Located in Mortemart, one of France's most beautiful villages and a listed historic monument, the motte is at the crossroads of ancient roads. One of Mortemart's mottes, a symbol of the Drut family's power, bears witness to early feudalism around the year 1000. Abbon Drut, knight and lord of Mortemart, supported the Count of La Marche against the King of France during the siege of Bellac in 995. Nearby was the parish church of Saint-Hilaire, destroyed in the early 19th century.

At the beginning of the 18th century, Duke Louis II de Rochechouart-Mortemart, using his seigneurial rights, authorized fairs and markets. The hall may well date back to this period. Rectangular in plan and open, it features 12 oak posts supporting a framework of four trusses. The roof is made of canal tiles. It was restored in 2013. Important monthly fairs continued to be held in Mortemart until the Second World War. A historic monument, today?s (privately-owned) château is probably the result of the transformation of one of the mottes castrales. Part of the moat that once surrounded the château still exists. Inside, in the private section, a section of the square keep wall remains, typical of the 13th century, when the Mortemart seigneury passed, by marriage, to the Rochechouart family. It was at the end of the 15th century that the château was modernized, with dwellings flanked by towers. The Rochechouart-Mortemart family became one of France?s most prestigious noble families. In 1650, Louis XIV established Mortemart as a duchy-peerage, giving the lords of Mortemart the title of dukes. Before the French Revolution, the Dukes of Mortemart held the high office of Governor of the Invalides. In the 14th century, during the era of the popes in Avignon, many ecclesiastics, particularly from the Limousin region, enjoyed brilliant careers. Such was the case of Pierre Gauvain, a native of Mortemart. Bishop of Viviers and Auxerre, he became a cardinal at the court of Avignon. His will of 1335 provided for the foundation of three convents in Mortemart, including a convent of Carmelite friars and a hospital for the poor. The current buildings, rebuilt in the late 17th and first half of the 18th centuries, are vast and imposing. Saint Hilaire de Poitiers de Mortemart is the former chapel of the Augustinian convent, now a parish church dating from the 14th century. It contains a number of remarkable curiosities, including magnificent 15th-century oak stalls with carved "miséricordes" representing animals, demons and vices beneath the seats. Triangular medallions at the top of the backrests depict trades. The church also features a 19th-century canvas painting of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which adorns the monumental altarpiece and its 17th-century gilded wooden altarpiece. There is also a remarkable 17th-century gilded wooden lectern. Two 15th-century panel paintings, the Resurrection of Christ and the Assumption of the Virgin, crown the building.

Located in Mortemart, a village classified as one of France's most beautiful villages, the Augustinian convent is a listed historic monument. Cardinal Gauvain?s will provided for the foundation of a convent of Augustinian friars to educate 12 children. The current buildings are a reconstruction from the late 17th or early 18th century. The present-day town hall, formerly a secondary school, features a handsome double spiral staircase with wooden banister. The main building was designed by the famous architect Brousseau, author of numerous châteaux in the region, including the Episcopal Palace in Limoges.
