Discover Montreal, Aude, a jewel of Languedoc-Roussillon

This loop offers a wide range of landscapes: plateau, cypresses, vines, plane trees, forest path, oaks, weeping willows and as a reward a beautiful view of the Montagne Noire ! Signs: Yellow Start from the parking lot of the Town Hall. In front of the sign, turn left and follow the signs. At the level of the covered market, turn left. At the fork, in the middle of the latter, a small building contains the communal well of 1788 called "Fontaine Grande", which, with the help of a wind turbine dating from 1899, supplied the village with water. Turn right and do the same at the next fork. Always follow the tarred road that climbs up, lined with oaks, cypresses and acacias. Once on the plateau, on the right, you will see a cypress hedge along a vineyard, at the end of which you can admire a beautiful alley of plane trees leading to the agricultural estate of "Barthe". Then there is a junction with the forest road where we find plenty of oaks. After crossing the stream, some weeping willows signal the beginning of the wood, inhabited by jays, buzzards and surely some nocturnal birds of prey that nest there. By following the markings, the trail will take you through a succession of meandering hills and descents where tracks of wild boars are visible. Along a cultivated field, entering the wood, after 50m/160ft, turn left where a long descent is waiting for you. At the farm of "Cantaloup", turn right and 200m/650ft further down, turn right again at a small calvary, going along a dirt track between the crops towards the farm of "Béteille". In the village of Alairac, turn right on the road, pass the post office and after the communal hall (foyer) , turn right on the road to "Font Biello" (GR78). At the level of the Jouvénes stream, discover the old fountain of the village of Alairac. Going up 200m/650ft, in front of the small calvary, turn left, then pass in front of the domain of "Sévély". Just after, leave the road to take the stone path. On your right, the "Rougeats" estate and in the background, a breath-taking view of the Montagne Noire. Going straight ahead, cut the tarred road as well as the cypress hedge. At the end of the road, cross the small "stream of Saut", then the domain of the "Moulin de Madame" and there awaits you the square bell tower of the church of Arzens.

This trail goes down from the village into the Lampy valley, discovering the river and the leisure lake. Signs: Yellow markings Pass in front of the towers and then on the panoramic terrace in front of the town hall. You have the choice between the stairs on the left or the path straight ahead, you will end up at the same point! Cross the small road, go down the stairs opposite then join the parking lot on the other side of the D4 down the village. Go in the direction of the bridge and pass over it. On the outside of the bend, a variant of about 1.2km aller-retour will give you a very nice view of the village and the Pyrenees. Taking the bend, cross the road and take a track on the edge of the woods towards the banks of the Lampy. Further on, at the level of the footbridge, it is advised to you in summer time to follow the small loop in undergrowth which is very pleasant! On the way back, cross the river by the footbridge and turn right towards the lake by going around it. Cross the D34 in order to follow a small road going up slowly. You will then alternate tarred and earthy sections to reach the heart of the village.

Follow the old path that used to link the village to the abbey of Villelongue. Signs: Yellow markings The trail follows the old path that linked the village to the abbey and starts at the top of the village near the towers and medieval garden, at the foot of the Carsac stone. Take the small paved road to the left of the sign showing the three footpaths of Saint-Martin-le-Vieil. At the fork, leave the path "sentier des Capitelles" on the left , and carry on straight ahead. At the level of the vineyards, a marker will direct you to a path separating the different plots of land. This one will lead you through the vineyards and then, in the undergrowth, on a slightly sandy earth path. After a short hour's walk (half of the circuit), we arrive on the part of the path overlooking the abbey. We can then see the abbey, majestic, in its bosky bower. A visit of the abbey and the splendid garden is a must. For those who wish, a variant will take you to an old lime kiln.To reach it, cross the small bridge over the "La Vernassonne" and just after the last building on the left, take the path that climbs gently upwards: count one-hour round trip but it is worth it ! The return trip promises to be very pleasant; to do so, take the track starting from the parking lot and go along the edge of the wood. Then at the crossroads, turn right, make a small effort before reaching the plateau. The wooded part will be very nice in summer. When you reach the paved road, continue and then take the track on the right and, a little further on, a track on your right. During the descent at 50m on your right stands a “capitelle” (dry-stone hut) with as always, the doorway to the south.  As soon as you discover it, you will recognize the village and its two towers of the feudal castle, announcing you the end of the hike.

