From the Museum of Prehistory, you will walk up to the ridges of Vassieux where you will have a wide panorama on the Diois and the high plateaux of the Vercors.From the But Saint-Genix to the Vassieux pass and from west to east, you can gaze at the vast lawns of Font d'Urle and Ambel where Mesolithic (9,500-5,500 BC) and Neolithic archaeological sites (5 500-2 500 BC) were uncovered.Circuit developed in partnership with Departure from the Museum of Prehistory, direction Col de Vassieux 8. Take the road to Espeline 1, a strategic crossroads where the GR 93 and the Grandes Traversées du Vercors (GTV) intersect. From there, continue south and pass through Fontaine du Lauset 2 then Les Taillis 3. Leave the forest road to enter the forest and climb gradually to Coras 4, temporarily take the forest road again and reach the Fontaine du Plainet 5 and the Plainet crossroads 6. Take the itinerary on the right which leads to the shelter of the pass of Vassieux (unguarded hut open to the public) after about ten minutes. On this walk you will discover the village of Vassieux, which paid a heavy price during the Vercors fighting. You can then climb higher along the path that once linked the village to Resistance camp No. 6 during World War II. This route, which is quite difficult, goes up through the box trees to the Memorial to the Resistance in the Vercors. It’s an effort that is rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. Starting from Vassieux-en-Vercors, head towards the Departmental Museum of the Resistance behind the church in the direction of Les Cheneaux. The bell tower is all that remains of the old building following the bombing raids of 1944. Take the signposted route (GR 95), walk behind Le Piroulet holiday village, then follow the road that crosses the entrance to the hamlet of Moulin Allard on the left. Now walk along the signposted path that climbs up on the left, indicated by an information panel, in the direction of Col de la Chau. The path rises after the old quarry along a steep slope to the Memorial of Resistance in the Vercors. From here you can take the steps that go to Col de la Chau to follow the architecture trail, an outdoor exhibition about the Memorial’s contemporary architecture. You can get even more out of the walk with a visit to the Memorial (put aside two or so hours). The return journey follows the same route towards Vassieux-en-Vercors.

Let yourself be swept away by this landscape shaped by time and the majestic summit of the Grand Veymont. Starting from the village of Vassieux-en-Vercors, make for Les Bourgets, le Château, La Mare and Les Sables. Carry on walking via Sapin d'Aimé, La Mure, Les Chèvres, La Grande Peyrousse, Nécropole and Pourlette, and find your starting point in the village.

This unforgettable hike which passes through the Memorial of the Resistance and tutoi the plateau of Font d'Urle makes you discover the history and the wide spaces of the Vercors. Departure from Vassieux-en-Vercors village, take the direction of Col de la Chau 2. At Les Chenaux 1, climb gradually up to the pass, passing the Memorial de la Résistance. From Col de la Chau, join Prairie de la Chau 3, where you will find the Grande Traversée du Vercors and then the Pot de la Croix 4. To take the GR 93 (white and red markings) to Col de Font Payanne 6, via Les Gagères 5, this part of the itinerary offers several remarkable views on Vassieux and the eastern border of the Vercors . From there, take the direction of Vassieux and descend gradually to reach the crossroads Cerisiers 7, the village is then far away.

Discover the forest environment at the foot of the Hauts plateaux du Vercors. If you are discreet and observant, you may be able to see the local fauna (chamois, deer, deer, eagles ...) Departure of the hamlet-village of Rousset (parking), direction the Rancs of Charles 4.Take the road for some 300 meters to the crossroads of the Pont des Oules 1, continue on this one hundred meters before turning on the left to join a path that advances in laces in the middle of boxwood groves (Not missing in passing a small visit of the Chapel Saint-Alexis). At the Pont des Scies 2, the hike continues for a moment by a wide track before turning abruptly on the left to join the crossroads of the Château d'Eau 3.From there, the trail becomes more "mountainous and steep" (caution in rainy weather) and progresses in laces in a scree before joining the forest road of Béguère at the crossroads Rancs de Charles (point of view). The rest of the route follows the direction of Rousset, the track gradually descends into the undergrowth to reach the crossroads of the Barrière de Béguère 5.Go down to the Mémont 6, then always in the forest, continue until the road that crosses a second time to initiate the final slope leading to the Liottards 7.The return to Rousset is then made by Le Reservoir 8 then the Bridge of the Oules.

The open visit to the Necropolis of Vassieux-en-Vercors serves as an introduction to this easy loop. Here you are invited to remember the battles that took place in July 1944 and the journey taken by members of the Resistance. You now cross the broad plain of Vassieux, where enemy gliders used to land. Set off from the Necropolis car park. Cross the D76 at the gate and follow the signposted path opposite towards La Grande Peyrouse. At the La Grande Peyrouse intersection, continue on towards Pourlette. In Pourlette, an interpretation panel explains the geological formation of the Vercors. Cross the D76 again and take the path opposite that goes across fields and leads to the site of an old water mill, which has been recently redeveloped. Once you are on the path, turn right towards the Necropolis. The trail will take you back to the starting point.

