Annecy). This used to be a major place for the French Resistance in Haute-Savoie. "Here, men died to stay men..." But it is also a special site for pastoral agriculture. The first part of this trip follows a broad rocky path, defined by signs which tell you more about the history of the members of the Resistance, the "maquisards". During the second part, a trail winding through the forest leads to the historical landmarks of the Plateau des Glières. If you do no wish to picnic, you can taste the specialities of Savoie in several typical mountain restaurants. Do not forget to pick your camera, because you will discover many beautiful panoramas.

This is an unusual stage, as we start by descending into the Borne valley at Entremont, and then make the long ascent to Lac de Lessy. A little more distance than the day before, and a little more ascent. This third stage, starting from the Plateau des Glières, takes you to the Lessy lake and refuge. You'll make your way through the Borne valley, passing the site of Montriévray, a heroic battleground during the attack on the plateau in March 1944, before arriving at Entremont. Finally, you'll reach the Col de la Forclaz, where you'll be treated to an exceptional view of the Lac de Lessy, a natural site that is home to an important pastoral activity. The Lac de Lessy and its refuge, nestled in the foothills of the Pic de Jallouvre, are the high point of this day. Swimming in Lac de Lessy is forbidden, as its fragile ecosystem must not be disturbed!

A hike at the gates of the Aravis ! Discover the hamlets of the village of Petit Bornand (Glières-Val-de-Borne): Beffay, Saxias, le Villard, Chef-Lieu, les Lignières and Morat, you will discover a rich cultural and natural heritage. During this hike you will be able to see: the old castle of the Fichet account, the presbytery, a sulfurous spring, old farms, a chapel, the old house Guillaume Fichet... As for the landscape, you will have a view of the different peaks that surround the village: the Rochers de Leschaux, the Jallouvre peak, the Pointe de la Ballanfat, Rochers des Traversiers...

This hillside slopes are strong and covered by forest. Slope cotation : 11.2%. The Tour de France has been here in 2018 and will come back on 2020. The road led to the mountain pasture of the Plateau des Glières, you can cross this Plateau (stone path) to link with the Col des Glières (1400m).

Hike through landscapes of limestone rock, spruce forest and alpine pastures, in a place where history has left its mark. Walk in the footsteps of Officer Morel, whose charisma and determination instilled the spirit of Les Glières. Departing from Le Petit Bornand, this long hike takes you to the Plateau des Glières, passing between the foothills of Montagne des Auges and Montagne des Frêtes. Following a forest path, you first climb up to Fréchet. From here, you'll have a fine view over the Val de Borne, and you're at the gateway to the Plateau des Glières. Take the opportunity to contemplate the beautiful pasture landscapes stretching out before you: the Pâquis mountain pasture, the Chez Constance mountain pasture, the La Perrière mountain pasture... The area is steeped in pastoral tradition, which you'll be able to immerse yourself in as you stroll along. You'll also have the chance to sample local specialities at the famous Chez Constance Refuge-Restaurant. Walk in the footsteps of Théodose "Tom" Morel. The trail pays tribute to the lieutenant, leader of the Haute-Savoie Maquis during the German occupation between 1942 and 1944, whose feats of arms resonate in the memories of the Resistance. The round-trip route takes you as far as the Col de Glières. However, don't hesitate to extend your journey to the Monument National à la Résistance, inaugurated in 1972 with a speech by André Malraux and now classified as a Historic Monument.

This hike of average difficulty with a few harder parts is still accessible to everyone who enjoys walking, including children. The higher you will go, the wider will your point of view be, discovering an amazing panorama over the Aravis range, the Jalouvre (Bargy), the Lachat de Thônes, the Parmelan, and of course, the Mont Blanc and the Glières Plateau. In summer, a cowbell chorus will give rhythm to your steps. Take a break during the hike to discover the life of the alpine inhabitant and taste the Reblochon fermier and the goat cheese. A restaurant at the car park and a shelter at the top will be good places to have a snack or a drink. In winter, this hike can be made by most amateur hikers who know how to use snowshoes and know the place. Follow the markings !

