Monein is characterized by its double face, a historical heart and rural districts, spread over 8000 ha. The town center of Monein has the largest Gothic church in Bearn, the church of Saint-Girons. It is impressive by the size of its bell tower and unique by its asymmetrical frame with double hull of reversed ship. In the past, the wine of Jurançon was called the wine of Monein. One could almost say that Monein is the stronghold of the Jurançon vineyard. Moreover, 60% of the production of Jurançon is made in Monein. It is thus the privileged place to go to meet the wine growers. The interpretation path, marked out with 5 panels, will lead you to the discovery of the history of Monein. From the Casterasses, you can imagine the view that the Viscounts of Bearn had from the top of their keep.

This loop from the heights of Cuqueron, passes on sunny hillsides, covered with sloping vineyards, and dotted with large imposing farms. In the heart of the Jurançon vineyard, it will allow you to cross prestigious estates and clos.

This walk allows you to take in the height and enjoy the wide open spaces, while walking facing the Pyrenees. The path that goes up through the forest joins the ridges surrounding the Baylongue. A splendid panorama is guaranteed.

Starting from Lahourcade with its 12th century church, this pretty itinerary in the middle of the vineyards which climbs to the Turon "Déou Castérot", leads you along the paths of the medieval history of Béarn. From there, the view, following the gentle curve of the hills, ends up on the steep peaks of the Pyrenees.

Ideal for family, small bike, wheelchair. The Jacques Barrouillet sports trail was inaugurated in November 2012. It offers three marked circuits; the blue one is a privileged place to walk without difficulties, all flat, well equipped and away from the traffic. It takes place in a magnificent wood of pedunculate oaks. These oaks can be recognised by their short-stalked leaves and their elongated acorns, attached to the branch by a long stalk.

Discover the history and heritage of Mourenx, a new town. From the Belvedere, admire the panorama of this city, born of the incredible energy of the pioneers who made its history. Inaugurated on March 20, 2010, this hiking trail criss-crosses the town of Mourenx. With a length of 4.6 km, you will discover the architecture of the city and its history 5 stations present the birth and evolution of this new town whose existence is closely linked to the Lacq industrial basin. Audio guides are also available to complete your tour. They will show you the construction of the town through videos and testimonies from archives and today. Monein possesses the most beautiful and largest Gothic church in Béarn (15th century). A unique work of listed art in France : framework constructed from oak heartwood of exceptional dimension (50m long and 18m high). Truly a wooden vessel, it comes to life in the light, music and poetry in a spectacle of rare beauty.

This wine growing property in organic farming owes its name to the shape of the dome on which it is located, this place constitutes one of the highest points of Monein. It is the smallest estate of the AOC Jurançon appellation with 0,8 ha. On the large slope on the south side, facing the peak of Anie, are planted the small mansengs which give the sweet white wines with an amber color, fruity and rich at the same time. The big mansengs are on the west-northwest side. This exposure offers dry whites that are rather lively and very fruity. Le Dôme produces dry and sweet Jurançon wines, as well as a "Entre 2" vintage which is a blend of Petit and Gros Manseng.

In the heart of the Jurançon AOC in Monein, the Domaine Bayard is a six hectare property with three hectares of vines; it has been worked in an artisanal manner for centuries, and was bought by the Laborde family in 2016. The goal is to get the best from this old and noble land using the most modern methods (in the winery, the fermenting room, the press, thermoregulation…) and whilst accessing highly developed winemaking skills from abroad, in order to create both dry and sweet Jurançons adapted to today's palates. This is why the wines have already received accolades from specialist French and international wine guides. The new plantations will integrate native varieties, which are designed to retain the fresh and lively taste of Jurançons, despite the general tendency towards global warming.

On the hillsides in Monein, near to Pau and facing the Pyrénées, this eight hectare estate is very old. According to legend, a ‘gersois’ (a person from the Gers) named Montesquiou, came to the Béarn to get married and founded the estate which still bears his name. It has been passed down from father to son. Today Sébastien and Fabrice Bordenave Montesquiou are at the helm, producing five types of wine which are typical of the appellation. The estate includes a traditional Béarnaise house and a wine cellar made from pebbles. Guided tours of the set up, tastings and direct sales are on offer and campervans are welcome.

15 km from Pau, in the heart of the Jurançon vineyards, the gîte is housed in a renovated barn. You'll enjoy a magnificent panoramic view over the Pau plain. You can take part in milking and farm life on this organic farm, and watch the processing of dairy products (yoghurts, fromage blanc, butter, cream...). In the village you'll find signposted footpaths. You can also take advantage of the sale of farm produce. Gîte for groups of 15 people, 3 bedrooms with sanitary facilities in each.

The Domaine is in Lucq de Béarn, a Béarnaise village near Monein, in the heart of the Jurançon AOC region and near to the Barraquet farm. It stretches out over the hillsides of Lucq de Béarn, facing the Pyrénées and is still run by the Estoueigt family, who have been living in the farm and producing wine for generations. In the 1980’s Julien took over the farm and entirely restructured the vineyards. Always looking to improve, Julien is continually working on the Petits Mansengs (a grape variety) as well as the oak barrel ageing process. He also produces the wine plot by plot, thus letting the individual qualities of each section of land stand out. There are eight different wines in the range and guided tours are available in addition to tastings and of course direct sales.

