Unique Origins The story of four saints (Macarius, Ferréol, Hippolytus, and Stapin) who lived in the area around Dourgne—a blend of pagan and Christian beliefs reinterpreted by the Catholic Church—fuels a popular devotion that has both natural and contingent roots. The Benedictine monks who, in 1890, founded the Abbey of En-Calcat were not indifferent to this; they transformed the Mouniès spring, associated with the cult of Saint Macarius, into the “Monks’ Spring” in order to lay claim to uncertain local monastic origins dedicated to Saint Stapin. The reputation of En-Calcat Abbey, which became an intellectual and artistic center, undoubtedly owes more to the religious background of its founder, Romain Banquet, a native of Dourgne and a monk at the Morvan Abbey of La Pierre-qui-Vire.

This tireless draftsman found his primary sources of inspiration in the landscapes of the foothills of the Montagne Noire. There, the artist drew inspiration from the lush vegetation of the meadows, heaths, and woodlands, as well as the lively scenes of herds and farmyard animals… World-renowned, his tapestries—woven in Aubusson—are on display alongside his drawings and watercolors at the Dom Robert Museum in Sorèze, serving as a true ode to nature. To walk in Dom Robert’s footsteps is to share in his quest for inspiration and to take a closer look at even the most “ordinary” biodiversity.

Come and discover a ride through the Tarn department on a loop of over 500 km, open to riders. From the Montagne Noire to the Pays des Bastides, passing through the Gaillac vineyards, the Tarn valley, the Sidobre and the Monts de Lacaune, you will be amazed by the diversity of our landscapes. This itinerary is largely based on the GR® network and can be discovered at your convenience over one or more days. A getaway to the Pays de Cocagne. A stop on the “Tour du Tarn” horseback loop, a trail ride of over 500 km open to riders. A gentler, heritage-based stage, passing through several typical Lauragais villages. This part of the route lends itself particularly well to a contemplative discovery of the area, with several shady stops and quality local shops. The route climbs from the edge of the Lauragais to the Girou region, between gentle valleys, woodland and brick farmhouses. Starting in Arles, Via Tolosana or Via Arletanensis heads towards the tomb of the Apostle James the Greater. From Camargue to Toulouse, GR®653 first follows Via Domitia, an ancient Roman road, then enters the foothills of Haut-Languedoc. This historic route runs through a vast landscape, enhanced by a rich architectural heritage. After Toulouse, GR653 crosses Gascony, northern Bigorre and Béarn. Then it enters Aspe valley and Aragon, in Spain. Voie d'Arles joins ‘el Camino frances’ at Puente-la-Reina. Spanning more than 80 hectares, the area combines recreational activities with a bird sanctuary. Countless birds can be observed from the designated observation points. Observe Without Being Seen More than 200 species of birds can be observed in the regional nature reserve (RNR)! Yet the ponds, fed by the Agout aquifer, were not originally intended to host this heron colony—one of the largest in Occitanie… The materials extracted from the ponds were intended for the construction of the railroad connecting Rodez to Castelnaudary. As early as the 1970s, the tranquility of the ponds attracted large numbers of herons. From that point on, naturalists quickly realized the importance of conserving such a “birdwatching hotspot.” Today, the Bird Trail allows visitors to walk around the reserve without disturbing its inhabitants, with observation points strategically placed along the route. Visitors can then observe gray herons, great crested grebes, black kites, and many other species without being seen… Be sure, however, to remain discreet and patient: here, cameras and binoculars are a must.

