Museum Gaspar is housed in the residence of the middle-class family Gaspar from Arlon who had set up in this house (1893) that was built in 1842. It was renovated in 2004. The two most famous members of this family are animal sculptor Jean-Marie Gaspar (1861-1931) and Charles Gaspar (1971-1950) who was a photographer and a sponsor. He gave his house to the town of Arlon on the condition they make a museum of it, dedicated to his brother's work and that put into honour the history and the heritage of Arlon. At the first floor, theree are two restored salons identical to a middle-class salon from the early 20th century that show Jean-Marie Gaspar's sculptures. and the art and picture collection of Charles Gaspar. The rest of the first floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions of the museum that alternates artv and history. A religion room shows collections about the abbey of Orval and to the people's devotion at the 18th century, and also relics from the ancient Saint-Martin church. But the Masterpiece is the famous altarpiece Retable de Fisenne - a 16th century masterpiece from the Antwerp school. It was bought in 1893 by a middle-class family from Arlon, the family Gaspar. Jean Gaspar (1861-1931) was a sculptor. He was trained by the Antwerp sculptor Jef Lambeaux. His works are in bronze and in plaster and they are exhibited in the salons that have been restorated as they were in his house. His brother Charles (1871-1950) was a photographer, a collector and a sponsor. He gave this house to the town of Arlon. It hosts the library of the Archaeological Institute of the Belgian Province of Luxembourg and its secretary office since 1954. A wide part of the museum is also dedicated to temporary exhibitions about art and history of Arlon.

La chapelle Saint-Martin
3 km

La chapelle Saint-Martin

The former parish church of Saint-Martin, now a chapel, dominates the village. It comprises a bell tower surmounting a square bay extended by a semicircular apse, flanked on the north and south by two small rectangular transepts. It dates from the 12th century. The transept crossing is vaulted with ogives made of large rounded cornices whose ends, embedded in the walls, end in the shape of a pencil point, which is quite common in Lorraine. Less common is the fact that the arms of the transept have transverse barrel vaults. The apse is cross-vaulted, with decoration added in the 18th century. This combination of different architectural techniques is what makes this building so interesting, and it is listed on the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments. When the nave was demolished, the side altars and their altarpieces were moved from the nave to the transepts. The torso columns of the altarpieces are artfully decorated with bunches of grapes and grape leaves. The upper cornice supported statues that are now stored in the new church. The high altar is in wood, painted white with gilding. The present transept windows were added late, probably when the original openings were blocked by 18th-century decoration. The large central arcade has been closed by a glazed metal door. Externally, there are two interesting parts: the tower and the chevet. Above the transept crossing rises a square Romanesque bell tower, lit on each side by geminated openings with colonnettes. It was raised at the end of the Middle Ages to provide refuge from wars and banditry, which explains why a ladder was needed to reach it.

Templar chapel of Libdeau

Templar chapel of Libdeau

The Libdeau chapel is the only surviving example of a Templar commandery built around the second third of the 12th century, a few kilometers from the episcopal city of Toul. Of the twenty or so Templar sites identified in Lorraine, only four remain today. Libdeau is the only one to retain its vaulted ceiling. Probably the result of a reconstruction after the first oratory, its architectural style bears witness to the transition from Romanesque to Gothic art in the 13th century. High windows with two or three paired bays and a large stone rose window divided into twelve three-lobed petals stand alongside a semicircular portal. The lintel is carved with a Virgin and Child surrounded by two thurifer angels (carrying a censer). Above the rose is a small Romanesque window. The chapel retains some traces of painted decoration on the lancet windows and the choir window. Paintings can hopefully be found under the preserved plaster. Three polychrome crosses remain from the chapel's consecration. In 1963, the portal was dismantled stone by stone and transferred to the Musée Lorrain in Nancy, along with three tombstones. In 1995, the chapel was listed on the supplementary inventory of Historic Monuments. Since 2013, it has been the subject of restoration work initiated by the "Libdeau-Chapelle Templière" association, which has become its owner. The aim is to restore it to its original state, taking into account the Templar remains and the traces of transformation that have taken place in its history. A copy of the portal will be restored. It will be a place for visits and cultural events, integrated into the life of the Toulois region and beyond. At present, it is not possible to offer permanent tours. The public can take part in tours organized by the Terres Touloises Tourist Office. It is also possible to visit the chapel when the association's volunteers come to maintain the site, generally on the last Wednesday of each month. A guided group visit can be organized on request from the association's president. In this case, a participation fee is charged.
