Like the mountain bike routes, the gravel path allows you to discover the immense variety of landscapes of the Jura Mountains. Facing the Alps, you will discover the Jura massif through its valleys and plateaus. Along the 384 km of the Grande Traversée gravel marked trail, numerous accommodations await you. Southern loop of the Grande Traversée du Jura on Mountain bike crossing the Planachat ridges separating Valromey and the Hauteville Plateau, the Retord Plateau and the ridges of the Grand Colombier Massif. With a length of nearly 100 km, this marked loop on the two southern variants of the GTJ allows you to discover the southern end of the Jura Massif in a few days. From the banks of the Rhône to Culoz at an altitude of 250 meters at the foot of the giant of Bugey, the Grand Colombier, culminating at nearly 1500 meters, passing through the plateaus of Retord and Hauteville, the circuit takes in varied landscapes and numerous balconies on the chain of the Alps, Mont Blanc and Lake Bourget. Southern crossing of the Grande Traversée du Jura on foot from Valserhône railway station to Culoz railway station in 3 days. With a length of just over 50 km, this marked crossing on the southern end of the Grande traversée du Jura follows the crests and large expanses of the Jura Massif. From Valserhône station to Culoz railway station, two towns on the banks of the Rhône river, this circuit in the middle of nature quickly gains altitude to first cross the Plateau de Retord, then the Massif du Grand Colombier. In these landscapes of wide open spaces, far from roads and communication axes, it is a crossing of mountain pastures, valleys and forests with little or no habitation. Apart from the farms of Retord and their atypical architecture, places favored by the Resistance during the Second World War. Many panoramas are to be discovered along the way with a series of balconies facing the chain of the Alps and Mont Blanc to the east. Hiking from Lake Barterand through the Bugey vineyards. This family loop in the middle of the Bugey vineyards will take you from the sculpted rocks of Lake Barterand to the Cave Bugiste located in Vongnes, wine-growing village with traditional local architecture. This hike can be downloaded on the free app Ain Outdoor.

Ride through the forests on the hills of Chautagne, with an optional loop through the marshlands. Set off from the village of St Pierre de Curtille and follow the marked trails. This is a moderately strenuous hike. Inaccessible during hunting season and in heavy rain. IGN map reference: 3331OT. Tour du lac du Bourget through col du Chat Departing from Culoz, between wild Bugey and the peaceful reflections of France's largest natural lake in Savoie, a cycling route as sumptuous as it is stimulating begins: the tour of Lake Bourget via the Col du Chat. This circuit, popular with road cycling enthusiasts, harmoniously blends athletic challenge and natural beauty. From the first few kilometers, you follow the ViaRhôna and the peaceful banks of the Savières Canal, a true link between the Rhône and Lake Bourget. Then, after skirting the northern and eastern banks of the Bourget, passing through Aix-les-Bains, with the deep blue of the lake as a backdrop, you will reach the southern shore of Lake Bourget. But the highlight of this loop remains the ascent of the Col du Chat from Lake Bourget. The effort is felt as it winds between limestone cliffs, but each pedal stroke offers an increasingly spectacular view. The descent takes you to the majestic Jongieux bends, where the road winds through the Savoyard vineyards. All that's left is to follow the ViaRhôna cycle route, passing through the small village of Chanaz. This comprehensive tour, with its changing landscapes and varied rhythms, offers cyclists a true immersion in an alpine setting spanning lake, pass, and valley. An unforgettable outing, ideal for cycling enthusiasts seeking a balance between performance, pleasure, and contemplation. It is recommended to cycle clockwise to better enjoy the view of the lake. This beautiful ride around the lake is not, however, easy, as it climbs from Bourget-du-Lac to the Col du Chat, the only difficulty on the route, with its 7 km of ascent and 368 m of elevation gain. (It is possible to avoid the pass by taking the Tunnel du Chat, reserved for pedestrians and cyclists).

