Fondly known to local people in Saint-Étienne as the "Great Lady of Cours Fauriel" (Grande Dame du Cours Fauriel), the Ecole des Mines engineering school was created by Louis-Antoine Beaunier, a hyperactive entrepreneur if ever there was one! Among other things, he built the first railway in France, between Saint-Étienne and Andrézieux (1827). Many great names have emerged from the Ecole des Mines since it opened: Fourneyron (father of hydroelectricity), Boussingault (father of agrichemicals), Fayol (father of business management), Jean-Baptiste Marsaut (inventor of the miner's safety lamp, the Marsaut lamp), and several international political figures. The historic site of the Ecole des Mines dates from 1927, with its three neoclassical style buildings; the Rotonde was added in the 70s. Somewhat by chance, this place dedicated to popularising science has become an institution in its own right within the School, and the public can still come in to take part in workshops or attend talks on a variety of subjects. The Ecole des Mines has also renewed its educational methods and has now become an incubator for start-ups! Students have the possibility of launching a professional project based on their research subject even before they graduate. It certainly shakes things up when innovation changes its look!

With their funny faces and disjointed limbs (maybe they should hold back on the osteopathy), the giants are at home here. Sometimes lying down, sometimes standing, asleep or just looking thoughtful, no two are the same and yet they are always recognisable. And as I know you're dying to discover their little faces (put like that, they sound less overawing), so I'll give you a tip. Take a walk down Rue Général Leclerc. That's where you'll find the funny toothbrush: la brosse à dent qui fait rire. An off-the-wall work and an idea that could have a future. And while we're in the cosmetics department (the giant is rather coquettish...), here's a mural extolling the virtues of a cream that softens walls. It always draws a smile and makes you want to touch it. You even end up thinking it would be cool if it actually existed. Mission accomplished: it succeeded in giving you something to think about! This garden surrounding the Museum has two styles. The entrance to the top of the Larousse steps gives you a forest walk under the canopy of the trees where the town's former greenhouses were located. The main entrance, by rue Gonnard, opens out onto squares with "tinctorial plants", which have the particularity of producing natural colours as vegetable dyes. Don't forget to admire the park's statues during your visit.

Sometimes known as the Chapeau Chinois, the conical hat (actually a reference to the Mekong pagoda-style roof of the opera house), the Jardin des Plantes is the story of a city giving itself a "green lung" where its miners could breathe the fresh air. Since it was created in 1845, much has changed, but the site remains the unmissable green interlude in the midst of the city. More than just a breath of fresh air, a journey to a different place.
