After the destruction of the medieval ramparts in the mid-19th century, the town expanded northwards. A new district emerged, located between the historic center and the train station. The local economy undergoes new developments with the installation of shoe manufacturing workshops. The need for labor led to a sharp rise in population, from 10,000 in 1850 to 20,000 in 1940 and 30,000 in 1968. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Romans was also a garrison town, housing several barracks. Today's city center gradually took on the face we know today. La Martinette is a small canal which runs quietly through the town. It provides a pleasant walkway where one can forget the sound of vehicles and admire the flora and fauna of the waterway The course of the river, still visible along Place de la Presle, gives visitors a glimpse of Romans' rich industrial past. Further upstream, in the heart of the city, you can follow a rural itinerary along the banks of the canal (with its many plant and animal species). The canal and its surroundings are home to numerous plant species, such as the groenlanda densa, and animal species, such as the newt, the frog and the leech, which live only in waters that are not very polluted. Their presence testifies to the good quality of the Martinette's waters. The historic town center boasts an original and diverse medieval and Renaissance heritage. The social organization of the town at that time is clearly visible. To the south and north, the bell towers of the collegiate church of Saint Barnard and the Jacquemart tower symbolize the long-standing conflicts between the religious power of the canons and the secular power of the town's consuls, established in 1366. Alongside the Hôtel de Clérieu, a fortified house of ancient origin, the bourgeoisie, enriched by the wool trade, built imposing townhouses. Today, most of these are privately owned and can only be visited on guided tours. Finally, the old streets reveal architectural details that bear witness to the city's development from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. This pleasant hike offers a magnificent panorama of Saint-Nazaire-en-Royans, the Vercors and the plain of the Royans from the viewpoint of the Belvedere. Depart from Saint-Nazaire-en-Royans near the Tourist Office/Aqueduct – Espace Royans Vercors (car park). Head towards the Belvédère (panoramic viewpoint) and go along the banks of the Bourne for a moment to find the Four à Chaux crossroads before crossing the main road (caution) to eventually reach the La Châtaigne crossroads. The path then steadily goes up through the undergrowth to La Madelanière, Vanille, and Le Belvédère is close by. After admiring the exceptional scenery, return to Saint-Nazaire-en-Royans allong La Cote 457 mètres, before beginning the descent through the deciduous forest to Tire-Vire. Carry on towards Saint-Nazaire along a varied and pleasant path to reach the Chemin de la Draye crossroads, then follow the yellow and green markers to the car park, the starting point of this wonderful hike.

The Shoe Museum invites you on a journey to discover the world of this timeless, universal object: the shoe. Situated in Romans, a town that owes its renown to leatherworking and shoemaking. The cells, once occupied by the Visitandine nuns, are now the setting for a collection of shoes from their origins to the present day: from unusual pairs from the 4 corners of the world to contemporary designers. All forms of footwear are on display, from the oldest to the most contemporary, from the most classic to the most extravagant and the most exotic, not forgetting the creations of famous bootmakers past and present. Musketeer boots, Chinese women's ankle boots for mutilated feet, medieval poulaines... 16,500 collector's items from antiquity to the present day, representing 4,000 years of history, are displayed in rotation in the cells once occupied by the Visitation nuns. The tower is the sole remaining part of an 11th century feudal castle destroyed during the wars of religion. The tower can be easily accessed during a pleasant walk. There remains a long wall which was part of the castle walls. This catholic church is part of the historical heritage of the Northern Drôme. This romanesque Church from the 11th and 12th centuries was built on a hill offering a nice view over the village.It shows a nice architectural unity and old sculpted capitals Discover inside the church a nice black virgin statue.

Few chapels from this era remain intact on their orginal sites but as it was partly sunk into clay and isolated from urban pollution it is relatively well preserved. St Peter's recovers its former elegance 1000 years later, after 8 years of restoration work ending in 2008. Catholic services still take place sometimes in the chapel.

The Gare de Romans was opened in 1864 by the Compagnie Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée to serve the Valence-Moirans line, enabling the town to develop economically. Opposite the station is a neighborhood built in the 19th century by the Roman bourgeoisie, enriched by the shoe industry.

