Hiking around this lake is the Grande Randonnée de Pays of 82km, do able over 2 – 4 days on foot and it will enable you to discover all the attractions of this magnificent huge lake: the giant potholes in Pont de Poitte, the bridge of la Pyle, the dam wall, the beaches of Surchauffant, Bellecin and la Mercantine, etc. It is also possible to do this circuit by mountain bike.

The village and castle of Verges, the combe of Ain, the site and village of Chatillon, the former railway tunnel ... This trail offers a natural walk in the heart of the forest of Heute. At the foot of the coast is the village of Verges and its castle dating from the 16th century

With its path through the forest, this lake is one of the most charming walks in the Jura. This glacial lake, nestled at the foot of a magnificent rocky outcrop is a paradise of flowers and birds. Enjoy our nature at its best, breathe in the beauty and simplicity of this spot.

At the foot of long wooded cliffs, where herds of chamois like to hide, the two romantic lakes of Étival can be found, remnants of the glaciers that used to cover and plane the Jura during the Quaternary. From ETIVAL – THE LAKES, follow the road (yellow waymarking) that cuts between the two Lakes to reach The top of the Lakes. Continue to the right, heading past and along the Great Lake (peat bogs south of the lake) to join up with a forest path at the A Tout Fromant crossroads. To the left, the forest path will lead you to the Chemin du Calvaire (waterfalls). Then climb up the path to your left, that leads to the ridge at La Sea.  The path continues along the wooded ridge to the left, from which you can make out the discrete lake of la Fauge to the right in its combe. Head to L’Espinois, on the edge of the forest road. Head back up the ridge to the left and follow the gravel trail. Using this trail, join up with the road (a steep descent on a narrow trail through the trees) and reach the BELVEDERE OF THE ETIVAL LAKES. Follow the forest path to the north, leading to Sur les Lacs. Continuing in the same direction, gradually head down through the forest (the path is muddy in some areas) to reach the D 308 in Champs Gadout. Take the road to the left for 200 m, then branch off to the left and follow along the forest edge (wet path) before following along the bank of the small Etival lake and returning to your starting point.

7.4 km there and back, Elevation +255 m 3 hours to see all of the waterfalls

This trail will take you to discover Lake Chambly and Val. A preserved environment that makes it a place to relax, even if swimming is prohibited. Then you will go back on the plateau or succeed the meadows.

Despite the rise to Fontenu, no real difficulty on this circuit which offer you pretty view on the lake and on villages like Fontenu and Marigny.

The telecombi is a teleport with seats and cabins. The Télécombi du Mont Rond, coming from the Col de la Faucille, allows you to access the crests of the Haute Chaîne du Jura; it lifts you from 1323m to 1543m altitude. Once there, the hiker is only 30mn walk away to reach the Grand Mont Rond (1596m), and 2h for the Colomby de Gex (1689m). 2 blue pistes for all mountain biking are marked from the top of the télécombi. In winter, it allows snowshoe enthusiasts to reach the summits with ease and to enjoy the ridges. Please respect the regulations set up by the Natural Reserve of the Jura Range.

La Forestière is a UCI MTB, Cyclo, Kids and Enduro event. It attracts over 3,500 participants, and its reputation attracts the world's best riders as well as mountain bikers from all over France and abroad. The Monts Jura offers the ideal altitude for hiking between 900 and 1723 m. There are marked and maintained trails waiting for you. Since Lélex, the gondola lift La Catheline brings you to the crests of the Haute Chaîne du Jura; climbing from 900m to 1450m altitude. When you get there, you are only an hour and a half walk away from the Crêt de la Neige (172 3m), the highest point in the Jura. At Lélex and Crozet, both gondolas are equipped for MTB riding in summer. Both the Catheline and the Fierney allow mountain bikers to go back up easily and quickly in order to better enjoy the descent on both sides of the mountain! Please note: electric mountain bikes are not allowed in the Catheline gondola. It enables snowshoe enthusiasts to reach the summits easily and enjoy the crests in winter. This "model factory" made available workshops to workers in which they benifited from energy needs to their production in celluloÏd. The building trade had, at this time, innovator architecture and conception. The Great Steam, classified as Ancient Memorial since 1987 and certified heritage from the 20th century, was built in 1905 on the Auguste Chanard architect's plans. This is a model factory with innovatory architecture for the work of celluloid, plastic particularly inflammable. The building trade, a V open-shaped, is composed of two wings divided in two floors of partitioned studios which were rented to craftsmen. Each studio worked on electricity(thanks to hydroelectric energy) and had got fire-fighting system from outside : The Sprinklage system. Work surface was ringed by irrigation channel in which the craftsman threw out caught fire objects. The Great Steam was for his sleeping partner - The Electric Union (private society) a display which should serve the conquest of electric energy's distribution's market in several departments. It was exploited until 1967.

