Discover the rich heritage of Baerenthal and its surroundings in a sumptuous natural setting. This tour will help you discover the natural and historical treasures that characterise the village of Baerenthal: the Grand Etang and its picnic tables, the silver spring, the ruins of Ramstein Castle. Ramstein Castle was built at the end of the 13th century to control the Zinsel valley. At the top of the ruin, an orientation table describes the panoramic view over Baerenthal and its valley. The underground passages in the rock on which the castle is built are home to a colony of bats, which are protected by the nature reserve.

A beautiful forest trail to discover the natural and historical riches at the Hanau and Lieschbach ponds and the charming old village of Waldeck. - A wooden pontoon allows access to the Lieschbach pond, which is classified as a nature reserve. - Falkenstein was built in the 12th century on a 117-metre rocky ridge and is the most important castle complex in Bitcherland. In 1564, only a few weeks after its sale to Philipp IV of Hanau-Lichtenberg, the castle was destroyed by a fierce fire after being struck by lightning. Some steps cut into the rock and an access ramp allow you to climb to the top of the ruin, where there are still some interesting remains. In a pleasant forest environment punctuated by ponds where wooded hills shimmer, the walker reaches the ruins of the Château de Falkenstein, the most imposing of the castles in the Pays de Bitche. Built in the 12th century on the orders of the Count of Lutzelbourg, in order to protect his possessions in the Haguenau Holy Forest, the castle was destroyed by a violent fire in 1564. The building burned for five days and nights.

Walk through the bog forest, cross the forest road and then the meadow to reach the hamlet of Waldeck, which was originally a farmhouse built below Waldeck Castle. At the pass, climb the forest trail hairpin left to visit the castle Waldeck. Nice view from the platforms (be careful, the stairs are narrow and sometimes steep). Then go back in 2 and turn left then right towards Erbsenfelsen. At this last crossroads you can continue left to see Waldeck Pond.After the rocky Erbsenfelsen and its arch, turn right towards the pond of Hanau. At the junction with the forest road of Hanau, a boundary marker stands next to a partially buried blockhouse. Continue straight on the Waldecker Hubel Forest Road and return to the car park.

Museum Gaspar is housed in the residence of the middle-class family Gaspar from Arlon who had set up in this house (1893) that was built in 1842. It was renovated in 2004. The two most famous members of this family are animal sculptor Jean-Marie Gaspar (1861-1931) and Charles Gaspar (1971-1950) who was a photographer and a sponsor. He gave his house to the town of Arlon on the condition they make a museum of it, dedicated to his brother's work and that put into honour the history and the heritage of Arlon. At the first floor, theree are two restored salons identical to a middle-class salon from the early 20th century that show Jean-Marie Gaspar's sculptures. and the art and picture collection of Charles Gaspar. The rest of the first floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions of the museum that alternates artv and history. A religion room shows collections about the abbey of Orval and to the people's devotion at the 18th century, and also relics from the ancient Saint-Martin church. But the Masterpiece is the famous altarpiece Retable de Fisenne - a 16th century masterpiece from the Antwerp school. It was bought in 1893 by a middle-class family from Arlon, the family Gaspar. Jean Gaspar (1861-1931) was a sculptor. He was trained by the Antwerp sculptor Jef Lambeaux. His works are in bronze and in plaster and they are exhibited in the salons that have been restorated as they were in his house. His brother Charles (1871-1950) was a photographer, a collector and a sponsor. He gave this house to the town of Arlon. It hosts the library of the Archaeological Institute of the Belgian Province of Luxembourg and its secretary office since 1954. A wide part of the museum is also dedicated to temporary exhibitions about art and history of Arlon.

Rich in the Gallo-Roman past of Arlon, the museum houses an impressive collection that bears witness to the daily life of this period.One of the peculiarities of the museum is its imposing and rich lapidary collection, composed of several dozen fragments of ancient funerary monuments.These blocks and the objects from Roman craftsmanship will teach you more about daily life at that time.

Set off to spend half a day discovering the Rhine Valley. By bus and by boat, you’ll have the chance to admire the villages and picturesque landscapes of the Frankfurt region. SEASONAL ACTIVITY SET OFF FROM FRANKFURT AND HEAD TO THE RHINE VALLEY TO SPEND HALF A DAY EXPLORING THE LANDSCAPES AND TRADITIONAL GERMAN VILLAGES. Realising that the small catholic community no longer had a place of worship, his Grace himself, from Pont des Loges, Bishop of Metz and a great builder, financed a chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. It shelters the statue of the Virgin Mary as a child. The front of the chapel shows the door and the window in Neo-gothic style. It was inaugurated in August 1886, the same day as the benfactor died. In March 1945, the chapel was badly damaged in the allied bombardments. After the war, the recostruction was slow until Etienne Olland arrived in 1958. the ltter had a serious illness. he had a statue of the Virgin sculptured and was looking for somewhere to place it and discovered Baerenthal. He accelerated the work on the chapel and installed the modern statue of the Virgin carved by the scupltor Keller from Molsheim and the chapel was named "Notre Dame de a Confiance". From the beginning of May, 1960 up to his death in 1971, etienne Olland organised numerous pilgrimages to Notre Dame de la Confiance. Thanks to him the pilgrimages sprung to life and continue to this day. Discover: The chapel is on the village heritage path "au grès du chemin...notre histoire", a 3,7km circular trail.