The Way of the Cross known as the "Great Journey" and the Cemetery-Calvary of the Recollets, which marks the end of it, is a unique monument. Listed as a Historic Monument, it comprises 21 stations scattered around the historic center and 19 stations on the calvary site. The calvary was founded in 1516 by Romanet Boffin, a Roman merchant, in imitation of the one in Fribourg, Switzerland. A place of pilgrimage, it was intended to replace the pilgrimage to Jerusalem in the Holy Land, which had become very costly and difficult as a result of the Turkish Conquest. Numerous Stations of the Cross were built in Europe between the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th centuries. From the outset, the Romans Pilgrimage was a great success. The Stations of the Cross and the Calvary have undergone many vicissitudes. Today, it remains a Living Heritage §. Every year on Good Friday, several hundred people make the Grand Voyage. Above all, it is a remarkable monument that the town is committed to restoring and enhancing. The celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Way of the Cross in 2016 was an opportunity to raise its profile. At the same time, a major restoration campaign was launched in 2016. The work was completed in June 2017, and it is now possible to visit the calvary site with guided tours organized by Ville et Pays d'Art et d'Histoire! Are you an early riser? This close-knit company sub-contracts for famous brands and also produces their own brand of shoes "Made in Romans". Romans was historically France’s shoemaking capital, and for several decades the town’s footwear industry had a worldwide reputation. In the 2010s, new brands and artisan shoemakers established here, reviving the local footwear industry. This living museum includes shoemaking workshops open to the public and a shop selling a variety of shoe brands made exclusively in Romans.

The Tour Jacquemart stands atop an ancient gate in the original walls of the town. The tower was built in the 12th century, while the clock was installed in 1429. It owes its name to the automated bell-ringer who strikes out the hour with his hammer. n the 15th century, the Consuls ordered a monumental clock from Pierre Cudrifin, a clockmaker from Friborg in Switzerland. It has a large bronze bell which dates from 1545 and weighs 2,300 kilos. The automaton has been striking the hours since 1429. This carved wooden and zinc automaton is dressed in the "jackets" of the peasants, hence the nickname by Jacquemart. This character becomes the spokesperson for republican ideas. It measures 2.60m in height.

The Josaphat staircase takes its name from the valley located east of Jerusalem, near the Mount of Olives, and crossed by the Cedron, a watercourse represented in Romans by the Savasse torrent which is now covered. In 1516, a rich merchant from Romans by the name of Romanet Boffin founded a Stations of the Cross in Romans and erected several chapels in the streets of the city. Quite naturally, the Romans then named several places in reference to the Stations of the Cross or to the City of Jerusalem. This is how the Josaphat staircase takes its name from the valley situated to the east of Jerusalem, near the Mount of Olives, and crossed by the Cédron, a watercourse represented in Romans by the Savasse torrent covered today. The Mount of Olives itself gave its name to the Montolivet hill, at the foot of the Hatter hill. There are stations called “The Mount of Olives” and “The Prayer of Jesus in the Garden of Olives”.

