Discover La Combe de Ferriere in Saint-Michel-de-Dèze

The walk takes you to the centre of the old village using the former Royal road, which was once the only track from Chamborigaud to Saint German-de-Calberte. This walk has eleven numbered information panels.

Le sentier descend vers un petit cours d’eau avant de le franchir par une passerelle. La remontée se fait dans les anciennes terrasses et rejoint l’ancien chemin de fer départemental (CFD). Le parcours se poursuit sur le tracé du CFD et emprunte le viaduc. Après le dernier point d’interprétation, le sentier bifurque sur un chemin plus étroit pour redescendre vers le Pont de Champernal.

The sizeable valley in which the hamlet of Flandres stands is known as La Flandonenque and offers lush vegetation, hamlets steeped in history, and the Gardon de St-Germain-de-Calberte with its waterfalls and gours (natural basins). Start by following the dirt track (and stay on this main track). Then leave the track by heading right on L'Escaillou, a skidding track that goes uphill into the woods. At the second road, turn right to reach the hamlet of Flandres. As you leave Flandres, a path goes downhill on the right towards a mill, then joins up with the main track again, which takes you to Nozières. As you leave Nozières, go right at the last house and head for La Fare. The footpath becomes narrower for about 1.5 km. In a sharp bend, it meets a larger track. Turn left and enter La Fare by following the path between the houses. As you leave the hamlet, turn right. Follow the lane for about 100 m and turn left. In another small valley, the path curves to reach Le Vernet on the opposite slope. At Le Vernet, walk below the first house on the right, fork left and go through a barrier and then downhill through the meadow to a sheepfold. The path then joins a trincat (channel for diverting water) to reach a bridge. From the bridge, go up the slope in front of you to return to the starting-point.

A l'ombre des Châtaigniers From the car park behind the church, walk uphill on the road, take the road on the left and then immediately the path on the right that climbs the hillside. Take the wider path on the right. This goes back down through a chestnut grove to a small road (please respect this private property) Turn right onto the road for 300m to the hamlet of La Blichère. As you enter the hamlet, take the path that goes uphill on the right (please respect this chestnut grove, which is farmed). Cross the Valat des Clots ravine and continue on the path which leads to a road. (Optional viewpoint : turn left and then right on the road, then retrace your steps) Take the track on the right that goes steadily uphill and continue straight ahead, ignoring a track on your right. When you arrive at the road, turn right onto it and walk for 180m. Take the path on the right and, at the crossroads, continue downhill on the left (careful: beehives on the right). Continue downhill, ignoring the tracks on your right. At the road, turn right to return to your starting-point (500m).

This trail gives you access to panoramic viewpoints on its mountain ridges, as you follow in the footsteps of the men and women who left their imprint on the schist. A few clarifications:• As you leave the car park, turn right and continue on the road for 150 metres, then go left towards Mas de la Tourette / La Borie.• After Marker 4, take the path that goes uphill on the right. Be careful, some sections are slippery.• At the road, continue left to the hamlet. Then take the path on the right. • At the junction of paths, continue right. • Turn right towards the castle (there-and-back) to reach Markers 6, 7, 8.• Return to the car park on the path.   

Ce petit sentier familial conduit le visiteur à la découverte de hameaux cévenols: le Villaret et le Massufret, tout en surpomblant les gorges du Luech. Take the path that goes downhill from the car park. After 50 m, take the path on the right. At a fork, take the track on the left and, some 20 m further, the path on the right. Two granite boulders open the path that goes downhill between birches in a north-easterly direction. Above the village, take the track leading to Le Massufret. The track overlooks the Luech gorge with its sides of sheer jagged rock. It joins up with the Massufret road amidst former meadows now invaded by young ash trees, growing straight and close together. The road goes past a covered fountain, through the hamlet of Le Massufret with its schist houses with granite lintels, and a few ruins. As you leave the hamlet, take the track that leads back to the Col de la Baraquette.

A forest atmosphere, a birdsong and the murmur of a brook accompany you throughout this walk exploring the mythical mountain ranges of the Cevennes. You will see the Signal du Ventalon beacon, Bougès, Fontmort and, on clear days, even the summit of Mont Aigoual! Leave the car park, turn left and go up the lane leading towards Currières (C3), to the Col de la Planette pass. Continue on the lane for 50 m before taking on your left a forestry track towards the Col de Poulio. At this pass, leave the lane to take the track going downhill on the left (GR 72). Turn left again onto an old path that joins up with the tarred lane, which you take downhill back to the car park.

