Le Vigan - Col du Minier - L'Espérou - Mont Aigoual - L'Espérou - Valleraugue - Le Vigan The ascent to the top of the Gard via the Col du Minier (D48) is gentle and steady, and presents no particular difficulties. A short respite after the Col du Minier allows you to get back into the swing of things as far as L'Espérou and begin the climb to the Col de la Serreyrède and the Mont Aigoual observatory, which culminates at 1,567m. From up there, straddling the Gard and Aveyron departments, when the sky is clear you can see 1/4 of France, from the Alps to the Pyrenees (always bring warm clothing when climbing the Aigoual). You can eat here for part of the year. The return journey, after crossing l'Espérou, begins with a descent through the hairpin bends leading to Valleraugue. You'll then follow the Hérault down to Pont d'Hérault, before taking the D999 to Le Vigan. Electric bike recharging station in the observatory parking lot (bring your own cable).

Le Vigan - Pont d'Hérault - Valleraugue - L'Espérou - Mt Aigoual - L'Espérou - Col de Minier - Le Vigan Climb to the summit of Aigoual via the Valleraugue valley. The road (D999) descends slightly to the Pont d'Hérault junction, then rises slightly to Valleraugue (D986). As you climb back up along the Hérault, you can see the Aigoual massif in the distance, and you can guess that at some point you're going to have to climb those 1200m+ to reach the summit of the Gard, which rises to 1567 m. Things get serious after passing through the village of Valleraugue, more precisely after La Pénarié, with a succession of hairpin bends up to L'Espérou (average 5%). The subsequent climb to the Col de la Serreyrède and the Mont Aigoual observatory is gentler. From up there, don't hesitate to admire the view over ¼ of France (on a clear day), from the Alps to the Pyrenees (beware of weather conditions when climbing the Aigoual). You can eat at the summit, with one foot in Lozère and the other in Gard. The return journey to Le Vigan via l'Espérou is a steady one, with just a small false flat rise before the Col du Minier. From l'Espérou, you can take the route des cascades d'Orgon down to the Col de la Broue (beware of the narrow road and reduced visibility). Le Vigan - Mandagout - Col de la Lusette - L'Espérou - Aigoual - L'Espérou - Valleraugue - Le Vigan Well-known and feared by the region's racers, the ascent to the summit of Mont Aigoual via the Col de la Lusette has all the makings of becoming mythical, especially since the passage of the 2020 Tour de France. The climb begins gently up to the Col des Mourèzes (D170). After Mandagout, on the D329 and especially in the last hairpin bends before Cap de Coste, you'll have to grit your teeth as the gradient rises to 15% before easing off to the Col de la Luzette. But when the weather's fine, you'll be rewarded for your effort with a breathtaking view: beyond the Pic st Loup, the entire Mediterranean coast. From the Col de la Lusette, you can continue on to L'Espérou and begin the gentler ascent to the Mont Aigoual observatory, the highest peak in the Gard region, at 1567 m. From there, when the sky is clear, you can see ? of France, from the Alps to the Pyrenees (but always bring warm clothing when climbing to Aigoual). Catering available. Le Vigan - Alzon - Blandas - Navacelles - St Maurice de Navacelles - Madières -Rogues - Mondardier- Le Vigan You're about to cross one of the most beautiful natural sites in France! You can get your feet wet on a relatively busy road (the D999) for around 16 km - a false flat rising profile - before joining the causse on the D158 and discovering a completely different landscape, a succession of hills amidst limestone rock, all the way to the village of Blandas. After less than 2 kms, the majestic cirque of Navacelles and the meandering Vis river come into view. Tight bends take you all the way to the bottom of the cirque, down to the level of the Vis, before winding your way up to the other side of the Causse, on the Hérault side, where the last few bends are likely to make you stick out your tongue. The road through the Vis gorges between St Maurice de Navacelles and Madières is a real beauty! The straighter D48S takes you to Montdardier and its imposing castle, before descending the winding road to Le Vigan, with its backdrop of the Aigoual massif and the Cevennes mountains. From Le Vigan, climb the Causse via Avèze and Montdardier on the D48s, then on to Blandas (D113) and Vissec. Taking the D113b, you enter the Hérault département towards Sorbs and its château, then Le Cros and Le Caylar (see the sculpted tree in the square). Take the D609 towards La Couvertoirade (Aveyron), which you'll leave on your right (if you have time, visit this fortified Templar village). At the crossroads with the D7, turn right towards Sauclières and the Col de la Barrière, where you pass back into the Gard - take the D270 on your right towards Campestre, then the D489 down to Alzon. The D999 takes you back to La Vigan (note that the D158c, which avoids the tunnel, is closed to bikes), ending at Arre and Pont Eiffel on a voie verte.