Crest Route with breathtaking scenery From the tunnel carpark (1254m), take the old Roman road which overlooks the Diois, pass under the departure of the Via Ferrata, path in cornice carved in the rock. Then, go under a canopy to quickly reach a snowy valley. Shoot full North for Col de Chironne 1 (1416m). Climb south-west the slight slope leaving on the right the cross-country ski run that runs to Vassieux-en-Vercors. At point 1467m on the IGN map, join the southern edge of the plateau above the Rochers de Chironne. Follow the ridge that runs into the forest (south-west orientation). After about 1h30, reach the But de Aiglette 2 (1524m).Return:The return is identical to the itinerary of the outward journey.

This walk runs alongside the Memorial to the Resistance before leading to the site of one of the Vercors Resistance camps, Camp No. 6, which was set up by Benjamin Malossane in February 1943. The members of the Maquis survived for several months in the Grange de Vauneyre, which was tucked away in a quiet clearing hidden from view by the forest. Here you will be plunged into the day-to-day lives of these men and women who decided to join the underground movement. Setting out from the car park at Col de la Chau, head up the steps that lead to the Mémorial de la Résistance, getting the most out of the trail about the Memorial’s architecture. Now leave the Memorial footbridge on your right and carry on for a couple of minutes before taking the path that rises to the left, signposted by three steps. Cross the D76 (be careful: it’s a busy road) to the information panel on the other side and head in the direction of Grange de Vauneyre. A forest path climbs abruptly until you get to the Grange de Vauneyre meadow, which is where the men from Camp No. 6 were stationed. Take the forest path that goes to the left and walk along it for around 800 m until you arrive in front of a wide forest track. Turn left to go down the track via the GR95 that leads to the D76 in the direction of Col de La Chau. Staying on the same track, walk for a few meters along the secondary (départementale) road and head back to the car park where you started from.

The return can be done by the journey of the way.Here we propose a loop route.Descend from the summit following the crests of the Gagères. Go down slightly under the crests. Reach the Pot de la Croix. Pull on the left (west) following the edge of the plateau and the forest. After a few short descents, you reach the D76B road that follows 300 meters towards the station of Fond D'Urle.On skiing, the return, on this hilly itinerary, takes about 50 minutes.

The southern part of the plateau of Vassieux is a flint-sized zone. The flint-sized workshop where the Museum of Prehistory was set up was discovered in 1970 by Dr. Michel Malenfant. It is then covered with a stone formed over the centuries by the plowing of the farmers. This is what protected and preserved it intact as abandoned by prehistoric men 4,500 years ago. After stripping and excavation, the workshop turns out to be a large blade production site (nearly 30 cm). It was exploited during three centuries, from 2700 to 2400 before J.C by Neolithic artisans-tailors. Tools of flint in Vassieux were found in the center of Germany and on the island of Ré. Farmers, occasional hunters, artisans and traders, these Neolithic men invented pluriactivity, which is still today a component of the economy of the mountain.

Vassieux-en-Vercors is a place of resistance, and remains forever marked by history. Vassieux is one of the 5 towns and villages of France named after the Companions of the Liberation by General de Gaulle. The village paid a heavy tribute to the help brought by its inhabitants to the maquis of the Vercors. In fact, while the maquis were waiting for a parachute of provisions and weapons, it was the Nazis who sprang up in gliders and landed in the plain of Vassieux, on July 21, 1944. The massacre that followed sounded the end Of resistance in the Vercors. In the central square, a commemorative plaque (a martyrologist) honors the names of the inhabitants, 76 women, children and men who lost their lives on the 430 inhabitants of the village. The Memorial of the Resistance invites us to reflection and to remember. But Vassieux also retains the traces of an earlier history: that of prehistoric men, using an important deposit of flint, evoked by the Museum of Prehistory.

The church of Vassieux-en-Vercors was not spared during the bombing raids of World War II, and the bell tower is all that remains of the old building. The new church adjoining the bell tower (the only preserved edifice) was designed by the architect Pierre Myassard. The choir was reoriented to the west during the rebuilding work, and the decorative style was executed by the painters Aujame, Humblot and Borgès, the Grenoble glassmaker Montfallet and the sculptor Emile Gilioli. The painting of the choir was replaced by an altarpiece by the artist Carmelo Zagari; two stained-glass windows and the altar were designed by Jean-Marc-Cérino. The altar, which is made from Tavel stone, houses the relics of Edith Stein, a German Jew who became a Carmelite and died while being deported to Auschwitz in 1942.

