A favorite stop on the road to St Jacques de Compostela. Roman remains have been discovered at the site, such as mosaics and a marble bust of a woman. An immense and very deep well, built with small stone masonry and attributed to the Romans, is another wonder to discover. Throughout its history, Castelsagrat has endured numerous invasions and conflicts, from the Alamanni to the Normans, including the Visigoths and the Saracens. However, the town was able to be reborn and prosper under the reign of Alphonse of Poitiers in the 13th century, who made it a thriving bastide with a charter in 1270. In 1271, Castelsagrat became a royal town, marking a flourishing period of medieval liberties and consular traditions.