This large and tall feline is elegant and mysterious. Its coat varies from beige to red with black spots, its head is round, and its ears are decorated by wisps of black fur. If all else fails, its short black tail leaves no margin for error should you have the luck of seeing this creature on one of its stops. The Eurasian lynx is capable of reaching speeds of 60 km/h when running!

All sounds can be found in nature. In these limestone reliefs, the tiniest vibration rings out: here acoustic sites are common, so open your ears to hear the surprising concerto offered by the Jura’s landscapes. Any sounds made in this pretty combe are amplified by the cliff, and especially by the lake. This site offering a single echo provides both a quality landscape and quality acoustics. For this reason, the site is used for cultural events.

The belvedere looks over the two wild and preserved lakes that span the bottom of the dale. The glaciers that covered the Jura during the last glacial period disappeared around 18,000 years ago. Their weight and movement created depressions of varying depths which, when the glaciers melted, and thanks to glacial moraines, filled with water and formed lakes.

Whilst the forest has always been exploited in the region, fluctuations in the economic and social situation throughout history have shaped the landscape, alternating between thick forests and vast cultivated expanses.  As from the 17th century and up until the 20th century, an increase in forest exploitation (with wood serving as fuel for economic activities such as blacksmiths) led peasants to use peat as fuel for their domestic use.

Thin soil, good sun exposure, low water-retention capacities and the almost complete absence of soil additives. Yet, dry grasslands are full of biodiversity: Mountain germander, Breckland thyme, laserwort and the military orchid are just some of the flower species that you may glimpse if you take the time to look. But please only use your eyes; over a quarter of protected species in France are from this environment. Drylands are disappearing due to the expansion of bushlands, caused by the abandonment of these lands that are more difficult to farm.

The rural house was first the one belonging to the farmer and livestock breed, where men and animals lived together. As from the 18th century, cheese specialisation and the pooling of milk in cooperative structures - “fruitières” - brought farmers out of a self-subsistence economy. In terms of buildings, the farm became bigger: a storey is added to include bedrooms, a second stable is sometimes built to accommodate more animals.

More than a place of work or a rudimentary shelter for craftsmen, for those who occupied it, the workshop is a setting that is both intimate and public. Between the tools used, on the worktops where sawdust is pushed away with the palm of a hand, is where craftsmen build their know-how, by the light shed by the large dusty windows.

The capping on the low dry-stone walls, or crown, maintains and stabilises the sides (visible parts) of the wall. Without it, the stones, and particularly those at the top, would end up falling. Here, you can observe a technique in which large and relatively flat stones, called lauzes, are laid vertically and often stabilised by spacers in between.

The chamois’ coat varies with the seasons; in winter, its fleece takes on a dark brown to black tint, which allows it to absorb heat; whilst in summer, its coat is beige or light brown. But it’s not only its colour that changes! In winter, its coat becomes thicker in order to protect it from the cold, and it can reach up to 10 to 12 cm thick, compared with only 3 to 4 cm thick in the summer, after it has moulted.

The black woodpecker, with a red crown, is the largest woodpecker in Europe and is roughly the size of a carrion crow, which is also black. In spring, it is easily recognisable due to the loud “kree-kree-kree” call that it makes whilst in flight. It chips large oval nesting chambers into trees, often beech trees, which can then be used by the boreal owl the following year.
