Tagging n ° 90 "Le Langard" is a varied circuit between woods and meadows. Well for a first discovery or with young mountain bikers, it allows you to discover the Belvédère de la Scie (view of Lake Clairvaux). To note ; the return is on the road.

At the foot of long wooded cliffs, where herds of chamois like to hide, the two romantic lakes of Étival can be found, remnants of the glaciers that used to cover and plane the Jura during the Quaternary. From ETIVAL – THE LAKES, follow the road (yellow waymarking) that cuts between the two Lakes to reach The top of the Lakes. Continue to the right, heading past and along the Great Lake (peat bogs south of the lake) to join up with a forest path at the A Tout Fromant crossroads. To the left, the forest path will lead you to the Chemin du Calvaire (waterfalls). Then climb up the path to your left, that leads to the ridge at La Sea.  The path continues along the wooded ridge to the left, from which you can make out the discrete lake of la Fauge to the right in its combe. Head to L’Espinois, on the edge of the forest road. Head back up the ridge to the left and follow the gravel trail. Using this trail, join up with the road (a steep descent on a narrow trail through the trees) and reach the BELVEDERE OF THE ETIVAL LAKES. Follow the forest path to the north, leading to Sur les Lacs. Continuing in the same direction, gradually head down through the forest (the path is muddy in some areas) to reach the D 308 in Champs Gadout. Take the road to the left for 200 m, then branch off to the left and follow along the forest edge (wet path) before following along the bank of the small Etival lake and returning to your starting point.

With its path through the forest, this lake is one of the most charming walks in the Jura. This glacial lake, nestled at the foot of a magnificent rocky outcrop is a paradise of flowers and birds. Enjoy our nature at its best, breathe in the beauty and simplicity of this spot.

Hiking around this lake is the Grande Randonnée de Pays of 82km, do able over 2 – 4 days on foot and it will enable you to discover all the attractions of this magnificent huge lake: the giant potholes in Pont de Poitte, the bridge of la Pyle, the dam wall, the beaches of Surchauffant, Bellecin and la Mercantine, etc. It is also possible to do this circuit by mountain bike.

Discovery by mountain bike of the territory of Nanchez by traversing the forest and the various valleys of Prénovel and the Piards. Beautiful ride of an accessible technical level, which will take you off the road to practice real mountain biking! From the parking lot of the Prénovel annex town hall, go up about twenty meters to reach the PRÉNOVEL panel at the starting point of the hikes.Reach Les Rochats (mountain bike markings n° 84 red) by a grassy path then take the forest road on the right to quickly reach the Vie des Geais.Climb the path to the right which crosses the grassy valley passing through the Auges Vuillomets.Arrived at the end of LA VIE DES TOURS, cross the road of the Col de La Joux to take the grassy path of the combes de bise which will lead you, after 2 good climbs, to the crossroads of La Corne aux Boeufs.Turn right to take the Trémontagne forest path and continue for 2 km before turning right to take the white Crotchule path towards COMBE DE TREMONTAGNE.From the right, take the old La Trémontagne ski slope, which will take you through a wide open wetland before passing under the high voltage line and, below the Bois de la Joux behind, down to the Chalet du bief Plotet.Turn left on the white path to reach PRENOVEL DE BISE.Carefully cross the road at the level of the fountain, to reach La Passerelle through the coomb, which you cross to reach The crossroads of the bays and take the path on your right overlooking LA TOURBIERE.You can leave your bike to explore this landscaped platform on foot, allowing you to immerse yourself in the world of the Regional Nature Reserve of the Peatland of the Nanchez reach.Continue on Le Cotat Bossu, until reaching L'Arête, passing Sous Duchet.Arrived on the Faicle road, turn right for 200m then join, after the Pont de l'Arête, the Cramoiron.Turn left before the water reservoir and then reach the Chapelle des Piards via fields and agricultural paths.Cross the hamlet to go up to the old hotel restaurant des Rouliers, at the top of the PIARDS.On the right, a path leads you, after Les Huit Fourches, to La Brire: another effort to get there!Continue on your way before carefully crossing the RD308 then joining PRENOVEL via Les Rochats.