A few metres after the first bend, turn left and go downhill on a path to reach the road to Peyraube. At the reservoir, go downhill on the road and take the track on the left before entering Peyraube. Continue on this track and pass in front of Les Pièces. Before Les Combes, at the sign for Le Flaquier, take the path on the left towards Les Cabassettes. Go uphill into the chestnut grove, walk in front of Le Flaquier to the second ruin and continue on the path to join up with a track. Turn left onto this track to reach the D 632 road. Turn left onto the road and continue to its crossroads with the D 32. Turn right onto the D 32 for 400 m, then take the path on the left to climb to the Col des Cabassettes pass. At the pass, take the path on the left that leads you through the Roc Troué (notched rock), past the dolmen of the same name and to the D 32. Take the lane towards Peyraube to return to the car park.

En passant par la draille du Languedoc et la ligne de partage des eaux entre Atlantique et Méditerranée, ce parcours, au pied du Bougès, offre de belles vues sur les cévennes, le massif de l'Aigoual et le mont Lozère. Head downhill on the road that goes through the hamlet of St-Maurice-de-Ventalon. Cross the bridge and go back uphill above the isolated house opposite the hamlet. Take the path on the right that climbs above the broom bushes to an enclosure for horses (please close the gates) before coming out onto a road. Cross the road to get to the Col de Malpertus pass. Take the forestry track that forks right and goes uphill to the east into a private forest. Follow the track until it joins the draille, a large track that is also the GR 68 long-distance hiking-path and goes straight up to the Signal du Ventalon beacon. (Optional detour to the beacon with its viewpoint indicator). Head to the Croix de Berthel. Walk past the ruins and take the draille (also the GR7 and GR 68) to Plo de la Nassette. Take the first path on the right, which leads first through a forest and then over a broom heath on the south-facing slope. The path comes out at the temple by the side of the road.

For 4 generations now, this family campsite welcomes you in the heart of the Cevennes between Anduze and Saint Jean du Gard, in the Mialet valley. It is located along the river and has its own private beach. The establishment located at the edge of the Cevennes National Park offers a wide range of activities for the whole family. Activities for children from 3 to 5 years old and 6 to 10 years old, for teenagers from 11 to 14 years old and 15 to 18 years old as well as sports and leisure activities and big family games are organized in July and August, 6 days a week in our air-conditioned yurt. In high season, evening shows, karaoke, open-air cinema, dancing, themed evenings and bingo are organized. You will also find a bar-restaurant-ice-cream parlour with fresh and local products and a mini-market with newspapers and bread baked on the spot every day. In high season, a pizzeria and a straw hut are present. It is also the ideal starting point for numerous hikes or bike rides, in the mountains or along the Gardon river to discover the Cevennes and the Camisards valley. Located in the Borgne Valley, in the commune of Les Plantiers, our Fontfouillouse gîte welcomes you to an unspoilt valley at the foot of a 12th-century Romanesque church. In the midst of the Cévennes chestnut grove, we have created our group gîte. Our accommodation comprises a large living room/kitchen with direct access to the outside, and sleeping areas for up to 15 people. Ideally located, we open our house for a stopover on a hike or a longer stay, a weekend with family or friends. We look forward to welcoming you. Our table d'hôtes is available on reservation, as are products from the chestnut grove. Guided walks available. In summer, there's a supervised lake in the village and river swimming nearby.

Discover an eco-museum in an old mill, with a fun exhibition for everyone. Children and adults alike can take an indoor and outdoor tour to learn more about this important part of our daily lives! In the heart of the Vallée Borgne, in the village's old mill, the Maison de l'Eau has naturally found its place. Around this witness to the past, a modern and entertaining exhibition presents water in the Cévennes. Mister Beaver, the mascot, invites young and old to a more unusual visit, combining questions, games and experiments... An interpretive trail completes the visit with a presentation of some of the tree species native to the Cévennes. This is a fun walk for the whole family, during which you'll come face-to-face with the birds that pass between forest and river. Equipped with a pair of binoculars, you can follow the signposted path to learn how to observe and recognize birds (also downloadable from our website). In addition to visits, the Maison de l'Eau also offers environmental education sessions for schoolchildren, leisure centers and the general public, as well as nature outings (on the trail of the beaver, the otter, the little people of the water...), walks, visits to the village... Come and stroll along the béal, let yourself be lulled by the sound of water on the mill wheels! There are 3 interpretation trails in the Vallée Borgne area, including one on the route of the Maison de l'Eau des Plantiers.

