Indeed it seems to be organized in a semi-circle around the apse. You will admire the Château de la Marthonie, a listed monument located in the heart of the village, which majestically dominates the pretty square of Saint Jean. One of the most famous residents of this building was Mondot de la Marthonie, first president of the Court of the Parliament of Bordeaux and then in Paris, adviser to the Queen Mother when Francis I went to Italy. Finally, even if you don't use it because of the very slippery pebbles, you will notice the stone bridge that spans the côle.

Nice 9,5 km loop starting from St Front la Rivière. Stroll in the middle of nature, admire the views over the Dronne Valley and discover the historical heritage of the area, in particular the Château du Saulnier and the Romanesque church of St Front; further on you will pass the ruins of the Château de la Renaudie and the Château du Pommier.

The "Saut du Chalard" is a surprising and refreshing place. Fresh as the Dronne, a river that comes here to make its way between the granite blocks, taking on the air of a torrent. To reach the Saut du Chalard, a path goes down through the forest in which the conifers introduced at the beginning of the 20th century following the rural exodus rub shoulders with the indigenous hardwoods. The granite blocks around the path remind us that we are still in the foothills of the Massif Central. The river which flows at the bottom of the valley has made its way through the crystalline base over the millennia. It is the largest underground network in the Périgord. More than 13 km were explored to date. Rainwater percolation created a beautiful natural scenery. You will admire impressive flows of calcite deposits, delicate stalactites, transparent draperies and countless stalagmites. Prehistoric paintings were discovered. Made more than 19,000 years ago, they represent the authentic testimony of our ancestors’ art. Some of them, such as the rotunda of horses, are covered with a thin layer of calcite which gives them their particular bluish hue. You will admire as well the bison and sorcerer scene, one of the rare human representations in prehistoric art. You will enjoy outside a new discovery footpath about fauna, flora and climates from Prehistory until the Present.

Puyguilhem Château, built in the 16th century for Mondot de la Marthonie, displays it elegant, Renaissance style silhouette against the Villars woods, near Brantôme in the middle of Périgord Vert. You get the best view of its impressive shape from the perfectly trimmed boxwood massif in front of the Historic Monument listed building: The main building, with bay windows, is flanked by towers and turrets of various shapes. Inside, a wide staircase leads you to different furnished rooms, decorated with tapestries. Admire the exceptional fireplace showing the twelve works of Hercules, then return the gallery on the top floor of the château where you can see an oak frame in the shape of an overturned boat hull. Villars has other surprises for tourists, including one of the most beautiful painted caves in Périgord, and Boschaud abbey.

Saulnier Castle is located east of a small river (the Dronne), whose water was diverted to feed a canal and a moat. It was built on the site of a medieval fortified house, of which the 13th-century stair tower is the most significant remnant. It comprises two L-shaped residential wings, one to the north dating from the 15th century and the other to the west dating from the 16th century. In the inner courtyard stands a fine Perigord example of a Renaissance-style covered well. The entire property, including the well, is listed as a historic monument. From the village, a sign indicates the direction to get to this magnificent natural site. You will have to leave your car on a small car park and then follow the footpath that leads to a lovely waterfall on the river "la Dronne".
