A very nice (very) hilly road bike route, which crosses the wild Dordogne valley several times, notably via the impressive Chastang dam. The route starts from the small village of Espagnac, then follows the Doustre gorges, with superb views of La Roche-Basse. It then crosses the Dordogne at the Barrage du Chastang, before climbing to the village of Servières-le-Château (Côte de Servières). After a flatter section to Auriac, a steep descent leads to the Pont du Chambon, a cast iron suspension bridge. A 5km climb (Côte des Charbonniers) brings you back to the plateau before finishing the last 20km more quietly...

From the terraced gardens of "Bardot" to the chestnut dryers, this short circular walk in the heart of the Gorges de la Dordogne will delight young and old alike.From the car park, follow the road down towards the Marcillac hydroelectric plant for 300 m. It passes the foot of the surge tank for the penstock, the enclosed pipeline, which brings water from the Valletta dam.Follow the gravel path on the left (signed Jardin de Bardot) for 150 m, make a right-angled turn to the right, and start the descent into the wooded valley with its hornbeam, oak and chestnut trees. The trail passes over the penstock, near a water tower and continues down into the gorges.At the intersection, after a reservoir, continue straight ahead until you reach the junction of the paths. You can access the Dordogne riverbank by continuing straight ahead.Follow the path to the left, climb the steps, pass by a former chestnut dryer, a "séchadour" and enter the Jardin de Bardot (a restored site). Continue along the steep path that begins at the top and to the right of the terraced garden. It zig-zags up the steep slope. On a bend, a path leads to a cave used by the Resistance, 100 m away. At the top, continue to the left on the flat and take the path that goes back up the valley.Continue on the stone path, pass in front of the Pas du Diable, the Fauteuil de Dieu, and the Buse de Granit and you will find a restored "séchadour.Take the track on the left, pass the belvedere of Le Busatier (a panoramic viewpoint looking out over the Dordogne valley; now look up into the sky: peregrine falcons, black and red kites nest nearby) and then find the starting point again.

Around 1905, Joseph MAS (nicknamed Bardot) and his wife Maria decided to become market gardeners in the sunny gorges of the Dordogne. They built an atypical terraced garden on the slopes. Strawberries, grapes and peaches made their gardens famous. Today it is the property of the Conservatoire Régional des Espaces Naturels du Limousin and has been restored and protected. Welcome to L'Hyvernerie, we are delighted to welcome you to our home. Part of a typical Corrézienne farmhouse, it was built by my great-grandfather in 1892, Antoine Mazuel, a cabinetmaker whose initials are engraved above the front door. It's a family home, where I lived with my parents and two brothers until the age of 25. You may have the chance to meet Alice when she visits her animals in the meadow below the house. It's best not to go into the meadow when the cows are there. They don't know you and would be frightened. But you're welcome to gaze at them at your leisure and photograph them - they love to be the stars! We wish you a pleasant, relaxing stay, and hope you enjoy discovering our beautiful Corrèze.

Surrounded by the meandering Doustre river, the village is made up of Roche-Haute, on the edge of the plateau, and Roche-Basse, 100 m lower down, built into the hillside. Characteristic of Roche-Basse, known from the 9th century onwards, are the narrow paths known as "courrijoux", which gave access to the terraced fields, and the Tour Canillac, from the small square with its fountain, which bears witness to the medieval imprint of the site.

The commune of Gumond, bordered by the Doustre valley to the east, has a rugged relief, but also spreads out over the plateau with its many ponds in the western part. The Etang de Laborde is a renowned fishing and bathing spot, with several activities on offer in season. The characterful houses, with their slate or lauze roofs, are built in an arc around the church.

Situated between the Doustre gorges to the east and the steep slopes of the Bétaille stream to the south, Champagnac-la-Prune finds a much less tortured relief on the Étangs plateau, from which you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Xaintrie.

Gros-Chastang is a pretty village nestled in the middle of a forest, bordered to the east by the Dordogne and to the west by the Doustre stream. This small village is a haven of peace, with an ancient church and numerous "corréziennes" stone-roofed houses. In autumn, you can listen to the stag bellow at the stag and wildlife observatory not far from the village.

Les Jardins d'Yzorche was created in 2017. For several years now, Javotte and her husband have been developing this business producing PAM (Perfumed, aromatic and medicinal plants) as well as tourist accommodation. This life project takes shape year after year. Since the creation of the gardens, the cultivation and harvesting of aromatic and medicinal plants have been small-scale, organic and Ecocert-certified. She favors quality over quantity. These are products made with heart and love in the Xaintrie region.

Permanent exhibitions and events

Former railroad bridge used for the Tacot Tulle-Ussel. This 207m-long metal cage bridge was not built until 1949, near Marcillac, due to the construction of the Vallette dam, which covered 5km of the former Transcorrézien route with 15m of water. Previously, the train crossed the Doustre (a tributary of the Dordogne) on a small stone bridge (which can still be seen when EDF empties the reservoir). Today, it serves as a road bridge.

Saint-Pardoux lies close to the Doustre river and the reservoir of the Valette dam. The village, like its immediate surroundings, is teeming with small-scale heritage features that bear witness to the social ties of yesteryear (wash-house, bread oven, drying sheds, wells, etc.). A charming Romanesque church, probably dating back to the 10th century, a 12th-century castle and a miraculous fountain on the banks of the Doustre river are all well worth a visit.

In Champagnac-la-Prune, Anne-Marie Gouttenègre is a must: grocer, tobacconist and, above all, one of the best cooks in the area. At her home, you'll be welcomed like a guest. Anne-Marie will serve you the dish straight from the table, giving it a perfectly authentic flavor. In fine weather, you can also enjoy the beautiful terrace, surrounded by vegetation and old stones.

In a warm and friendly atmosphere, "just like home", they offer traditional cuisine with an Italian influence to die for. Chef Olivier and Gina in the kitchen will delight your taste buds.