Take the D999 towards Ganges, for around 6 km, as far as Le Rey, where you turn onto the D329 towards l'Arboux, then Costubague, Mandagout, St André de Majencoules, before rejoining the D986 and rejoining the D999 at Pont d'Hérault, where you head back towards Ganges. At the junction with the road to Sumène (D20), don't be taken by surprise and change gear before turning, as it climbs to Cap de Coste before descending to Sumène, which you cross to continue along the meandering river to St Martial, then the Col de la Tribale. From here it's downhill to Notre-Dame-de-la Rouvière, then up again to Ardaillès, and after Le Gasquet cross the D986 to the Taleyrac valley. In spring, the terraced fields of Cévennes sweet onions can be seen on both sides of the road as far as Taleyrac (D323). The winding road climbs steeply (up to 11%) to the Col des vieilles (782m), the highest point on this route, before descending to Le Vigan via Mandagout and the Col des Mourèzes.

Discover an eco-museum in an old mill, with a fun exhibition for everyone. Children and adults alike can take an indoor and outdoor tour to learn more about this important part of our daily lives! In the heart of the Vallée Borgne, in the village's old mill, the Maison de l'Eau has naturally found its place. Around this witness to the past, a modern and entertaining exhibition presents water in the Cévennes. Mister Beaver, the mascot, invites young and old to a more unusual visit, combining questions, games and experiments... An interpretive trail completes the visit with a presentation of some of the tree species native to the Cévennes. This is a fun walk for the whole family, during which you'll come face-to-face with the birds that pass between forest and river. Equipped with a pair of binoculars, you can follow the signposted path to learn how to observe and recognize birds (also downloadable from our website). In addition to visits, the Maison de l'Eau also offers environmental education sessions for schoolchildren, leisure centers and the general public, as well as nature outings (on the trail of the beaver, the otter, the little people of the water...), walks, visits to the village... Come and stroll along the béal, let yourself be lulled by the sound of water on the mill wheels! There are 3 interpretation trails in the Vallée Borgne area, including one on the route of the Maison de l'Eau des Plantiers.

To evoke the site of St Peyre, here is a text by C. Chante, taken from his work Un coin des Cévennes. Le Vigan et ses environs (1933). “All of a sudden, an oak grove appears that surrounds a small clearing where some leftover rocks, laid out in an elongated oval, seem to indicate a cromlech. At one end stands the antique structure, which the centuries have respected and which the Christians never thought to come and destroy on this almost inaccessible escarpment. There can be no doubt about its purpose: it is clearly a Druidic altar, made from granite blocks set out in a semicircle with a gradient, whence the priest must have harangued the faithful before or after the sacrifice (…).”