This trail offers an exceptional and varied flora, several holm oaks and wild flowers to admire. A waterfall and two viewpoints can also be found in this picturesque landscape Signs: Yellow and the orange circaète eagle From the sign in the village, take the D43 downhill.               After a turn on the right, turn left for 50m/164ft towards La Salle. Then take the earth track going up. At the top, turn left onto the small tarred road. Leave the road leading to La Salle on the right and follow the path.            At the crossroads of tracks, continue to the right in the direction of the crest line along the vineyard. Viewpoint on the left on Carcassonne and on the other side on the place called "Arnauteuille" and the village of Montclar further to the right. The vineyard gives way further on to a thicket of holm oaks. In the undergrowth, there is fragon and along the path these cistus, blue carnations of Montpellier (small blue flowers, thin and tall stems), sweet peas (pink and white. Pass in front of the magnificent holm oak (Auzina in Occitan) where wild boars rub to get rid of parasites. The traces of mud left by the animals are permanent on the trunk. Further on, turn right and go down. Take the small marked path, more pleasant than the previous one. The “asphalt grass” (its name comes from the smell it gives off when you crumple it) colonizes the edge of the path (opposite). Turn right at the crossroads, the path goes uphill and ends with a small steep slope leading you to the arboretum. At the very bottom, cross the brook and don't miss this small detour of 30 meters which leads you to a waterfall, a cool and humid place, colonized by horsetail and also occupied by a variety of fern, "le capillaire" (Maidenhair spleenwort). Take the path again and go up to the road D43, cross and turn left for about 120m/400ft. Take the upward path which leads to the Pech de Gabarre. At the junction with the track, turn right and follow this ridge overlooking the campsite. A nice view on the left, over Limoux and its tile factory (the big roof). The path climbs on the left quite abruptly, then descends steeply with, in the hollow, a muddy part. Continue on the highest path in the undergrowth. Strong rise on a gullied path.                At the highest point of the route, don't miss this little detour to the left which offers a panoramic view on the Pyrenees. Go back to the forest crossroads and go down the gravel track (steep descent) which runs along the lower part of the cereal crops where the harrier often flies.                 At the river, turn right. A steep ascent to the village. A drinking water tap is available in the parking lot on the other side of the road. After taking a breath, you will be able to walk through the streets of the circular village called "circulade".

Undergrowth and views of the Razès Signs : Yellow and Orange Circle From the sign in the village, go downhill on the D43. Just before leaving the village, turn right and go down "Chemin de la Martine". From here you can see the Arnauteille campsite. At the bottom, take the road again, cross the bridge where the stream "le Grand Rec" flows peacefully. Go past the entrance to the campsite Continue to the electric transformer and 250m after it, turn right. Gradually climb through a copse of oaks. The Montpellier rockrose occupies the edges of the path. Higher up, at the junction with the track, go right into the undergrowth. The ridge allows you to see on the left, Limoux and the long roof of the tile factory, as well as its vineyards. On the right of the path, the agricultural and livestock landscape. Slightly to the left is the village of Montclar. Further on, at the beginning of  the undergrowth, at the crossroads, turn right onto the small shady path which is very pleasant in summer. At the next crossroads turn right again and go down the track (steep slope). At the bottom of the fork, turn left and cross a small bridge. Immediately afterwards, turn right onto a nice gravel track until you reach a concrete bridge to cross the stream "Le Grand Rec" one last time. Then turn right onto the small road going up towards the village.

