The loop of freedom

Fantastic hike along the ridges of Banyuls, following the footsteps of those who fled France from 1940 to 1945 in search of freedom Departure from the Banyuls-sur-Mer Tourist Office. Go up Avenue du Général de Gaulle towards Puig del Mas, then cross the river "La Baillaury"  via the bridge. Continue on Avenue Pierre de Marca until you reach Place Abel Pages on the left. From the parking lot, continue towards the dirt track that leads to a path through the vineyards near Mas Guillaume. Continue on a paved road and turn left towards Col del Bast. At the pass, take the path that rises to the right and follow the trail for 500 meters. The trail follows the ridges of the massif. Pass under an electrical pylon and take the rocky path that crosses several scree slopes towards Col de Rumpissar at 538 meters above sea level. Turn left and take the path that ascends towards the Tour de Querroig at 672 meters above sea level, which offers you an exceptional 360° panorama. At "Col de Rumpissa", head towards Pla del Ras, "Col des Empedrats", "Col de Teixo", "Puig d'en Jorda" At "Col d'en Torn", turn right towards "Col de la Martina". At "Col de la Martina", descend onto the track that crosses Reg de la Roubine, then at the track junction, go straight, pass through a ford and another. There, the road becomes paved. Pass by "Mas Xatard". Arrival at the Aristide Maillol Museum.  Cross the property and take the paved road that crosses the river "la Ballaury". Turn right from the museum parking lot onto a narrow road. Continue on the road to "Col de Banyuls" then "avenue du Général de Gaulle". At the end, turn right towards the Tourist Office."

(E 12 - Coastal Path) From Banyuls to Port-Vendres

Breathtaking views and swimming Continue on the Anse de Fontaulé promenade, then climb the road on the sidewalks along the D 914. Continue to Elmes beach. Turn right and take the path that winds along the coast through ancient vineyards. Take the path on the left along the cliff towards Cape Ullastrell. Continue on the right. The path leads to the cliff. Turn left until the barrier in the bend and continue on the track which leads to the houses at Fourat. Join the second beach by an opening in the wall. Cross it and return to the coastal path. At the end of the beach turn left and pass under the iron bridge. Take immediately the path that goes up and continue the path inside the fences to go down towards Bernadi beach. Cross the stream bed. Cross the beach and walk along the wall to take the path on your right. Continue on the very steep path and cross several coves to arrive at the foot of Cap Béar. Take the asphalt road for a hundred meters to take the path on the right. It goes up towards the semaphore. At the top, cross the paved road and take the path opposite in the direction of Fort Béar. It will continue towards the lighthouse at the pier. At the bottom of the path, turn left and continue a few meters on the tarmac road. Turn right and take the path that goes around La Redoute de Mailly. Go back down and join the track on the right which arrives at rue de la Jetée. Continue on this street via the zebra crossing, turn right and continue on the tarmac track. Then take opposite and continue to the right on the sidewalks towards the city center. Bypass the ferry terminal on your left, continue on the Quai de la République then on the right the Quai François Joli until the tourist office.

"Discover tower, chapel, and defense system with breathtaking views." Starting from the Tourist Office, passing by the town hall, take a left onto General de Gaulle Avenue for 700m until reaching the Banyuls police station. Climb the stairs after the station and climb Cami Ramader, passing by the underground cellar and shortly after Mas Reig. Take the 'Cami de la Salette'; the slope is steep. You can already see the Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette Chapel (1863). The road turns into a trail after 50m. Once there, admire the landscape, the sea, Banyuls, and its hinterland. Depart behind the chapel, crossing a small cork oak forest. Walk along the ridge. To the right, admire the Vall Pompo valley, to the left, that of the town of Amont "After about 45 minutes, arrive at the Col des Gascons (386m). There, leave the marks of the GR10 on the left." Climb up to the fortification 'Batterie Taillefer' (1881) via a winding, narrow, and steep road. Arrive half an hour later at the foot of the Madeloc Tower (656m). Magnificent and emotionally moving viewpoint of beauty. To return to Banyuls, turn back and take the GR10 at the Col des Gascons, passing by the Fontaine des Chasseurs and then the orientation table at the Col de la Llagostera. Follow the GR10 back to Banyuls along the cork oak forest overlooking Vall Pompo and through the Col de Las Vinyes. Descend to the bridge under the railway. You have arrived in Banyuls (return to the Tourist Office).