This hikes has an original panorama of Lake Annecy and crossing the plateau will make you discover an exquisite and uncommon mineral world. The Plateau du Parmelan can be reached through different paths. Starting from the Chalet de l'Anglettaz, at an altitude of 1500m, is the shortest hike. However, the road leading to the last parking lot has many potholes during the last four kilometres. This road is not suitable for every vehicles. The hike to the Parmelan goes through some lapies and we advise not to bring very young children or to do this during damp and foggy days.

The Plateau des Glières boasts numerous pluses, not least the variety of its ski slopes, the quality of its well-maintained trails, its proximity to large towns such as Annecy and to the Arve Valley and, last but not least, the wide range of activities available in the area. The Plateau des Glières offers 29 km of cross-country ski trails, varying in difficulty (from black to green) and timing (from 1 hr to 3 hrs or day-long skiing). When you stop for a rest, you can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of one of six restaurants on the Plateau, where you will be able to taste some of the local specialities. The castle of Bonneville also called Castle of the Sires of Faucigny is located on a rocky hillock at the foot of the Mole, built in the 13th century around 1260 by Beatrice de Faucigny on the advice of her father Peter II. It is the only surviving example of medieval Savoyard military architecture in the Savoy region This vast building oriented East-West corresponds to the regular plan known as "Savoyard square": a quadrilateral with a cylindrical tower at each corner. Only two corner towers remain, linked by a curtain wall of 18 meters to the east. On the south wall, one can observe a Gothic window with double ogive, probably corresponding to the ceremonial room of the castle. Successively a seigneurial residence and then a count's residence, it became the seat of the châtellenie, following the fire of 1392 which destroyed the dwellings. From the 16th century, the castle was transformed into a prison, which saved it from ruin. It kept this assignment until 1934 and during the Second World War. The castle marks the birth of Bonneville and remains one of its most remarkable monuments. It has been listed in the Inventory of Historic Monuments since 1987. Its renovation continues every year.

Welcome to the Bois des Tours municipal campsite in Bonneville, located in the heart of the Haute-Savoie, in the city centre, away from the noise and the traffic, at the foot of the mountains. Motorhomes are allowed all year round and vans and caravans are only allowed to stay during the high season (1 July - 31 August) when the sanitary facilities are open.

The church of Sainte-Foy in Contamine-sur-Arve has been listed as a historic monument since 1909. Guided tours are available to find out more about its history. Contact the tourist office. Sainte-Foy church in Contamine-sur-Arve, listed as a historic monument since 1909, was built around 1295. However, in 1589, half of it was destroyed and never rebuilt, as can be seen from the façade, which consists of a rough infill under a double arch separating two bays. This religious building was part of a Cluniac priory founded in Contamine in 1083 by Guy de Faucigny, Bishop of Geneva, which disappeared at the beginning of the 17th century. Until 1268, it was the burial place of the Lords of Faucigny, a family that played an important role in the history of Faucigny from the 11th to the 13th century. Architectural similarities have been noted with the castles in Wales and the castles of the States of Savoy in Switzerland, built by Jacques de Saint-Georges, an architect specialising in the construction of fortified castles. However, the name of the architect who worked on Contamine is not known, as Jacques de Saint-Georges did not return to Savoie after 1275, when he moved to England.

Château de l'Echelle is a monument that has lived many lives. Built at the very beginning of the 13th century, it fulfilled its military role throughout the Middle Ages, before being modified in the 16th and 17th centuries for a long, more mundane and pleasant life, until 1973. After a brief stint as a scrap metal dealer, it has been owned by the town of La Roche-sur-Foron since 1982, and is a much-appreciated cultural center. As well as being regularly open for art exhibitions and cultural events, it is home to a learned society and its university library. The 4-hectare park, with its incredible views over the Arve Valley, is a popular public promenade for locals and visitors alike.

Chapel near Château de Thorens The Château de Sales, in which Saint-François de Sales was born, was destroyed during the French occupation of 1630. In 1672, his nephews erected the present chapel on the site of the room where the Saint was born. Inside the chapel, the Baroque altarpiece dating from 1677 is perfectly preserved. It was in the chapel of the former château that Saint-François de Sales was inspired by God to create the Order of the Visitation with Sainte-Jeanne de Chantal. The cross beside today's chapel was erected on this site in the 19th century.