Sporty excursion where you will alternate between some rough climbs and pleasant passages in the woods at the shade of the oaks. The trail offers a multitude of landscapes: views of the vineyards, scrubland, hills, Pyrenees... Also enjoy the presence or traces of certain raptors and wild boars. Signs: Yellow markings and Orange Wild Boars From the sign in the village, continue up the D43 and drive past the parking lot. After leaving the village, at the fork, turn right uphill. Further on, leave the “Touloury” property on your right. On the plateau, you can breathe and admire on your right the Rouffiac and Preixan vineyards, then behind, the white vineyards of the plain and the Corbières in the background.  At the road, turn right: you enter an area of crop-livestock (cattle). At the "Boulbonne" farm, turn left. The residential buildings are protected from the sun by large lime trees.  Follow the fence on the left, this is a short climb. On the field on the left, the harrier St-Martin can often be seen (this grey raptor with black wingtips, flies like a glider at 2m from the ground to surprise field mice and voles). You may also see the lark, high in the sky, beating its wings very quickly and singing continuously. Very pleasant passage in the oak woods where you will enjoy this area of shade and coolness in summer.  Holm oaks and white oaks accompanied on the edge of the path by fragon (tall, very straight stem, small dark leaves, red balls). Cross the track which leads to "Lavax" and go up opposite. This path runs along the road D43 in the undergrowth. In wet weather, presence of wild boar tracks. Arriving on the road D43, take the track opposite and go down towards "Le Dégo". On the side of the road, notice the geraniums (pink-purple) and cistus (white). This area is often overflown by the circaetes whose cry will not leave you indifferent. Leave "Dégo" on the right and continue on the left.  This track was traced for the Forest Fire Defence. It is pleasant and in some places you can admire the view of the Pyrenees in the background and in front, a hill which shelters a private animal park.   50m after the junction leading to the property "La Soulette", there is a fork. Turn left onto a path descending through a coppice of oaks and strawberry trees. Leave the ruin (barely visible because it is covered with ivy) on the left and go straight ahead. It can be seen by the presence of cypress trees. Always go down the path.  Turn left to reach the brook. On the bank of the brook are two varieties of ferns including the scolopendre (long flat leaves). The path goes along the brook and by raising your head, you will see in this big dead trunk the holes of the woodpecker, the bird that gives the impression of making fun of us when he sings. The path goes up and crosses a rather high scrubland from where, in spring, the strong smell of broom is released. At the junction with the access path that leads to Bédounet, turn right and walk along the edge of the field on the grassy path that runs under the property. Observe the restored dovecote on the building and in the descent a view of the village of Montclar. The agriculture of the heights now gives way to the vineyards of the Malepère. On the right-hand side, you can see "Malfouich", a former agricultural property. The cypress hedge is quite typical of the crop protection against the wind. Once on the road, turn left and in the hollow, is built a stone building on which rests a rusty metal mechanism. It was the water point that the wind turbine was going up, later replaced by an engine that is now abandoned. Finally, a steep climb up to the village and at the crossroads, turn right.

The territory of the marsh harrier, the wild rabbit, the red partridge... amongst the capitelles (dry stone huts), remains of the pastoralism activity, overwhelmed by the natural scents... Signs: Yellow markings From the village, take the direction of the hamlet of Caunettes Hautes. At the bottom of the Côte de Regord, on your left, a picnic area indicates the start of the loop. Once in front of the sign, take the path going to the right and crossing the pine forest. At the end of this one, the plateau covered with garrigue appears, notched by fancy streams where thyme is omnipresent. Take the small wooden bridge which spans the brook of La Combe, progress in the middle of boxwoods, kermes oaks and junipers. Then the path crosses the D48, the yellow markings take you to the track on the right allowing you to discover the vineyard. At the road, turn left towards Caunettes-Hautes. At the entrance of the hamlet, turn left again and take the track in the centre of the big open area.  As you approach the first grove, the markings will direct you to the right, inviting you to follow the steep path. Return to the main track on the right and continue to discover the Combe Obscure (name of the stream) which cuts deeply into the limestone plateau and offers a viewpoint revealing the rocky bars of the domaine Bertrandou. Further on, after crossing the D48 again, at the crossroads of the tracks, turn left for 700m/0.4mi. On a clear day, the Pyrenees block the horizon behind the Malepère massif. Arriving at a crossroads of tracks with three possibilities, turn left as you go down South. You will pass through "Garouilles", boxwood, lavender and rosemary. Once in the pine forest where a last crossroads awaits you, the signpost will tell you to go left to find the picnic area.

An opportunity to discover an exceptionally varied flora and some of the most beautiful views on the Pyrenees and the Montagne Noire. Signs: Yellow markings The start of the trail is in the lower part of the village, route de Fraisse-Cabardès just at the entrance of the parking lot at the level of the signpost. Take the direction of the place called "L'Horte" along the cemetery. Go up in the direction of the Saint-Roch chapel (lectern, cross, viewpoint on the village). The path passes just below the chapel. You can reach it by a small picturesque path.  You will be able to appreciate the peaceful setting, the majestic trees and the stone benches. Come down from the chapel and continue the progression on the path to discover the capitelles (drystone huts) on both sides. The signs will guide you gently northwards in the middle of low vegetation and then gradually along the edge of the woods towards the west. When you arrive on the paved road, turn right then left at the intersection with the D148. Go down towards the village and from the first loops, before crossing a bridge, go down on the left on a very old path. It is quite steep for the first few metres, it winds through the "Combe Belle". Enjoy the beautiful section restored by a local resident. At the end of the road, you will find the D148 which brings you back to the starting point.