The museum, which was founded by an old member of the Resistance, was renovated in its entirety in 2010. The museum tour is dotted with rich collections, connecting the revived history of the maquis and the rebuilding with the first-hand accounts of its founder. The tour is interspersed with a lavish collection of objects from the period and tactile terminals, and is structured around three themes: The Vercors before the Vercors, which presents the local and international context from 1918 to 1942; The Vercors Maquis, which contextualises the history of the Maquis from late 1942 to August 1944; and The Vercors after the Vercors, which details the post-war period, the reconstruction of the Vercors, commemorations and memorial buildings.

At the crossroads of Bourget, turn to see on the horizon the two ruined towers of the hamlet of La Mure. These are two old windmills. Vassieux had 8 in all. The last one stopped grinding in 1878. It must be said that this vast plateau open to the north and south is particularly windy (you may have realized if you forgot your little wool!). The mills of Vassieux are the only ones known in the Alps.

At the Oules bridge, upstream of the hamlet of Rousset, height seriously injured people treated at the maquis refugee hospital in Luire were killed after being forced to dig their graves. The youngest, René Bourgond is 17 years old. He is a worker, originally from Romans.

Property for a small part of the commune of Vassieux en Vercors, for the most part the department of Drôme since 1954, the departmental domain of Font d'Urle is a sensitive natural space. Its vocation is the protection of nature and the reception of the public. Some rules of common sense make it possible to protect this space as well as to cohabit in good understanding with the shepherds and their flocks. Picking flowers that are particularly spectacular in May and June is prohibited. Dogs, even on a leash, are prohibited during the summer season (May to October). In the middle of the mountain pastures, there are herds of horses in semi-freedom. In this vast steppe of altitude, stretch of grass and rocks "with for all border the sky" (Joseph Kessel), one would think oneself in Mongolia.

It is an enclave of the commune of Chamaloc located at the foot of the road of the pass of Rousset on the plateau of Vercors. Pastoral tradition of the south of France, the transhumance of the sheep is registered in the agricultural practices for more than 1000 years. Each commune of piedmont has always sought to have alpine pastures on the surrounding mountains. A pastoral grouping, allows several breeders of the villages below, associated with colleagues of Alpes de Haute Provence, to finance a shepherd and the equipment necessary to the sheep of a herd of sheep: access track, catchment of sources , Water reservoir and sheepfold. The plateau of Vassieux-en-Vercors is an open landscape characteristic of the karstic plateaus, the surface water is almost non-existent and the soils are not thick. However, dolines, which are depressions where the clay accumulates, thus allowing the cultivation of cereals, alongside these dolines, the stones are heaped up. There used to be many windmills to grind grain.

After the village of Vassieux, you can discover the Necropolis, where all the civilian and military victims of the events in Vassieux lie buried. In addition to the people of the village, the graves show us that the Resistance in the Vercors was a huge civil and military movement that brought together men and women of many different nationalities. On the stone slabs can be read the names of Russian, Polish, Algerian, English and American soldiers and members of the Maquis. The shells of two of the gliders the German soldiers landed are on display beyond the graveyard. The shelter of the pass of Vassieux is an unguarded shelter built in 1976 and restored in 2014-2015 by the Regional Natural Park of Vercors.With a maximum capacity of 15 people, it is open all year and free of access. However, as with most shelter huts in the territory, certain rules must be respected if the service is to last for a long time (most of them are recalled to you inside the shelter).

At the crossroads of several important trails, the Cabin de Pre Peyret is one of the most frequented of the massif. Located at the entrance of the high plateaus at 1600 m, this unguarded stone hut can accommodate 10 people for the night. It has a stove.The place exudes an old tradition of welcome because it is an old cabaret where those who were penniless went to drink at the Fountain of the Endettés, which bears his name well.

A short distance from the Hauts-plateaux at 1540 m, the shelter of the Pison is a shack in sheet metal, able to accomodate 6 people. It has a stove.

The cabin of the Aiguillettes is a former shepherd's hut dating back to the time when the pastoral units were smaller. This hut, open to the public, accommodates only 4 people by tightening a little and does not have a stove.

Would you like to camp in a unique setting, just a 15-minute walk from Die's historic center? La ferme de l'Oadie welcomes you to its 3 hectares facing the magnificent Glandasse mountains. The Meyrosse river, a tributary of the Drôme, runs 200m below us, as does the pathway leading to the long-distance hiking trails. The farm is part of the "fermes paysannes et sauvages" network. It is run on a permaculture/livestock farm based on the principles of principles. Farm products are sold on site (eggs from our 250 hens in an innovative mobile henhouse, berries, wild and cultivated fruit jams, chicken terrines and rillettes). Our Shagya mares and foals will be delighted to welcome you. Some are available for sale. On request, we can offer day-long horseback rides, reserved exclusively for 2 or 3 riders of galop level 7 and above.
