Discover Maizeroy in Moselle, Lorraine

The setting of the valley floor for this tour of remarkable natural and historical heritage. It was in 1720 that the current château de Pange was built, surrounded by a garden designed by the architect Louis Benech. Not far away is Maizeroy, a village with beautifully restored Lorraine facades. The French Nied and its wet meadows form an interesting natural area for its fauna and flora.

Framed by the two Nieds, German and French, this hilly circuit takes us through fields and groves, on winding roads rich in heritage. You'll spot some remarkable buildings, including the Château d'Urville in Courcelles-Chaussy and the medieval-looking Château de Landonvillers, straight out of a fairytale. There's plenty of fun to be had on this tour, with a number of treasures and museums to delight even the most inquisitive visitor.

Follow in the footsteps of Kaiser Wilhelm II who, in order to get closer to the people of Moselle during the Annexation, had several buildings constructed in Courcelles-Chaussy (the temple, the Pavilion, the Château d'Urville, etc.). Courcelles-Chaussy is ideal for a stroll along its central street where the facades line up harmoniously on either side of the Ravenez. After crossing the forest that the Emperor used to walk through during his hunts, you will discover the magnificent castle of Landonvillers, straight out of a fairy tale and transformed by the architect who restored the Haut-Koenigsbourg.

This hill, located at 325 metres above sea level, is the highlight of the walk. It is a magnificent belvedere with a remarkable 360° view. Here you will discover majestic, centuries-old trees. They give this place all its serenity: a chapel dating from 1865 and its adjacent cemetery, as well as an imposing Lorraine cross erected in 1976 in memory of the combatants of the Second World War.

12 km long and entirely flat, the Pays de Pange green way is a safe route accessible on foot, by bike or with a pram. It takes you through a wild landscape in which the Nied river winds its way through a verdant valley.

This route alternates between the valley bottoms and the ridge paths, from which you can see all the way to the Moselle hills. Made up of dense shrubby vegetation, the reverse side of these ridges is home to wild boar, who come here to feugner, as they say in Lorraine (turning over the earth to find food).

Courcelles-sur-Nied, a small, dynamic rural town, and its neighbouring communes have managed to preserve a generous natural environment. Pleasant paths lead you through the Camat and Hauts de Sorbey woods in an undulating landscape. As you pass through Mécleuves, beware of the "blanc bâtons", the inhabitants who once practised black magic.

With its various themed gardens and plant creations, discover the Jardins Fruitiers de Laquenexy. The site was created in 1904 to help wine growers rebuild their vineyards following the outbreak of Phylloxera. The Moselle department acquired it in 1954 to turn it into a horticultural testing centre, a fruit-growing experimentation centre in 1980 and finally, in 2004, a new impetus was given to it with the creation of the "Jardins Fruitiers de Laquenexy".

The gardens of Pange and Laquenexy are part of the “Gardens without Borders” network of twenty-five remarkable gardens open to visitors in France, Germany, and Luxembourg. Pange Garden, which was designed by landscape architect Louis Benech, is both rural and contemporary. It reflects the estate’s history in the 18th century. At Laquenexy, the fruit gardens offer a delicious mixture of vegetable plots, flowers, and fruit varieties in a chain of eighteen themed areas forming a surprise-filled garden walk.

This pedestrian link joins the "Boucle de l'Amitié" to the "Circuit des jardins fruitiers".

Museum Gaspar is housed in the residence of the middle-class family Gaspar from Arlon who had set up in this house (1893) that was built in 1842. It was renovated in 2004. The two most famous members of this family are animal sculptor Jean-Marie Gaspar (1861-1931) and Charles Gaspar (1971-1950) who was a photographer and a sponsor. He gave his house to the town of Arlon on the condition they make a museum of it, dedicated to his brother's work and that put into honour the history and the heritage of Arlon. At the first floor, theree are two restored salons identical to a middle-class salon from the early 20th century that show Jean-Marie Gaspar's sculptures. and the art and picture collection of Charles Gaspar. The rest of the first floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions of the museum that alternates artv and history. A religion room shows collections about the abbey of Orval and to the people's devotion at the 18th century, and also relics from the ancient Saint-Martin church. But the Masterpiece is the famous altarpiece Retable de Fisenne - a 16th century masterpiece from the Antwerp school. It was bought in 1893 by a middle-class family from Arlon, the family Gaspar. Jean Gaspar (1861-1931) was a sculptor. He was trained by the Antwerp sculptor Jef Lambeaux. His works are in bronze and in plaster and they are exhibited in the salons that have been restorated as they were in his house. It hosts the library of the Archaeological Institute of the Belgian Province of Luxembourg and its secretary office since 1954. Rich in the Gallo-Roman past of Arlon, the museum houses an impressive collection that bears witness to the daily life of this period.One of the peculiarities of the museum is its imposing and rich lapidary collection, composed of several dozen fragments of ancient funerary monuments.These blocks and the objects from Roman craftsmanship will teach you more about daily life at that time.

South-east of Metz lies Château de Pange, rebuilt in the 18th century on the site of a medieval fortress. On the edge of the village, its austere ensemble is reflected in the waters of the Nied Française. Designed by architect Jean-Baptiste Louis, the château was built in 1720 by Jean-Baptiste Thomas, Seigneur de Pange. The land was made a marquisate in 1766 by Stanislas, Duke of Lorraine, and is still occupied by the Thomas de Pange family. Historic monument. Built in the 16th century and modernized for William II in the 19th century, Château d'Urville is now part of the agricultural school. Open to the public on European Heritage Days.

Recreated at the dawn of the year 2000 to designs by landscape architect Louis Benech, the garden at Pange enhances the estate's rustic spirit and the harmony of the landscape. While the regular structure is in keeping with the classic lines of the residence, the planting is contemporary in spirit, combining wild meadows and rooms of roses and perennials. The driveway, which follows the winding course of the river Nied, leads the visitor into the romantic park with its three-hundred-year-old oak trees. The Pange garden has been awarded the "Jardin Remarquable" label.

In 1681, the château was described as a small moated castle closed by a drawbridge. Transformed in the 17th century, it was disfigured by the construction of a new building in 1856. The entrance gate to the courtyard dates from 1867. The château is privately owned and cannot be visited.