A condensed Jura: forests, rocky promontories, flowered prairies, secret peat bogs and small rivers with a “thousand” meanders. Departing from PRENOVEL, take the road (yellow waymarking) around the holiday resort towards Champs de la Vie.  Cross the départementale road with care, and then head through the Champs de la Vie, to reach the Crest Bridge. Follow the forest path to the left until you come to La Faicle. Climb up a steepish slope to the left until you reach the DUCHET BELVEDERE. The trail heads back downhill to the right until it comes to the Duchet Forest. At the junction, the trail rapidly descends towards Sous Duchet. Continue on the grassy path to the right, that overlooks and runs along the stream. Head past Le cotat Bossu and arrive at THE PEAT BOG. Down to your right, take the adapted trail to discover this particular natural environment. At the Crossing of Forebays, continue on the path to your right, cross the stream and reach Le Pontet, at the départemental road. Cross the road with care, and follow it for 140 m before climbing a well-marked steep slope into the forest, punctuated by the BELVEDERE OVER THE FORT.Make a U-turn, head to Le Pontet, and then head towards PRENOVEL DE BISE, through the hamlet of l’Arête. Cross the départemental road again and take a white path through pastures until you enter the hamlet of Belbenoits. Head back downhill to your left until you come to the Walkway. Continue on the white path running parallel to the Nanchez forebay, crossing over the Janiers Bridge. At La Vigne, head back to your starting point via the municipal road.

A hollow carved into the centre of a hill, the Combe de Nanchez landscape is the result of a long human and natural history. Head out along the winding boardwalk, immerse yourself in the atmosphere and unearth some of the Nanchez peat bog's secrets. To the front of the PRENOVEL church, the route heads off to the right (yellow waymarking) via the D 232, then quickly (70 m), take the road descending to your right, bordered by a few houses, until you reach La Vigne. Continue on a good white path until you reach Le pont des Janiers bridge. The path crosses the Nanchez to your right and ascends towards the Cotat Bossu. Following this grassy ridge, the path leads to THE PEAT BOG. Embark to your right along the winding boardwalk, immerse yourself in the atmosphere and unearth some of the Nanchez peat bog's secrets by reading the markers found along the trail. At La Croisée des Biefs, continue in the same direction, cross a new walkway near where the Nanchez meets the Trémontagne creek and come to a road at Le Pontet.Follow the road to the right for 150m and ascend to your left to the Belvedere which overlooks the combe. Go back to Pontet and la Croisée des Biefs the same way. Take the path to your right and cross the Nanchez again. From the Walkway, follow the path to the left and reach the pont des Janiers bridge then, going back the same way you came, return to PRENOVEL.

The telecombi is a teleport with seats and cabins. The Télécombi du Mont Rond, coming from the Col de la Faucille, allows you to access the crests of the Haute Chaîne du Jura; it lifts you from 1323m to 1543m altitude. Once there, the hiker is only 30mn walk away to reach the Grand Mont Rond (1596m), and 2h for the Colomby de Gex (1689m). 2 blue pistes for all mountain biking are marked from the top of the télécombi. In winter, it allows snowshoe enthusiasts to reach the summits with ease and to enjoy the ridges. Please respect the regulations set up by the Natural Reserve of the Jura Range.

The Monts Jura offers the ideal altitude for hiking between 900 and 1723 m. There are marked and maintained trails waiting for you. Since Lélex, the gondola lift La Catheline brings you to the crests of the Haute Chaîne du Jura; climbing from 900m to 1450m altitude. When you get there, you are only an hour and a half walk away from the Crêt de la Neige (172 3m), the highest point in the Jura. At Lélex and Crozet, both gondolas are equipped for MTB riding in summer. Both the Catheline and the Fierney allow mountain bikers to go back up easily and quickly in order to better enjoy the descent on both sides of the mountain! Please note: electric mountain bikes are not allowed in the Catheline gondola. It enables snowshoe enthusiasts to reach the summits easily and enjoy the crests in winter. This "model factory" made available workshops to workers in which they benifited from energy needs to their production in celluloÏd. The building trade had, at this time, innovator architecture and conception. The Great Steam, classified as Ancient Memorial since 1987 and certified heritage from the 20th century, was built in 1905 on the Auguste Chanard architect's plans. This is a model factory with innovatory architecture for the work of celluloid, plastic particularly inflammable. The building trade, a V open-shaped, is composed of two wings divided in two floors of partitioned studios which were rented to craftsmen. Each studio worked on electricity(thanks to hydroelectric energy) and had got fire-fighting system from outside : The Sprinklage system. Work surface was ringed by irrigation channel in which the craftsman threw out caught fire objects. The Great Steam was for his sleeping partner - The Electric Union (private society) a display which should serve the conquest of electric energy's distribution's market in several departments. It was exploited until 1967.

