Comme tous les étangs des Vosges du Nord, l'étang de Hanau n'est pas d'origine naturelle, il a été créé par l'homme. Son origine n'est pas très bien connue. Il apparaît pour la première fois sur des cartes de la deuxième moitié du 18e siècle. Il doit son nom au Comte de Hanau-Lichtenberg, seigneur du Comté du même nom dont le ban communal de Philippsbourg sur lequel est situé l'étang faisait partie jusqu'au 18e siècle. Il a servi à alimenter un moulin.