The first church was built on this site. The hamlet of Le-Chambon-de-Dèze grew up around it. Remodelled and destroyed several times, the hamlet was finally swept away almost entirely by a flood in 1811.

  Roupt Bridge bears witness to mediaeval bridge architecture, but also to the violence of floods in the Cévennes. Gardonnades is a local word for the “Cévenol episodes” (sudden violent floods) of the various Gardon rivers, caused by rain coming from the Mediterranean. Because the rain falls on steep terrain that is partly impermeable, rivers swell rapidly and sweep away soil and gravel. In 1907, 1,650 mm of rain fell on Le Collet in 34 days. The 1811, 1861 and 1899 gardonnades were especially devastating. Closer to our day, in 1958 a flood destroyed several road structures downstream of Le Collet-de-Dèze.

This hamlet, located near the path leading to Roupt Bridge, is one of the oldest in the district. Only two small buildings and the wells still exist.

The vestiges of the Château de Dèze, a private property not open to visitors, testify to the importance of the site from the Middle Ages onwards. The current church has replaced the former church located in Le-Chambon-de-Dèze.

In the 18th century, an old stone bridge crossed the Dourdon river. After it was washed away by a violent flood, an “American-style” wooden footbridge was built to replace it in the mid-19th century. The current bridge was constructed for the Route Nationale.

This is the only temple to have withstood the destruction ordered by King Louis XIV after revoking the Edict of Nantes (which had made Protestantism an officially tolerated religion in France). The assassination of the Abbot du Chayla in Le Pont-de-Montvert on 25 July 1702 triggered the Camisard War. The first important action of a group of insurgents occurred in Le Collet on 8 September, during a meeting in the temple. 1703 was also the year when almost all villages in the Cévennes were reduced to ashes by the King’s troops as a reprisal. The parish of Le Collet was partially burnt down on 6, 7 and 8 December 1703. The “Wilderness period” (so called because Protestants had to worship in secret, often in the mountains) lasted from this violence until the French Revolution.

Right at the centre of the old Collet, you can see a row of facades, some of which date from the 16th and 17th centuries. Mullion windows and sculpted bands can still be seen today. Traditional Cévenol dwellings are characterised by the use of local resources (sweet-chestnut wood, stone, render, etc.) and the need to meet agricultural requirements.

Le Collet-de-Dèze was an important stopping-point on the diocese road from Chamborigaud to St Germain-de-Calberte. In the Cévennes, the building of roads suitable for wheeled traffic slowed down from the 16th century onwards, partly due to the King – as a means of bullying the local populations, which had converted to Protestantism – and partly due to the Cévenol communities, which did not wish to make it easier for royal troops to reach them by these new roads. At the end of the 19th century, the village was transformed and modified by new traffic arteries when the Route Nationale was opened and the railway arrived.

There were many mills in the Cévennes, on most waterways.At Le Collet, a canal flowing under the village used to supply water to a series of three mills with horizontal millwheels. This canal, known as a trincat, passed through a partially vaulted tunnel built under the village.

The metal Richaldon Bridge, built at the end of the 19th century, served the mines. It has also experienced flood-related misfortunes. Mining profoundly shaped the economic activity of the Vallée Longue in the 19th and 20th centuries. The antimony mine was opened in the 18th century. It was in use throughout the 19th century and was complemented by a foundry in 1896. All activity at the site ceased in 1951. Lead was mined from 1860 to 1868. From the 19th century on, many farmers were also employed in the mines in La Grand'Combe, alternating mining with their work in the fields. This phenomenon persisted until the 1980s.

At the exit of Mialet between Anduze and Saint Jean du Gard, the Restaurant Les Plans will make you discover a simple and traditional Cevennes cuisine of the most surprising. Located in the valley of the Camisards, this old silkworm farm transformed into a restaurant in 1999, will seduce you by its charm and its setting. On the terrace, in the shade of the plane trees or in the dining room, you will have at your disposal a simple but varied menu with the maximum of local products as well as musical animations in July and August. You will be able to take advantage of the petanque ground, the games room as well as the access to the river at a few minutes.

At the gates of the Cevennes National Park, the restaurant l'Oronge is happy to welcome you in this former stagecoach relay of the XVIIth century. The chef will have in heart to make discover a cooking of greedy tradition to the accent of the cévenol soil. In an air-conditioned restaurant room with exposed stone walls or in a shaded patio, you will be able to choose from a menu of traditional home-made dishes with Cevennes or Mediterranean flavors, changing according to the seasons.
