All this with only 400 metres of elevation gain. From the Port de Balès, take the path 50 metres before it, which will lead you to the Port de Pierrefitte, then the path climbs up on your right. The paths of freedom are routes that were used by around 90,000 people during the Second World War: resistance fighters, Allied pilots, Jews and those refusing to participate in the STO (compulsory work service). By attempting to reach Spain, they all hoped to escape the Nazis who threatened their very existence. Haute-Garonne Tourisme and the association ""Chemins de la liberté par le Comminges et le Val d'Aran"" invite you to discover the first part of this route, from the Col de Balès to Portet de Luchon. This hike is suitable for families with good walking shoes. The elevation gain is 547 m, but the route is mostly downhill with a total descent of over 1,000 m. By taking this route via the Col de Balès, you will be following in the footsteps of André Bon. This escapee was taken to Saléchan station via Toulouse thanks to the Françoise resistance network, one of the first to help and involved in the escape of at least 700 people. Like André Bon, who made it to Bénasque in Spain, thousands braved the dangers of the mountains in the hope of finding freedom beyond the peaks of the Pyrenees. A dangerous and demanding human adventure, this gruelling journey cost the lives of more than 2,200 people, victims of the mountains or Nazi troops. You who walk in the footsteps of these shadow fighters, escapees, smugglers, networks of helpers, anonymous people who contributed to the rescues and many of whom never returned... Road closed from 30/11 to 15/04, trail inaccessible. A beautiful hike starting from Port de Balès. You will pass by Lake Bordères and then climb to Pic du Lion, the highlight of the day. This route will allow you to explore the GR de Pays Oueil-Larboust, a 43 km long trail. From Port de Balès, take the trail 50 m before the pass, which will take you to Port de Pierrefitte via a track and then to Lake Bordères via a trail. At the lake, follow the trail climbing up to the left, marked in yellow and red (beware of herds with Patou dogs). Please note that dogs are not allowed in the Massif du Montious reserve.

From Port de Balès, take the path 50 m before you reach the pass, which will take you to Port de Pierrefitte via a track and then to Lac de Bordères via a footpath. Please note that dogs are not allowed in the Massif du Montious nature reserve. Sporty option: From Bourg d'Oueil, follow the GRP signs (red and yellow) to reach Port de Pierrefitte. The elevation gain is 535 metres.

Best visited in autumn during the deer rut and for the multicoloured, shimmering colours of the forest! The start is just after the junction of Bourg d'Oueil and Port de Balès, towards Cirès. Then follow the GRP signs to reach Lake Paloumères, Port de Pierrefitte and descend to the village of Bourg d'Oueil.

Cycle through the heart of the authentic Oueil valley, with its unobstructed views and legendary Port de Balès. You'll finish with a thrilling descent that will make you forget all the hard work. A physically demanding but technically easy climb on a 4x4 track to Lake Paloumères. This is followed by a trail ride, passing through the famous Port de Balès. Another trail takes you to Port de Pierreffite and, as a grand finale, you finish with a technical but thrilling descent.

Hike in the Larboust Valley. As you pass through the villages, you can admire the local mountain architecture. Recognisable by the cross on top of this erratic block, this walk offers a panoramic view of the Larboust Valley. Depart from the car park at the entrance to Portet-de-Luchon, follow the road towards Poubeau, then follow the signs for Labach de Cathervielle. Cross the road to reach La Moraine, then take the Portet-de-Luchon path.

A magnificent balcony trail offering views of the high mountains and valleys. An ideal place to take in the landscape. Start from the car park at the entrance to Portet-de-Luchon, turn right behind the church, then follow the signs to Jurvielle, then Labach de Cathervielle until you reach Cathervielle. Cross the road to reach the Moraine de Garin, then take the Portet-de-Luchon path.

Situated at the foot of the slopes, it will delight lovers of skiing, hiking and the great outdoors.

This half tower, situated in the southwest angle of the first fortification row in front of the defence line, was built on a small cliff and dominated the market square. The fortification wall had been opened for the alley but it is still present in the wall of the building facing it. There is also a turret surrounded by a small garden, from the Jerusalem Hospitallers’ house.

The baptismal basin, made of marble from Lourdes, is dated from the Roman ages. Bernadette Soubirous was baptised on 9 January 1844 over these basins which were originally in the former Saint-Pierre church.

The construction of the Sacré-Cœur parish church started in 1875 on the request of Abbot Peyramale. It was inaugurated in 1903 and the bell tower was finished in 1936. Abbot Peyramale’s grave can be seen in the crypt.

The Garnavie tower (13th century) was named originally the Guigne tower because of its perfect location to keep a close eye on the village and then the castle at a glance. Then it took the name of the part of town where it stands. This tower, a property of the community, has survived the city urbanisation. Listed on the additional Inventory of National Heritage in 1946, it was restored in 1994.

The Roman church was built in the 11th century and housed a necropolis of sarcophaguses made of stone from the Béout. It was destroyed in 1904-1907 because the authorities judged that it was too small and too antiquated to foster the crowds coming to Lourdes. Its furniture, such as some decorative elements, is preserved in the Musée Pyrénéen. In 1991, the foundations of a square tower and a crossing point of antic ways were found.

Bernadette Soubirous had lived in this room of 16 m² with her parents, her sister and both her brothers from May of 1856 until mid-September of 1858. This hovel was the former dungeon of Lourdes, abandoned in 1824. This was the domicile of the Soubirous family during the Apparitions. They left that place in September to live at the Deluc’s place, a pastry cook on place Marcadal.

The Baüs Tower owes its name to the cliff which supported the south part of the city fortification wall. It was located in the middle of this street, where is now the Hôtel de Rome. It was used as a prison during several periods. In 1871, the municipality destroyed it to make easier the passage of cabs and carriages under its vault. The Castle area with its medieval streets led also to this tower.

On March 25, 1858 Bernadette transmitted here in Occitan to Abbot Peyramale the words of the Apparition: « I am the Immaculate Conception ». In 1973, the descendants of Lacour, owners of the building since 1922, transferred it to the city of Lourdes which established there the community library until 2007. The building keeps untouched one part of the wall of its old garden as well as the door through which Bernadette went in.

Close to many activities and visits: the Garonne and the SNCF station are less than 10 minutes' walk away, so you can come by train from Toulouse without your car, as well as joining the TransGarona (cycling route from the Val d'Aran in Spain to Toulouse) or the ViaGarona, a stage on the route to Santiago de Compostela, from Toulouse to Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges, one of France's favourite villages, just 9km away! The Montréjeau lake is just 3km away (30 minutes on foot or 15 minutes by bike) for swimming, water sports and golf. Saint-Pé-D'Ardet natural lake 17km away, formed in an ancient volcano. Bagnères-de-Luchon (skiing and thermal baths), Le Mourtis and Spain are a 40-minute drive away.