Guided tour to discover the history of the town of Mourenx which is closely linked to the industrial basin of Lacq and whose adventure began in 1957 and 1960 with the commissioning of four gas production units. For the first time in France, a town of 15,000 people was built entirely on virgin and marshy land, near the hamlet of Mourenx, which is now a district of the town. JB Maneval and the architect Douillet drew up the overall plans and the housing, respecting an urban organization inspired by the social scheme of the factory. Bars, houses in bands and individual but also many green spaces with trees and flowers... Mourenx remains a "green city" in the countryside that juxtaposes the rural and urban.

Built in the 12th century by Gaston IV le Croisé, this hospital complex served as a refuge for pilgrims on the Chemin de Compostelle between Lescar and Oloron-Sainte-Marie. Today, the church and hospital are classified as Historic Monuments. In place of the original cloister, a park planted with trees and flowers is home to the former cemetery, which contains an important collection of discoidal funerary steles dating from the 17th century. The 12th-century church of Saint-Blaise is a jewel of Romanesque art. Inside, in the choir, finely sculpted capitals depict biblical and mythological scenes, as well as scenes from daily life.

Lacommande, a stopover in Béarn on the Arles route of the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela. The communal gîte d'étape, open only to pilgrims, is located in the hills between Pau and Monein, in the main building of the Commanderie, an essential part of the hospital network set up by Gaston IV the Crusader. You'll find a room with a large, fully-equipped kitchen, a shower, a toilet and 6 beds (80cm each) separated by awnings. Plus: Tethered donkeys and horses welcome.

Founded in 1020, the church of St. Vincent is a former Benedictine abbey that still possess a part of its 12th century decoration : cornices and vaults. The church houses a religious rarity : a white marble sarcophagus dating from the 5th century, the origins of which are unknown.

Located at the top of the central square of the village opposite the town hall, the MéMo is a public place where it is not obligatory to be registered to read on the spot and spend a moment. Registration is free for all and allows you to borrow documents. Gastronomy is the central theme of this media library, which has an integrated kitchen area for workshops for users and local associations.

Domaine Bru Baché is in the centre of the village of Monein and just around the corner from the church of St.Girons, a classified historical monument. The Bru Baché Domaine already had 20 years of winemaking experience under its belt when Claude Loustalot took over in 1994. His respect for natural growing patterns has led him to adopt sustainable farming methods. Claude does the maintenance work in the spring or at the start of winter. The rest of the year he allows his vines to remain naturally grassy. And to get the best results from the land, coming through in his wines, he uses organic fertilisers. The 6 to 60 year old vines produce six types of wine which are processed in a traditional manner and aged in oak barrels for between 16 and 18 months. Guided tours, tastings and direct sales are available at this vineyard which has ‘Destination Vignoble’ status.

On the slopes of Monein, near Pau and in the heart of the Jurançon AOC. The Guirardel family has been producing wine since before the birth of Henri IV. Over the centuries, they became attached to their property, practicing mixed farming. In the 19th century, the family began shipping wine throughout Europe. The four-century-old winery offers exceptional aging conditions. Today, the Guirardels carefully cultivate their 5 ha vineyard. South-facing, the vines are sheltered in a cirque facing the Pyrenees. This unique terroir, combined with traditional winemaking methods, has produced wines of recognized quality for over two centuries. Owned by the Casaubieilh family for ten generations, this small 5-hectare estate on the slopes of Monein was taken over in 2020 by Marjolaine de Coninck.

At the foot of the hillsides of Cuqueron, a village adjoining Monein and in the heart of the Jurançon AOC region, the Château de Cuqueron is a building of great character which was restored in the 17th century. Nestled on the South side of the hill and well rooted in the draining ‘puddingstone’ Pyrénéen pebbles, the château’s vines benefit from exceptional soil, which is ideal to create a sublime Petit Manseng, the only grape variety produced here for Jurançon. Since 1324, the castle has been an important part of local history, mixing tradition and modernity. The estate also produces Roussanne peaches in season.

On the hills above Monein, this poultry farm focuses exclusively on traditional and organic processing. Self-sufficient in terms of feed, it grows organic cereals (corn and soya) to feed the poultry raised on the farm, and also manufactures feed for laying hens and chickens, sold to fellow farmers and also to private individuals in bags for their hens. The Barrère farm ensures that animal welfare is an integral part of every stage of the farming process. It has chosen to produce the "bare-neck" breed, particularly appreciated for its tender, tasty flesh. The farm's products include chicken preserves in tarragon, lemon or plain jelly, chicken liver pâté (plain or with chilli), chicken basquaise, chicken gizzard confit...

Clos Mazangé is at the foot of the Monein hillsides, a village in the heart of the Jurançon vineyard AOC region, near to Pau and Oloron Ste Marie. The owner, Christian Lombart, welcomes visitors to a traditional Béarnaise house with a small cellar in an outbuilding. He has one hectare of vines which produce around 1500 bottles; production began eight years ago with a 60 % Petit Manseng and 40 % Gros Manseng split. Fermentation happens in barrels and the aging process takes place in vats or barrels depending on the year and the harvest. The Clos has a tasting room which can accommodate up to 25 people. In July and August (subject to availability), guided tours around the vines on a quad bike and trailer are available, ending with a visit to the cellars and wine tasting.

On the way into Monein, on a hillside overlooking the village centre and the church of St.Girons, the Clos Laplume is a traditional estate surrounded by vines. André Laplume relaunched the small family estate around 15 years ago. André and his daughter Camille greet guests in a beautifully converted barn, which features exposed pebble walls, light coloured timbers and a large farmhouse table. Visitors can tour the set up, including the traditional cask storage cellar. Two sweet and dry wines are on offer. These are made with Petit Manseng, the only grape variety grown on the estate.