Built at the end of the 13th century by the lords of Falkenstein under the bishop of Strasbourg's orders, the Ramstein castle was built to control he access through the Zinsel valley. But during the 14th century, the Lords of ramstein transformed the castle into a den of thieves, robbing and exorting the whole region. Faced with this delicate situation, troops from Strasbourg helped by their allies from Berne organised a punitive expedition against the fortress. With war machines and stone boulders, the Ramstein was entirely destroyed un 1335.

On the banks of Schmalenthalerweiher, the fishing lake at Baerenthal, a wooden observatory has been set up to observe migrating birds in spring and in autumn. There are mallards, kingfishers, hoopoes, herons and many others. You can reach the observatory by the forestry road linking Baerenthal to Bannstein.

Pays de Bitche has a dozen peatmires of which most are protected because of the exceptional vegetation that it shelters. A wooden walkway with descriptive panels has been created at Hanau Lake to explain the rarity and the fragility of this natural environment. From May to September, carnivorous plants, all sorts of varieties of cranberries and gracious dragonflys can be seen. the path follows through into the wood where you can discover the main varieties of trees that grow in this region. The path is approximately a kilometre long, has about 20 descriptive panels and is also part of Pays de Bitche Rock and Peat Nature Reserve.

From 1605 to 1608 more than 200 stones, mile stones and boundary limits, some sculptured, some not, staked out the boundaries between the Duchy of Lorrane and the Counts of Le Petite Pierre, Hanau Lichtenberg and the Duchy of Deux Ponts. Some can still be seen today between Soucht, Meisenthal and Rolbing and between Althorn, Baerenthal and Mouterhouse. Others pass between Eguelshardt and Philippsbourg: these ones have the arms of Hanau on one side and the Lorraine Cross on the other. They can be found along the forestry road to the west of Hanau Lake.

Lieschbach Lake at Philippsbourg is a small peaceful peat mire and lake. On the outskirts of the villages, the 2km walk around the lake offers an exceptional panoramic of the forest and the rock outcrops. Thanks to a small wooden jetty, you can have a close up view of the wide variety of dragonflies that nest here. This lake is a nature reserve and is thus protected. Swimming and canoeing is strictly forbidden. You can reach the lake via the Hanau Lake following the path with the blue cross leading to the Falkenstein castle (35min). By car: coming from Haguenau towards Bitche, turn right after Philippsbourg into the small hamlet called Lieschbach. After 200m, turn right onto a track, continue 100m and there is a small forest car park on your right. Continue on foot to the lake (10min) Coming from Bitche: follow Haguenau and before entering Philippsbourg turn left into the hamlet of Lieschbach.

Emerging from the forest, the tower of waldeck castle is part of the Hanau Lake site. This castle built at the end of the 13th century on a rocky outcrop, often changed hands. Originally it was owened by the Lords of Lichtenberg. Afterwards the castle was owned by the Counts of Deux Ponts-Bitche up until 1570, the date of the last descendant. Several years after the 30 Year War, it was dismantled by troops under the command of the French Marschals and was never rebuilt.

On the same ridge, to the side of the Falkenstein, is Helfenstein castle, "the rock that brings help". In 1410, this castle was built with the money from the villagers in Butten, Kirspach and Birsbach, the Duke of Lorraine's fieifs. It was destroyed in 1435. Several signs can still be seen: walls, a well, carved steps in the rock... Access: The access is indicated from Philippsbourg. Once at the forestry carpark, it takes 20 minutes to reach the ruin.

At the foot of the castle bearing the same name, the Waldeck Lake is classed as a Nature Reserve. This lake is admired all year round ans can be reached by the forestry road leading from Hanau Lake. Because of its fragile flora and fauna, you cannot go around all the lake. Part of the lake is protected and perserved.

In the Zinsel valley, ramstein Plage campsite is an exceptional setting. There is a lake, a sandy beach, a heated swimming pool, a picnic area, games and multi-sports court. Swimming is guarded in july and August. Aqua-gym at the pool. The campsite has a service bay for motorhomes.

These small wooden chalets at the far end of the campsite are ideal for relaxing and getting back to nature. For 2, 4 or 5 people, these chalets, equipped with bunks and an equipped kitchen area give a bit of comfort to camping. The village of Baerenthal has all facilities: Butcher, baker, hairdresser, doctor, nurses. It consists of 2 bedrooms: one with a double bed and the other with 3 bunk beds (with sheets, pillows and duvets). The living room is equipped with a sofa bed, TV, Wi-Fi, furniture with dishes, a large table with 6 chairs and a cooker. The small kitchen has a fridge, microwave, coffee maker, toaster and pots. Bathroom with shower, toilet, towels and bed linen are provided. Washing machine and dryer. The Youth Centre at Baerenthal welcomes groups into a unique natural setting. This centre has 10 bungalows each with 8 beds, 2 chalets with 4 beds, 2 chalets with 2 beds, 7 chalets with 12 beds and a pavilion (13 double rooms + 2 single rooms - each with a bathroom and toilet). The house has been completely renovated in 2019 to make you feel at home: two bedrooms, a living room, a fully equipped kitchen, a shower room with an italian shower, a private garden with a beautiful wooden terrace facing south where you can relax and admire the sunsets.
