This walk offers you a striking perspective onto the Vallée Borgne. Views stretch from the ocean to Mont Lozère and, on a clear day, perhaps even to the pre-Alps. Start at the Col de l'Asclier pass. After the sheep bridge, take the forest track on the right towards La Cale (GR 61/67). Go past a stele and, at the signpost for La Cale, leave the GR 61 to take a path on the right to the foot of the Rocher de l'Aigle rock (optional there-and-back to the summit). Go downhill to the Col de Fageas (be careful on the scree) and return to the Col de l'Asclier on the GR6B.

This walk winds through the lowest foothills of the Cevennes, where the limestone of the piedmont plain meets the granite slopes of Mont Liron. From the car park, head towards La Pierre Plantée / Mairie de Soudorgues via Les Quatre Chemins. Pass the mairie and then the temple (Protestant church). At the crossroads, turn left towards Col de Cabane Vieille / La Pierre Plantée. At the fork, continue towards Col de Cabane Vieille / Le Four à Chaux. The road leads to a hairpin bend. At the apex of the bend, a small path leads you to the lime kiln (do not enter the walled-in area – the site is dangerous). Take the GR63 long-distance hiking path on your left for about a hundred metres, then take the path on the right, which crosses to the other slope further on, to the rocks signposted Col du Mercou / Sous le Mauripe. Shortly afterwards, a signpost points left into the rocks Col du Mercou / Serre des Ubacs. This is where you start your climb to the summit of Mauripe. The path switches back and forth between the Salindrenque side and the Mercou side. At the top, take the path that winds left, then curves to the right. The descent, which is rather steep, leads to the Serre des Ubacs in a few minutes. Turn right towards Col du Mercou / Mercou. The path on which you return to Soudorgues / Les Quatre Chemins, forks off to the right towards Le Moina. Head back to the car park by following "Soudorgues / Mairie de Soudorgues".

Discover an eco-museum in an old mill, with a fun exhibition for everyone. Children and adults alike can take an indoor and outdoor tour to learn more about this important part of our daily lives! In the heart of the Vallée Borgne, in the village's old mill, the Maison de l'Eau has naturally found its place. Around this witness to the past, a modern and entertaining exhibition presents water in the Cévennes. Mister Beaver, the mascot, invites young and old to a more unusual visit, combining questions, games and experiments... An interpretive trail completes the visit with a presentation of some of the tree species native to the Cévennes. This is a fun walk for the whole family, during which you'll come face-to-face with the birds that pass between forest and river. Equipped with a pair of binoculars, you can follow the signposted path to learn how to observe and recognize birds (also downloadable from our website). In addition to visits, the Maison de l'Eau also offers environmental education sessions for schoolchildren, leisure centers and the general public, as well as nature outings (on the trail of the beaver, the otter, the little people of the water...), walks, visits to the village... It is located along the river and has its own private beach. The establishment located at the edge of the Cevennes National Park offers a wide range of activities for the whole family. It has a direct access to the river with a private beach, an aquatic complex of more than 600m² with a swimming pool of 250 m², a heated swimming pool with 4 slides including a kamikaze, an aqualudic space of 250 m² for the youngest with many water games and a new slide with sensation, the Tobbo-jump of 11m high. As for other activities, you will find a multi-sports field, an 18-hole mini golf course, a fitness area, a bowling alley with 12 courts, a games library and a children's playground accessible from the opening of the campsite. Activities for children from 3 to 5 years old and 6 to 10 years old, for teenagers from 11 to 14 years old and 15 to 18 years old as well as sports and leisure activities and big family games are organized in July and August, 6 days a week in our air-conditioned yurt. Estréchure is the first "village-street" of the Borgne Valley which offers passers-by its houses contiguous on both sides of the typical road in Cevennes country. Come and drink at the fountain! the water is so fresh!

Between Saumane and St André de Valborgne, the Gorges de Capoue were carved out by the river. This little bathing spot is ideal for relaxing on the rocks and enjoying the natural pools formed by the river. A place for young and old alike! Please note that swimming is not supervised! Respect the environment : When you enjoy river swimming, make sure you respect the natural environment. Don't leave garbage behind, and avoid disturbing the local flora and fauna.

Come in spring – up to the end of April – to see the rush-leaf narcissi opposite the Rocher de l'Aigle. They grow in abundance on the limited surface area of the sheltered and south-facing stony slope. Often there is only one fragrant flower per plant. Do not pick them! Take a photo instead!

On the first two kilometres, up to the Rocher de l'Aigle, you are on the forestry track opened in 1938. Where there are forestry tracks, there are state-owned forests, meaning forests managed by the French state and the Office National des Forêts so as to develop the area. The presence of so many beech trees and pines is a marker of the previous reforestation policy on the Aigoual massif and in the Cevenol foothills. A plaque has been erected at the Col du Fageas pass, further along this trail, in memory of Max Nègre (1880 – 1960), one of the project managers of this collective undertaking. From 1935 to 1939, he thinned out the forests planted since the end of the 19th century and opened up forestry tracks.

Enjoy a superb 360° view! On the northern horizon, you can see the summit of Mont Aigoual and, on the valley floor, the hamlets of Les Millerines and L'Abric in the foreground and a part of the districts of L'Estréchure and Saumane in the middle distance. Further north, the village of St-Roman-de-Tousque is perched on the long corniche of the Cévennes. To the east, you can make out the city of Alès, Mont Bouquet and, in the distance, the “giant of Provence”, Mont Ventoux (1,912 m). On the southern horizon are two limestone hills: the Jumelles de Monoblet. Behind them, Coutach hill overlooks Sauve and Quissiac. The Pic Saint-Loup rises above it all with its 658 m. You can also see a stretch of coastline, with the salt marshes of Aigues-Mortes and La Grande-Motte just visible. Further west, the Roc Blanc rises next to the Pic d'Anjeau. And finally, just opposite you, Mont Fageas, the summit of the Liron range, on which you have been walking west-to-east for an hour already.

The governmental research organisation CNRS has installed a hydrometric station here that measures the stream's water levels and flow rate. You can easily see the graduated vertical scale. This is complemented by a pressure probe connected to a data recording centre. This monitoring equipment is part of a series of stations in the Vallée Borgne. The data they record have shown the important role played by tancats (cf. Precious reserves) in regulating water flow. They also confirm how effective the various measures are that have been taken to rehabilitate these structures and maintain riverbank vegetation.

Besals or béals are channels that have been built to carry and distribute water where it is needed: plots of cultivated land, gardens, mills, etc. They were usually created and maintained collectively. The distribution of water to the various users was controlled by small sluice gates (esclafidors).  These were opened and closed at precise times of day, which were decided according to customary law – and could be subject to disputes and legal proceedings.

To store water, especially during dry periods, locals have dug and built a great number of gorgas. These reservoirs supplied gardens, fields and mills. They were fed by springs or streams, whose water was diverted by a paissièira and then transported by a besal (béal).
