The Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge, or Service for the Maintenance of German Military Graves, was commissioned by the German government in the early 1960s to develop this military cemetery for the reunification of World War II victims.
Formerly an American-German cemetery, it became exclusively German after the war and the burial of American soldiers in Saint-Avold. 5,000 German soldiers remained on site at the end of 1944.
From 1957 onwards, the Volksbund began to search for and collect in Andilly the bodies of German soldiers who had fallen in eleven neighbouring départements.
And so, with over 33,000 graves, the largest German military necropolis was created in France, at Andilly.