By giving the floor to the actors, this exhibition reveals the different facets of this major heritage project. The territory of Valence Romans Agglo is organized around two central towns, Valence and Romans-sur-Isère, each representing its own landscape entities: the plain of Valence and the Drôme des collines. The objective of these two Houses of Heritage of the territory of Valence Romans Agglo is to raise awareness and give keys to understanding through exhibitions, activities and visits. These are places of information, sharing and pedagogy. Valence Romans Agglo has the national label City and Country of art and history whose main objective is to raise awareness, inform and educate about local heritage. History Located in the first urban core of the city, the Maison du Mouton is one of the oldest buildings in Romans. On the street and on the courtyard, its two Gothic facades are indeed dated from the end of the 13th or the beginning of the 14th century. Ashlar stones, painted decorations, extent of the spaces indicate that it belonged to a well-off family. The woolen cloth trade then made the fortune of the city: perhaps one should see in it the explanation of its name. A sheep’s head has adorned the facade since its origin. Very deteriorated, it was returned during major restoration works carried out between 2020 and 2024. The stone used probably comes from the molasses quarries located in Châteauneuf-sur-Isère. These quarries, about fifteen kilometers apart, were exploited from antiquity to the 19th century. Once extracted, the molasse, fine stoneware and easy to cut, circulated by river, both towards Romans and towards Valencia. For the framework and intermediate floors, softwood was mainly used. Beautiful medieval house abandoned during the 20th century, the Maison du Mouton was acquired by the City of Romans in 2020. Open to the public after restoration since 2025, it now houses one of the two sites of the Heritage House of the Land of Art and History of Valence Romans Agglo. The public there discovers the history and architectural heritage of Romans and the Drôme des collines. In Valence, the visitor can continue his visit at the Maison des Têtes, second site dedicated to local heritage. Originally, the ground floor had a commercial or artisanal vocation. The large bays being closed by wooden shutters, the light came from square-shaped light cannons, drilled into the masonry and located high up. The French oak ceiling was restored during the restoration work. It is through this space that the public enters the Heritage House today. An educational workshop also welcomes teachers and their classes. The rear facade of the house is remarkably preserved in its 14th century state. Under the modern staircase, the original straight staircase has been partially preserved. It gave access to the floors from the outside, from the courtyard. The frame of a well is also visible in the masonry. At the back of the house, a building was erected in the 15th or 16th century. This outbuilding could have served as an annex for residential and service uses. Upstairs, a majestic room nearly six meters high corresponds to the aula of the medieval house. Both a reception room and a space for private use, it was the heart of the residence. Heated by an imposing chimney now disappeared, the hall was lit by two tall gothic bays, geminate and trilobed. In front of them, there are seat cushions. These benches arranged in the window recess served as seats. The second floor was able to house the housing of the servants and storage spaces. The offices of the Heritage-Country service for art and history are now located there. Archaeological excavations have unearthed numerous traces of painted decorations, which reveal a pronounced medieval taste for color and geometric patterns. In the aula, a decoration dated from the 14th century, composed of yellow squares on a red background and white borders, was discovered during the work. It has been preserved in situ. In this same room, a decor from the Hôtel de Loulle presents a frieze of coats of arms decorated with plant motifs, in shades of black, red, yellow and blue. The quality of these paintings indicates that high-ranking families occupied the houses in the neighborhood. On the second floor, a simpler decoration, imitating an apparatus of stones, was also discovered. It covered the entire space, in a common approach to many buildings of the same period.

It was on Place Jules Nadi (the most shaded and busiest promenade in Romans at the end of the 19th century) that the kiosk was built in 1888, with musical societies already in the habit of giving concerts on this place. The city and its inhabitants have been enriched thanks to the development and prosperity of the shoe industry: it is the commercial travelers who take the initiative to build a kiosk in our city. Funding was found through subscriptions, a municipal grant and a big party on October 2, 1887. The construction of the kiosk also corresponds to the commemoration of the centenary of the States of the Dauphiné and the arrival in garrison of the 75th infantry regiment. The actively carried out work enabled the inauguration on June 3, 1888. On July 22, the President of the Republic, Sadi Carnot, came to Romans to lay the foundation stone for the Monument to the States of the Dauphiné. He is received at the Town Hall by the Mayor and can thus admire the kiosk. It Has been restored in 2018 and is once again hosting concerts and cultural events

Opposite the collegiate church at the bottom of rue Pêcherie, place du Puits-du-Cheval. The source, which feeds this well and the fountain, finds its origin in a legend mixing God… and devil! According to legend, young Romanians who had abused alcoholic drinks a little would provoke the devil in these terms: "Let the devil come, we will ride him like a horse!". Immediately, a small horse appears in front of them and the young people, in no way impressed, decide to ride it. Always in a supernatural way, the horse lengthens as our intrepid young people get on it and suddenly, it goes towards Isère. The young people then understand that he is the incarnation of the devil that they had just provoked and they invoke the help of God. But when the horse arrives at the edge of the Isère, the earth opens under its hooves and, unbalanced, it rears up and ejects our unfortunate repentants before being engulfed in the depths of the earth. A source then springs up at this precise location.

On the foundations of an old mill burned in 1971, the boss and his team have reconstructed this country inn where you will taste the farm products cooked in a wood oven.