In the 19th century, the copper mines were the valley's biggest employer. They closed in the early 20th century, bringing about the economic decline of Arrigas. The trays for washing the ore can still be seen alongside the D 189, as you leave the village towards Peyraube. The railway did not bring the hoped-for prosperity since, for technical reasons, no station could be built at Arrigas. To take the train, one had to walk to the neighbouring village of Aumessas. Marker 1The mouflon is a ruminant mammal related to the domestic sheep. Its staple diet is herbaceous plants, which it finds in open spaces such as heaths. It also feeds on about a hundred other plants (ferns, mosses, mushrooms, etc.).The horns of the male (ram) are spiral-shaped and grow continuously, which makes it possible to estimate its age. The female (ewe) rarely has horns. The mouflon's life expectancy is around 14 years. Being an excellent climber, it can easily escape to steep areas in case of danger. These rocky zones also help limit the growth of its hooves through wear.

In his works, André Chamson constructed an imaginary Cévennes park. His writings bear witness to his love for the area and his attachment to his Huguenot ancestors. A nationally renowned writer, he was elected to the Académie française in 1956. His final works see time and death become more powerful than work or human faith.

Marker 6L'Abeuradou is located on a draille, a drovers' road for shepherds and their flocks to move between the plains of Languedoc and summer pastures on the southern Massif Central. The name L'Abeuradou indicates that it is a spot where the flocks drink and rest before continuing their long hike. Today's domestic sheep is descended from the mouflon. Since being introduced to the slopes of Mont Aigoual, the mouflon has thus been rubbing shoulders with its cousin, which grazes here in summer. Their cohabitation does not seem to be a problem for the livestock farmers.

In the arid Causses of Larzac to the north and Blandas to the south, the river Vis has carved out an impressive green furrow, dominated at its heart by a hill. This is the Cirque de Navacelles, a geological curiosity shaped by 600,000 years of patient labor. Straddling the departments of Gard and Hérault, the Vis river has carved out its bed in the limestone of the southern causses (Blandas and Larzac), forming vast meanders. Over time, erosion of the rock has enabled the river to cut its course as short as possible, abandoning its former bed. Thus was born the Cirque de Navacelles. To discover it in its entirety, don't miss the 300m-deep descent to the bottom of the cirque. Here, in a green oasis on the banks of the Vis waterfall, lies the village of Navacelles. A botanical trail, accessible to all, has been laid out here. Today, the cirque de Navacelles is a member of the Grands Sites de France, and boasts over 250,000 visitors a year. Since 2011, it has been nestled in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Causse & Cévennes). The heritage of the Cirque de Navacelles Grand Site The joint work of man and nature, the former has used all its power to sculpt the material and shape the site's geological outlines, while the latter has patiently created the "finishing touches": built islands, roads, bridges and paths, low walls supporting the terraces, all at the cost of laborious work to shape the relief. The Cirque de Navacelles Grand Site boasts a magnificent heritage of archaeology, geomorphology and agropastoralism. Hiking and outdoor activities The Grand Site du Cirque de Navacelles is a territory where nature and heritage reveal themselves to those who take the time to observe, listen and smell... Free walks are a wonderful way to discover the fauna and flora, as well as the heritage: lavognes, pastoral enclosures, old bread ovens... Reference books are available to help you discover them (cartoguide, rando-fiche...). THE BELVEDERES OF BLANDAS Situated just 3 minutes from the village of Blandas, the belvederes offer three breathtaking viewpoints over the Cirque de Navacelles and the Vis gorges. The Maison de Site houses a tourist documentation area, a permanent exhibition on agropastoralism, a film showing archaeological discoveries made on the Causse and in the Cirque de Navacelles, a local produce store and a restaurant serving local produce. The facilities are accessible to the disabled. Since July 2013, the "Chênes", "Doline" and "Cascade" lookouts on the Causse de Blandas offer visitors an overview of the grandiose geomorphology of the Cirque de Navacelles and establish a respectful dialogue between Man and Earth. Located in the Borgne Valley, in the commune of Les Plantiers, our Fontfouillouse gîte welcomes you to an unspoilt valley at the foot of a 12th-century Romanesque church. In the midst of the Cévennes chestnut grove, we have created our group gîte.