Born on the Plateau des Glières at an altitude of 1400m, I wind my way between Glières and Parmelan, before flowing into the Fier 24 km further on. Sometimes wise, sometimes wild, I visit the communes of our land that bears my name: Pays de Fillière. Like a hyphen, I cross the communes of Thorens-Glières, Groisy, Les Ollières, Charvonnex, Saint-Martin-Bellevue and Villaz. Evires sends me the Daudens, Aviernoz the Nant de l'Aup and Nâves-Parmelan watches from afar. I used to turn the mills to thresh hemp and grind flour. I wasn't always a good girl and often got out of bed.

Facing the superb Aravis mountain range, on the foothills of the Salève, discover a magnificent panorama all the way to the Mont-Blanc chain, on the ancient Roman road linking Geneva to Annecy. It is a piedmont of the Northern Alps, below the Bauges mountains, deeply carved by the tributaries of the Arve, Fier and Usses streams. Take advantage of this haven of peace, where bucolic trails criss-cross this ancient glacial footprint, dotted with charming slate-roofed villages and wild ponds, where enthusiasts will discover protected flora such as superb carnation, Swiss woodruff, Loesel's liparis and Marsh lousewort. Along the way, you'll be able to admire the flight of the common snipe, the palucidole warbler or the crested lapwing, but you'll have to make a point of nesting in an observation hut on the Marquis pond. Don't forget your binoculars...

This remarkable aerial passage, carved out of the rock, crosses an impressive limestone bar. In the pre-industrial era, a "glassworks" at the bottom of the valley, which consumed a lot of wood, exhausted the valley's forests and had to draw its energy from the steep mountain slopes. So, around 1830, a passage was cut through the wall that defended the vast Champ Laitier forests. After an hour and a half's walk, you'll be amazed to discover the Champ Laitier pastures and their rich flora. From here, you can continue on to Sous-Dine (2004 m) and enjoy a privileged view of the Jura mountains and nearby Switzerland with Lake Geneva. You can also reach Glières via Les Frêtes.

A magnificent waterfall that gushes out abundantly in spring or during heavy rainfall. Visible from below from the Pont de Pierre on the Plateau des Glières road, or from above after a 1-hour hike.

The Plateau des Glières is a place of remembrance of the Resistance, with the National Monument for the Resistance, the Mémoire du Maquis visitor's centre and the historic discovery trail. Situated at an altitude of 1,435 metres, the Plateau des Glières was chosen by the Allies as a parachuting site during the Second World War. From January to March 1944, 465 maquisards gathered there under the successive command of Lieutenant Tom Morel, then Captain Maurice Anjot, to receive weapons destined for the maquis in Haute-Savoie. On 26 March 1944, they faced a massive joint attack by Vichy and Wehrmacht forces. 129 maquisards and 20 local residents lost their lives, either killed in action, shot or deported. Most of them are buried at the Glières National Necropolis. The National Monument to the Resistance Built in 1973 on the initiative of the survivors of Les Glières and designed by the artist Emile Gilioli, the monument pays tribute to the 465 maquisards on the plateau and to the events of the winter of 1944. In his search for simple, uncluttered forms, the artist was able to capture the spirit of Les Glières while at the same time creating a work of art that speaks to the viewer. This exhibition traces the history of the work, from its conception through to its completion. Accompanying booklet available free of charge from the Mémoire du maquis reception building. National Monument to the Resistance. At the end of the 1960s, as plans for the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Maquis des Glières were being put forward, the idea developed amongst the survivors that it was becoming important "to do something appropriate to mark the event". Selected following a national competition judged by a jury made up of 5 survivors from Glières and 4 personalities chosen because of their knowledge of the art world (such as the chief conservator of Paris' Modern Art Musuem, Bernard Dorival, and the painter Hans Hartung), the National Monument to the Resistance was inaugurated on 2nd September 1973 by André Malraux. The dimensions of the monument are impressive,measuring 15.20 meters high, 4 meters wide and 21 meters long and weighing 65 tonnes. It is not a monument to the dead, but rather a symbol of hope. Its creator, Emile Gilioli (1911-1977), wanted to create a architectural sculpture that expresses the commitment of Glières' fighters and remains in harmony with the surrounding mountains which lengthen it further by their ridge lines. The monument soars like a V of the victory. One of the two arrows shoots up towards the sky as a sign of hope. From the monument comes a solar disc symbolising rebirth and liberty. Its surprising balance reminds us that liberty, always under threat, constantly needs to be secured. The other arrow looks as if it has been snapped off, representing the fact that all victories bring struggles, suffering and death. The monument was conceived as a whole, with the mast and the Pleureuses (mourners) marking the entrance to this site. The interior of the monument was planned as a sacred space; it displays various works that invite viewers to contemplate and reflect. Here you will find the Bataillon's slogan together with a text engraved in the concrete, recalling the fighting at Glières and a drawing showing a tracery of lines representing war. In the back there is a shining statue in the shape of a flame; it also points an arm towards the sky, whilst the other, like the statue, is truncated. The head of the statue is marked by the cross of Christ. It represents Joan of Arc and was offered by Gilioli who had originally made it for the city of Florence. It was the sculptor's aim to bring the concepts of Joan of Arc and the fighters of Glières together to evoke the idea of a resilient France.