This large and tall feline is elegant and mysterious. Its coat varies from beige to red with black spots, its head is round, and its ears are decorated by wisps of black fur. If all else fails, its short black tail leaves no margin for error should you have the luck of seeing this creature on one of its stops. The Eurasian lynx is capable of reaching speeds of 60 km/h when running!

All sounds can be found in nature. In these limestone reliefs, the tiniest vibration rings out: here acoustic sites are common, so open your ears to hear the surprising concerto offered by the Jura’s landscapes. Any sounds made in this pretty combe are amplified by the cliff, and especially by the lake. This site offering a single echo provides both a quality landscape and quality acoustics. For this reason, the site is used for cultural events.

The belvedere looks over the two wild and preserved lakes that span the bottom of the dale. The glaciers that covered the Jura during the last glacial period disappeared around 18,000 years ago. Their weight and movement created depressions of varying depths which, when the glaciers melted, and thanks to glacial moraines, filled with water and formed lakes.

Whilst the forest has always been exploited in the region, fluctuations in the economic and social situation throughout history have shaped the landscape, alternating between thick forests and vast cultivated expanses.  As from the 17th century and up until the 20th century, an increase in forest exploitation (with wood serving as fuel for economic activities such as blacksmiths) led peasants to use peat as fuel for their domestic use.

The rural house was first the one belonging to the farmer and livestock breed, where men and animals lived together. As from the 18th century, cheese specialisation and the pooling of milk in cooperative structures - “fruitières” - brought farmers out of a self-subsistence economy. In terms of buildings, the farm became bigger: a storey is added to include bedrooms, a second stable is sometimes built to accommodate more animals.

More than a place of work or a rudimentary shelter for craftsmen, for those who occupied it, the workshop is a setting that is both intimate and public. Between the tools used, on the worktops where sawdust is pushed away with the palm of a hand, is where craftsmen build their know-how, by the light shed by the large dusty windows.

The capping on the low dry-stone walls, or crown, maintains and stabilises the sides (visible parts) of the wall. Without it, the stones, and particularly those at the top, would end up falling. Here, you can observe a technique in which large and relatively flat stones, called lauzes, are laid vertically and often stabilised by spacers in between.

The chamois’ coat varies with the seasons; in winter, its fleece takes on a dark brown to black tint, which allows it to absorb heat; whilst in summer, its coat is beige or light brown. But it’s not only its colour that changes! In winter, its coat becomes thicker in order to protect it from the cold, and it can reach up to 10 to 12 cm thick, compared with only 3 to 4 cm thick in the summer, after it has moulted.

Thin soil, good sun exposure, low water-retention capacities and the almost complete absence of soil additives. Yet, dry grasslands are full of biodiversity: Mountain germander, Breckland thyme, laserwort and the military orchid are just some of the flower species that you may glimpse if you take the time to look. But please only use your eyes; over a quarter of protected species in France are from this environment. Drylands are disappearing due to the expansion of bushlands, caused by the abandonment of these lands that are more difficult to farm.

Peat bogs are characterised by a surface that is constantly water-logged, where peat forms and accumulates: it is a type of bedding made-up of dead vegetation which has badly decomposed due to the absence of oxygen. Life conditions are demanding in these environments and this means that the species that live here must adapt to the omnipresence of water, to a relatively cold climate and to the chemical composition of the soil.

The rooms are close to sanitary facilities equipped with washbasins and individual showers. The ESF can accompany you on mid-mountain hikes, ski tours, bike rides and snowshoe treks. The residence also caters for individuals, with overnight stays for hikers in the Dombes building.

Valérie and Marie-Flore warmly welcome you to their friendly gîte, ideal for a pleasant, relaxed stay. Stay in a 19th century building, located in a ski resort and at the heart of the Jura mountain range, offering a wide range of outdoor activities in summer and winter. Whether for one night or a longer stay, alone or with friends, you'll enjoy an exceptional natural setting. Every evening, Valérie proposes a menu based on local produce and specialities from elsewhere, with starter, main course and dessert, booked before 12 noon.

In the heart of the Haute chaîne du Jura, the La Loge refuge welcomes you to an exceptional site! A summer and winter guarded mountain hut at 1436 m altitude, situated on the GR9 and close to the Lélex-Crozet ski area, enjoy an overnight stay, a break or a tasty meal during your getaway to the Crêt de la Neige, hosted by Cathy & Franck. Not far from the Haute Chaîne du Jura Nature Reserve, please respect its regulations.
