La Maison Figuet

La Maison Figuet

Description

This Haussmann-style house was built in 1888 by Adolphe Figuet, an emblematic figure in the history of the Romans shoe industry, and later Mayor of the town.
Behind the house was a factory built by A. Figuet in 1889.
Beneath the roof cornice, the words ‘Manufacture de chaussures’ are still legible, engraved on black marble. The walls are made of molasse and covered with a moulded cement finish, a technique that was very much in vogue at the time and can be seen in Grenoble and Valence.
Between the two windows on the second floor, a medallion features a lion – the company’s emblem – and the initials ‘A.F.’, standing for Adolphe Figuet. On two window lintels, medallions depict tools of the trade and a shoe, along with a caduceus symbolising commerce. The following year, he had workshops with shed roofs built against the south wall.
