This route around Vézac will take you between the plain and the hills to discover the natural and landscape riches of this exceptional territory. Along the Dordogne river, you will see the castles of Beynac, Marqueyssac, Fayrac and Les Milandes. You will follow the same paths as the inhabitants of Vézac, along the Trel and Pontou rivers, when they went to the mills. This route allows you to discover the mills of Treil (oil), of l'Evêque in perfect working order (flour) and the mill of Caillou with a passage through the station from where the millstones extracted from Cénac and Domme, reputed to be among the best in France, left for Bordeaux and the whole world.

At the foot of its imposing castle which watches over the Dordogne, Beynac and Cazenac adds to the beauty of its site the pleasures of water and the gastronomy of the Périgord. In the Middle Ages, the defensive site of Beynac became the seat of one of the four baronies of the Périgord. Besieged by Richard the Lionheart and then dismantled by Simon de Montfort, the castle was rebuilt during the Hundred Years' War, taken and recaptured by the armies of England and France, before being restored during the Revolution. The imposing castral complex overlooks the roofs of the village and its blonde facades. Developed between rivers and cliffs, sheltered by an enclosure, Beynac has long lived on the traffic on the Dordogne. A former pilgrimage route of 180 kilometers from the Périgord to Rocamadour, this magnificent route is now marked out, and allows you to cross the vineyards and hills of Bergerac in complete safety, before skirting the green Dordogne valley and its cliffs, to arrive in the valley of the Ouysse. For this 8th stage, further upstream from the Dordogne, you will pass by the church of Cenac, an ancient priory built in 1090, where you will admire the sculpted niches and modillions. Domme is just a stone's throw away, at the top of a rocky spur overlooking the Dordogne. This bastide, built in 1281 by the French king Philippe III le hardi, has a defensive system that has been preserved. The ramparts are still in place as well as the three doors giving access to the city. The door of the Towers is the most visited because of the graffiti left by imprisoned Templars.

The Dordogne valley expresses a strong continuity, without any breaks, along its course, highlighting the many astonishing places that line it. In addition to the "natural" compositions, it is often the hand of man that has created the renowned sites of this valley. A number of castles and villages blend remarkably well with their surroundings, highlighting some of the valley?s must-see sites: Domme on a promontory, the Château de Beynac overlooking the valley, La Roque-Gageac between cliff and river... The landscape bears open-air didactic witness to its history. Elsewhere, villages have sprung up along the valley, a corridor for easy communication, at the foot of the slopes but not far from the water, each with its own particularity and charm.

The Dordogne river is born in the Puy de Sancy by the confluence of the torrents of the Dore and the Dogne. After crossing the Massif Central, the Corrèze and part of the Lot, it enters the Périgord and meets limestone soils that it will notch, bypass to form its famous cingles (loops), or find other passages and form dead arms, the "couasnes" valued for fishing. The holm oaks border the top of the sometimes steep cliffs. Having served for a long time as an axis of circulation between the Corrèze and the Gironde, the river allows today various nautical activities of leisure, while preserving its natural framework, the river being classified as "World Reserve of Biosphere" by UNESCO.

Castelnaud la Chapelle, classified as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France", dominates the confluence of the Dordogne and Céou rivers. Its terraced layout, which can be climbed along the steep little streets, offers an exceptional wealth of heritage. Abandoned during the Revolution, the Château de Castelnaud was used as a stone quarry in the 19th century, before its classification as a Historic Monument prevented it from falling into ruin in 1996. After major restoration campaigns, it once again stands above the valley, offering a panoramic view of the villages of Beynac-et-Cazenac and La Roque-Gageac. It houses the Museum of War in the Middle Ages. Agriculture, crafts, shops, the richness of the associative life, the green vegetation of the site, ideal starting point of many walks or canoeing along the Dordogne, ensure its reputation.

This 25 km cycle route is perfect for cycling peacefully. Cycling on small roads and paths between Castelnaud La Chapelle and the Abbey Nouvelle in the Lot, it will take you through a valley which benefits from a very mild climate, hence the Mediterranean vegetation on its hillsides. Castelnaud La Chapelle is listed as one of the most beautiful villages in France with a castle overlooking the river Dordogne. It was converted into a War Museum in the Middle Ages. If you go for a stroll, you will also see there is a museum dedicated to the famous walnut of the Périgord. There is an interesting statue representing a ""gabarrier"" (the driver of those special riverboat) on the riverside.

Vézac, a small village of 600 inhabitants, is located in the heart of the Dordogne Valley, at the gates of Sarlat. Its flagship: Marqueyssac, a sumptuous listed site whose 18th century castle has a magnificent garden decorated with pruned boxwood, classified as a "Remarkable Garden of France". In the south of the Périgord Noir, Beynac-et-Cazenac is situated on the Dordogne river, from which it controls the traffic and draws part of its wealth. It was once a stopover for the "gabariers" (boatmen) who travelled down the river carrying various goods. Inhabited since prehistoric times, it is its medieval heritage, its walled enclosure with fortified gates and its castle built from the 12th to the 17th centuries, which make it so attractive today. Discover the districts of the medieval village of Beynac and Cazenac, clinging to the cliff, sheltered by the castle. Each district or "barry" evokes the different activities of this formerly fortified village: boating, fishing, wood and hemp craftsmanship... not forgetting the role of controlling the passage through the Dordogne valley. Listed as a Historical Monument in 1966, Castelnaud castle overlooks the Dordogne valley and has a great view over the château and village of Beynac to the north and the hanging gardens of Marqueyssac opposite in the curve of the river. Owned by the Rossillon family, the château built from the 12th to the 15th centuries has had three major renovation works which now make it one of the most visited sites in Périgord Noir. Completely devoted to the art of war in the Middle Ages, this fortified castle is a children’s dream come true: Powerful keep, machicolation, reconstructions of large-scale war missiles and a significant collection of weapons and armour in the Museum of War in the Middle Ages. There are various events on throughout the year: Try on a suit of armour, watch a trebuchet demonstration or experience another era with a night-time dramatised visit (in summer).
