Hike to the ancient Castelviel Oppidum, on the heights of Aiguèze

The Via Rhôna, from Lapalud to Caderousse, is a temporary signposted route in southern Lapalud on the left bank towards Vaucluse. The itinerary winds across the agricultural plain as far as the Canal de Donzère then continues onwards to the foot of the Fortress of Mornas and on to Piolenc. From Li Piboulo lake, you have two options. Continue towards Caderousse along the greenway bordering the Rhone. Join the Roman town of Orange and its famous triumphal arch. About 3.8 km from Lapalud is Girardes lake, where you can go swimming or choose from a variety of water and leisure activities. Make your way gently to the Provençal village of Caderousse surrounded by dykes protecting it from the unpredictable Rhone.

The Via Rhôna is a Eurovéloroute that links Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean and crosses the Vaucluse over approximately 72 km, divided into 2 stages: stage 17: Lapalud - Caderousse/Orange stage 18: Orange - Avignon

The distance for cycling around the Massif d'Uchaux is between 16 and 42 km.

In a setting with oak trees mainly predominating, the hiking trail leads up to the highest point of the Serre mountain, at an altitude of 549 metres, providing some truly exceptional views.

Leave the small village of Caderousse by a temporary Via Rhôna trail that leads to the peaks of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards before entering Avignon." The route climbs up around 1 km and crosses through hillside vineyards affording beautiful views over the Rhone Valley. After Sorgues and as far as Pontet, the 3.5-km route through industrial and commercial areas demands more vigilance until the greenway running along the canals, at the entrance to Avignon, a stunning way in to the former City of the Popes. If you have children in tow, it may be easier to take the train from Sorgues or Orange to Avignon.

A 3-hour, partially signposted ride from either Orange or Caderousse. If you want to cycle in peace and quiet, at the heart of nature and in the shade, follow the “Green Island” trail. From the town centre, encircled by its imposing embankment, and where you can admire a historic heritage, you will set off along the River Rhone and its canals, and then along a greenway, guaranteeing perfect safety and tranquility. "The most beautiful wall in my kingdom", said Louis XIV. The audioguided tour will take you back through the history of the monument, as well as the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire, which traces the history of Orange from antiquity to the 20th century. Built at the beginning of the Christian era, it owes its reputation to the remarkable preservation of its stage wall. The Theatre features all the components of the Latin Theatre according to Vitruvius: the cavea (hemicyclic seating), the side entrances and the stage wall flanked by parascenia. Designed to accommodate Gallo-Roman audiences, this was the place to spread Roman culture and language. 9,000 spectators could attend tragedies and comedies, as well as dance, acrobatics and juggling shows. Come and push open the door of the Mornas fortress. A host of ladies and lords will tell you all about the customs and traditions of the Middle Ages in an original, entertaining and interactive way! The Fortress of Mornas Queen of the Rhône Valley, Proudly set atop a 137-metre-high cliff, the Fortress of Mornas was originally a bastion of military defense. Occupied since ancient times, the site reveals its history from its origins to its desertion after the Wars of Religion. Today, you can immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages, as you stroll through these 12th-century walls. In the heart of the fortress, you'll find some of the finest buildings in the fortress. Here you'll find the attic, the fortress's salt vault, the treasure of Mornas. The fortress is open from Easter to October 31. It can be visited either : - An animated visit: lasting around 1h15, this is an immersion medieval history. Suitable for the whole family - The self-guided tour: allows you to discover the fortress at your own pace, with documentation detailing all the important points of the site given to you on arrival, and explanatory panels along the way. Access to the fortress is on foot, via montée de la Combe and montée André Caillet. Estimated time: 30 minutes. Tables and benches are available along the way. The fortress has no water or toilet facilities. Toilets are available on the Val Romigier esplanade. The fortress does not sell drinks, so please bring your own water bottle. Le Montgrillet is the hillock above the village. The population of Meyrannes used to be overwhelmingly farmers, who lived on what they grew. Le Montgrillet is exposed to the sun and close to the village, and was the ideal spot for farming. Evidence for this can be seen all along the path. The grove of olive trees above the path indicates one of the crops once grown in Meyrannes, along with grapes and mulberry trees (for leaves to feed to silkworms). (B. Mathieu)  

This structure was built using dry-stoning techniques (i.e. without binder) and was once used by the farmer to store his harvest, tidy away his tools or take shelter when a storm about to burst did not leave him enough time to return home. The builder chose to make his hut back onto a terrace, so as to economise on one wall and save space. On this sloping land, efficiency is of the essence: the farmer has to make the most of every cultivatable square metre. Terrace walls built from stones serve to create horizontal plots, remove stones from the land and prevent erosion. (B. Mathieu)
