Occupying the former bed of the Moselle when it flowed into the Meuse some 350,000 years ago, this cross-border marshland with the Meuse is bordered by the Paris - Strasbourg railway line and the Marne au Rhin canal. It is an alkaline peat bog, formed over the last 2,000 years by the accumulation of peat over a thickness of 2.5 meters. Decomposition has been blocked by an excess of calcareous water. This peaty soil, which is not flooded but always waterlogged, has allowed the development of limestone springs, low peat bogs and low marshes.
Municipalities concerned: Foug (54), Lay-St.-Rémy (54), Pagny-sur-Meuse (55)