This site is a haven of peace with nature that is still pristine. What a surprise for the visitor who, having climbed the limestone escarpments, discovers this plateau, where grassy valleys alternate with rocky crests and conifer forests. At the heart of the Haute-Savoie region, this superb valley is made of limestone rock. It is situated in the Bornes Massif, between the mountains of Auges (1,800 m) and Frêtes, 29 km and 15 km away from La Roche-sur-Foron and Thorens-Glières respectively, and located in the communes of Petit-Bornand-les-Glières and Thorens-Glières. The pass is situated at an altitude of 1,440 m, the Plateau des Glières offers a number of activities. In fact, it is the key meeting place for passionate Nordic skiers in winter, and hikers in summer. In winter, snowshoeing is common, and a toboggan slope is set up each year children. Caving activity is also popular, with some fifteen cavities of over 150 metres deep identified on Les Frêtes. The deepest cavity of which we are currently aware on the Plateau des Glières is the Tanne à Paccot, also known as the "hole of the A2". Its estimated depth is around 400 metres. History lovers will be able to devote themselves to guided tours to discover - or supplement their knowledge of - the events that took place on the plateau during the Second World War that made it a centre of resistance. There is also a discovery trail, to learn while enjoying nature.

The column is one of the most popular monuments in Bonneville, an iconic structure in this capital of the Faucigny. The only monument of its type in the Savoie, it was built in 1826 to honour Charles-Félix, king of the States of Savoy. This construction followed his visit to Bonneville in 1824 and the grant he agreed for the containment of the river Arve. The column features a pedestal decorated with a bas-relief representing a chained Arve, with a Doric-style limestone column (19 m high) topped with a marble statue of the king, almost 3 m high, made by the Cacciatori brothers. Both artists were working on the restoration of the Abbaye de Hautecombe at the time. The bas-relief is a copy that was created in Savoie blue marble in 2012 by Béatrice Sassone Bouvet. It represents the embodiment of the river Arve, represented as a nymph clothed in classic-style robes, half lying in the reeds and held chained by her ankles and both arms. In the background, the mountain decor gives space for Charles-Félix's monogram at the centre of a wreath of oak and laurel leaves.

The restaurant " Chez Constance" has been opened in 1974 by Constance and her husband. This old chalet became overs the years a mountain shelter where it's good to come and recharge. Welcome to the Bois des Tours municipal campsite in Bonneville, located in the heart of the Haute-Savoie, in the city centre, away from the noise and the traffic, at the foot of the mountains. Motorhomes are allowed all year round and vans and caravans are only allowed to stay during the high season (1 July - 31 August) when the sanitary facilities are open.
