This conclusion to Schlieffen’s famous Plan relied on the Russians taking at least this length of time to mobilise via their poor railway system. The BEF played a small but significant part in the battle of the Marne even though Field Marshall French had seriously contemplated removing his men from the action to reform and rest. However, this major battle was largely won through the determination and courage of the French soldiers and their leaders. The French snatched a conclusive victory from what looked like an imminent defeat. The German High Command failed in its attempt to capture Paris and force the French government to capitulate. The ‘race to the sea’ now followed, in which the Allies and Central Powers atempted to outflank each other. The line of trenches was then settled from the North Sea to Switzerland. The Allies and the Central Powers now knew that the war would continue far longer than they had thought. The next few years would be spent in learning how to fight a new kind of war with new weapons in the air and on the ground. The price of this process would be paid in blood.

Located on the plateau overlooking the Loing valley, here is a charming village in the middle of the plains and woods. The village grew from the 4th century thanks to easily exploitable iron mines that allowed the development of a flourishing industry. Similarly, its location at the crossroads of several ancient Roman roads makes Egreville an important stop, especially thanks to its fairs and markets. But also, with the passage of the many pilgrims who criss-cross the region and find the cottage and the canopy. For this reason, the governor of Castle Landon acquired the estate at the beginning of the sixteenth century and became the first lord of Egreville. First, he built the first chapel of Saint-Martin and a castle around which the village developed. Then, on the order of Saint-Louis, the village was fortified in the 13th century. The village suffered some damage during the hundred-year war. Then, in the sixteenth century, François the first offers the fief to his mistress, Anne of Pisseleu, Duchess of Etampes. The latter, together with her heirs, undertook important restorations and constructions. They will also prosper the village. In the middle of the woods, the ford at the hamlet of Barbigny is a real refreshing stop for hikers. There is a pleasant ford in the hamlet of Barbigny where the Betz flows, ideal for picnics with family and friends.

Among Grand's most emblematic monuments, the basilica and the mosaic it houses are in an exceptional state of preservation. The mosaic also stands out for its size (232 m2), its geometric decoration, and the presence of animals around the central painting, the emblema. The exhibition space invites visitors to discover this rich heritage, through a collection of sculptures, witnesses to daily life, and also rare ivory, bone and wood objects discovered in the village's many wells.

The area between the rampart and the amphitheatre was occupied in Antiquity by a vast public building, which could have been a thermal complex if we consider the remains discovered in the 19th century under the neighbouring orchards. Excavations carried out between 2010 and 2016 uncovered a gallery leading to these buildings. This gallery, 6 m wide and over 40 m long, was distinguished by the richness of its decoration, given the large number of marble fragments and painted plaster found. The square in front of the portico was crossed by an underground pipe that probably connected the spring beneath the church with the thermal baths it fed. A selection of the objects unearthed during these excavations is on display in the Mosaic Museum.