The Musée des Traditions Vigneronnes (Museum of Winegrowing Traditions) houses one of the largest and most beautiful collections of ancient tools (over 1300) and objects related to the work of the vine and wine. Throughout 3 rooms, this museum brings back to life thousand-year-old arts. The Musée des Traditions Vigneronne was born of the Caveau Bugiste's desire to preserve the memory of the gestures and skills of yesteryear. A family-run business for 4 generations, Caveau Quinard, whose vines are located on the high banks of the Rhône Valley in Massignieu-de-Rives, close to the ViaRhôna, has been organically farmed since 2010. The Quinard estate comprises 12.5 hectares of vines. The vineyards are farmed organically. The Quinard estate is also committed to providing a warm welcome: a smile is the order of the day, tastings of the estate's wines are offered, and numerous tourist brochures (in French and Dutch) are available for customers. Julien Quinard made the commitment to organic farming in 2009, the year in which he converted the entire vineyard to organic methods. Belley, historic and religious capital of Bugey . A bishopric since the 6th century, Belley has left its religious mark on the whole of Bugey: cathedral, churches, chapels.... In Gallo-Roman times, Belley was one of the region's most important towns, benefiting from its position as a crossroads on the road linking Lyon and Geneva. Recent excavations have uncovered a vast spa complex. The town's emblem is the she-wolf, the etymology of Belley referring to Bellone, the Roman goddess of war, represented by this animal. Don't miss the bronze she-wolf in the Grande Rue, sculpted by Colette Sonzogni. 1077: Bugey is ceded by the Holy Roman Empire to the House of Savoy. After the Treaty of Lyon in 1601, marking the attachment of Bugey to France, Belley became the seat of the Baillage and was administratively attached to the province of Burgundy. Saint Jean-Baptiste’s Cathedral was classified as a historic monument in 1906. The building you see today dates mainly from the 19th century but its northern portal is from the 12th century and its apse dates from the 15th century. Historically Belley was the capital and ecclesiastical centre of Bugey. There has been a cathedral in the town since the year 722. The first major rebuilding project of the cathedral took place during the 12th century. This was followed in 1440 by the total reconstruction of the building which only left the northern doorway from the 12th century design intact. The cathedral was extensively damaged during the French Revolution when all of its relics were destroyed along with its bells. Worse was to follow in 1822 when an earthquake inflicted even more damage on building. After this near catastrophic event the Bishop of Belley decided to once again rebuild the cathedral. Architect Antoine Chenavard designed a building in the gothic style, work commenced in 1835 and finished in 1851. This impressive building can be viewed today and houses several works of religious art including a statue of the Virgin Mary by Joseph Chinard.

The Lavours Marsh is one of the last remaining giant marshlands in continental Western Europe. Located near Ceyzérieu in the shadow of the Grand Colombier the marsh covers an area of 500 hectares and is traversed by a wooden footbridge 1.2km long. The Lavours Marsh was declared a Nature Reserve in 1984 to protect the rich and diverse flora and fauna that exists there. Visitors can view this remarkable marshland from a 1.2km long wooden pathway on stilts that allows access right to the very heart of the marsh. All along this pathway there are signs in both French and English that give explanations about the various plants and animals that exist in the marsh. The pathway is accessible to wheelchair users and all the signs are available in Braille for the visually impaired. The only entrance to the Lavours Marsh is located in the hamlet of Aignoz, here you will find plenty of free parking and the Maison du Marais, an interpretative centre that explains the history and life of the marsh. Each year at the Maison du Marais between April and October a program of various events is scheduled that allows the public discover more about the marsh’s flora and fauna and heritage. To access to the swamp, a mandatory parking is at visitors disposal free of charge, at the entry of Aignoz hamlet. It is important de respect the natural reserve regulation: dogs and gathering forbidden. The stilt walk is accessible to people with reduced mobility with the help of an accompanying person.

The Relais de Thézillieu is a restaurant situated in the village of Thézillieu that offers a menu based on authentic "produits de terroir" according to the seasons, from all over France and Bugey in particular to create some mouthwatering dishes. Chef and his staff suggest you a cuisine based on local products of real quality. As Pascal himself says “I love to work with local products and serve a cuisine which is both tasty and generous”. On the menu you will find such delicacies as quail, charolais beef, Bugiste charcuterie, foie gras, and homemade terrines. Additionally there is an extensive wine list that includes some of the finest AOC Bugey wines and other outstanding labels from the best vineyards in France. The Relais de Thézillieu has a small terrace that has room for 15 people with space for another 28 patrons in the main dining room.