The diversity of Carcassonnes area landscape, between hills, plains and forests, has produced a wide variety of place names that give keys to deciphering history. The most frequent toponyms refer to geographical features, such as Laprade or Pradelles (the meadow) Lacombe (small valley), Pech Redon (round mountain). Names such as Borde Neuve (new farm), La Bouriette (small farm), Casalet (small house), La Farguette (small forge), l'Horte or hortal (the garden) reflect human activities. Other toponyms finally find their origin in nature (Vernède, Fraisse, Castans) or fauna (les Crabes, Canto Aoussel). Signs: Yellow markings Leave from the parking lot in front of the village grocery store. Reach the village centre and cross it by the main street. Turn left, rue Saint-Marc and go down to the bridge. Just after the bridge, turn right immediately onto the small service road along the brook. Join the road, go down and turn left; 50 meters further, turn right onto a small road. This road climbs gently up to the Ventaillole vineyards. Take the road on the left and go down to Deumier. At the fork in the road, turn right and go straight ahead. Go along the vineyards and reach a crossroads in the garrigue (point of connection with a hiking trail in the village of Aragon). Walk along a small path on the left, in the undergrowth, a capitella (drystone sheperds hut)  faces you on the old Raissac path. Leave the garrigue and at the crossroads, go opposite to the farm of Bourriette ("small farm", from the Occitan "borie": the farm). Just after the buildings, turn right and then left to go along the vineyards at the foot of Pech Saint-Jean (highest point of the Commune). Go down and cross a wooded coomb. Cross the bridge and turn left (ampelographic trail showing the vines and the different grape varieties). After 600m, reach a crossroads. Go down on the left through the vineyards (capitelle on the right, panorama on the village and beyond on the Cité of Carcassonne). Return to the village on the D38. Back in the centre, take some time to stroll through the narrow streets around the castle.

The waters of the Dure, loaded with shale, have the property of degreasing sheep's wool. Very early on, fulling mills were installed there: the wool was entirely processed here to be transformed into cloth. Signs: Yellow Markings Departure from the parking lot at the north exit of the village. Just after the Saint-Denis gate, take the D8 for 150m uphill. At the first fork in the road on the right, go past the farm "Bellevue". View of the Alzeau and Dure gorges and the village on its promontory. On the first part of the circuit, the paths leading to the various (private) mills follow one another. These took advantage of the driving force of the water to turn mill stones and other machines. The particular quality of the water of the Dure, which had the necessary properties for cleaning and wool degreasing, allowed the development of a textile industry. After crossing the hamlet of "Franc", cut the D8 and take the road opposite, the path heads west towards the Alzeau valley. You will enjoy the view of the Pyrenees. Arriving at the pig farm, turn left on the downhill path. 600 m further on, a fork on the right will make you join the Alzeau river by going down in the undergrowth. The river lost its mills in the 13th century when part of its water was captured to feed the Canal du Midi (gully of the Montagne Noire). Follow the river up to the bridge of "l'Isoule" dating from the 12th century: observe the two arches and the remarkable ferns on the nearby banks. Go back on the path for 100m, take the time to observe the traces of cart wheels in the stone and then turn right. Slight ascent in the shade of the vegetation then pass under a power line. At the crossroads with the track, continue straight ahead. Then quickly the markers will guide you back to the undergrowth, allowing you to discover a capitelle (dry stone hut). It is visible from a small layon on the left. When you get back to the main track, a little further on the right, a promontory with a view of the “Chateau de Villeneuve” and the gardens below. At the exit of the wood, a large open area with a breathtaking view over the Pyrenees; and back to the village of Montolieu.

A real architectural feat, the Vauban vault plays an essential role in transporting water to Lake Saint-Ferréol and the Canal du Midi. Pierre-Paul Riquet, having understood that only the capture of the waters of the Montagne Noire would allow his future canal to cross the highest point of the Naurouze threshold at 189m, had two feeder channels built: the Rigole de la Montagne and the Rigole de la Plaine. The Rigole de la Montagne leads to Les Cammazes. Beginning its journey at the Prise d'Alzeau, the Rigole de la Montagne criss-crosses the forest to Le Conquet in the initial construction of Riquet. It was Vauban who a few years later had the Rigole de la Montagne continued as far as Les Cammazes and had the 123m long aqueduct drilled, allowing the Rigole to flow into the Laudot to reach Lake Saint-Ferréol.