With a width of 2m, it is reserved for non-motorised modes of transport (except for horse riders). It is ideal for walking, mountain biking and provides a 17 km link to Lenclas lake from Revel. Once you reach Lenclas, the green route ends. You can then continue for around 25 km on a track to the Canal du Midi. V84 or Véloccitane is a whole itinerary from Béziers to the Canal du Midi at Naurouze threshold, via Bédarieux, Olargues, Saint-Pons-de-Thomières, Mazamet, Castres and Revel. The En Calcat Monastery was founded in 1890 by Dom Romain Banquet. The abbey church is open to anyone who wishes to come and reflect or participate in monastic prayer (liturgy in French and Gregorian chant). Louis Banquet was born in the hamlet of En Calcat in 1840. At the age of 24, he entered the monastery of La Pierre-qui-Vire, founded by Father Muard in 1850 in the Yonne department. There he became Dom Romain. In 1874, he began providing spiritual guidance to a 17-year-old girl, Marie Cronier, who was completing her studies at the Abbey of Jouarre and who was the recipient of special graces. What followed was an increasingly deep spiritual intimacy between them that would last until death parted them. On January 29, 1883, Marie Cronier received a revelation of the plan for a work to which the Lord was calling them both: “a spiritual ark that will be His own dwelling place, where souls will live in Him, where He will be the Beloved. “This will be His chosen place, if the souls He has called are blessed enough to understand it.” It was this revelation that, after many difficulties, led to the construction of our two monasteries—Saint Benedict of En Calcat and Saint Scholastica of Dourgne—founded together in 1890 and elevated to the status of abbeys in 1896. The two monasteries in Dourgne were founded together in 1890: Dom Romain BANQUET (born in the hamlet of En Calcat in 1840) established the Abbey of Saint Benedict of En Calcat for the monks, and Mother Marie CRONIER established the Abbey of Saint Scholastica for the nuns. The two communities, independent of one another, live according to the Rule written by Saint Benedict in the 6th century. Perched at an altitude of 534 meters, La Capelette de Saint-Ferréol is a true haven of peace between heaven and earth. This small, hilltop sanctuary offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Lauragais plain, the Pyrenees, and the Montagne Noire. The Chapel of Saint-Ferréol stands alone on the barren limestone plateau overlooking the village of Dourgne, which is known as the “Desert of Saint-Ferréol.” A chapel is known to have existed at this site since at least the 16th century. Its original location is now marked by a cross. The “genouillades” (Ginoulhados) can also be seen at this site. The current chapel, built in 1947 by the monks of Saint-Benoît d’Encalcat Abbey, is constructed of Dourgne limestone rubble and covered with slate from the Limatge quarry. Inside, the single nave, punctuated by transverse arches, is also reminiscent of Romanesque architecture.

The St. Ferréol Desert Nature Reserve, on the Capelette Plateau in Dourgne, where the limestone grasslands are home to a rich and fragile biodiversity. And as we follow a trail around the plateau, we’ll discover the unique features of these habitats. These habitats owe their survival to the presence of livestock on the site. A discussion with the herders will also provide insight into the site’s use for grazing and the benefits of these practices for biodiversity. Built at an altitude of 272 meters, at the foot of the Black Moutain in the shadow of the Berniquaut peak, Soreze is a small, historic town full of character. It is pleasant to stroll through the streets lined with half-timbered, jettied-out houses from the 16th and the 17th century. The 15th century St. Martin bell-tower is the sole vestige of the former parish church burnt down during the Religion Wars. Soreze owns its fame to its Abbey school, a classified "historical monument" since 1988. Visit the Abbey school and you'll be able to imagine was daily life look like in this very particular environment, renowned well beyond our borders for its innovative teaching techniques.

In the secret underground of the Black Moutain. The Causse Plateau is a unique archeological site in France thanks to the value, the rarity and the number of the remains discovered here. Located on the heights of Soreze, this plateau is riddled with more than 7000-meter-long of underground galleries, as the Calel cavern (caving site). You will find on the plateau educational panels, a viewing table and a picnic table. The point of view from the Fendeille rock, which dominates the plain, is in itself an experience well worth the visit. The pathway about the geological structure called "Secrets of the Causse in Soreze" will help you to discover this exceptionnal site. Belvedere on the Lauragais, oppidum, hiking, free flights... Big and small walkers will fall under its charm. This site, inhabited from prehistoric times until the 13th century, is the witness of people who were living here. Here at the south side, natural cavities with large porches were used as houses. Then, from the Neolithic period until the conquest of the Gaul, communities have be able to grow here thanks to the strategic position and good natural defence positions. On the road to Berniquaut, you will meet the "Peiro Ficada" located on the edge of the ancient crest road. This megalith may have been used as marker or as landmark in different times. This vertical flagstone is sometimes called "La Pierre des Fusillés" because of 86 hemispherical hollows which look like bullet holes on the surface. There are many unanswered questions about this stone, espacially about the reason why people have made these hollows. It is likely that the monument was respected and honoured because they were hosting some supernatural beings.
