Uncover the gems of Augny, Moselle, Lorraine

Some twenty enthusiasts work on the 60 hectares of a terroir that has been brought up to date over the last few decades and is divided into three bastions, around Metz, Sierck-les-Bains and Vic-sur-Seille. The vines are located on the sunny slopes of the main valleys, protected from the cold and the wind, and produce AOC Moselle wines, mainly white, but also reds and rosés. The Moselle Wine Route around Metz is accessible by motorway A31, exit 29, follow Fey. To discover the winegrowers of the Saulnois, go directly to Vic-sur-Seille.

Between the 14th and 16th centuries, a climate of insecurity reigned on the banks of the Moselle and the Seille due to the many conflicts between the Republic of Metz and the Duchies of Lorraine and Bar, each of which tried to claim this rich land for its own. At the centre of old winegrowing villages clinging to the hillsides, fortified churches that were used as defensive structures bear witness to the insecurity of bygone days. The church in Sillegny is an example of this: Erected in the 15th century, it contains some remarkable frescoes, perfectly preserved. This circuit at the gates of Metz, between the slopes of the Moselle and the valley of the Seille, is a skilful blend of history, the local area and modernity.

On the right bank of the Moselle valley, Jouy-aux-Arches and Corny-sur-Moselle occupy a favoured location. Jouy-aux-Arches is known for its impressive aqueduct, built by the Gallo-Romans to carry drinking water from the springs of Gorze to Metz, a distance of 22 km.

On the left bank of the Moselle, Ancy-sur-Moselle and Novéant-sur-Moselle are excellent starting points for hikes. The village of Dornot, perched on the heights, is characteristic of the wine-making villages on these slopes, with its narrow, twisting streets offering beautiful views over the Moselle valley.

The GR5 hiking route links the North Sea to the Mediterranean. It enters France in Mondorff. This second stage takes hikers from the Côtes de Moselle hills to the Pays des Etangs lakes of Dieuze.

The village of Arry, perched on the heights of the Côtes de Moselle hills, offers breathtaking views over the Moselle valley and the Lorraine plateau. This special site favours the development of plant and animal life characteristic of chalk grassland.

This tour, starting in Sillegny, is an invitation to explore the surroundings of this charming village on the banks of the Seille, famous for its church known as the "Sixtine of the Seille". A veritable treasure trove, its tempera murals date from the 15th and 16th centuries. Long hidden by whitewash, they were discovered on 8 May 1845 by Abbé Schnabel, parish priest from 1840 to 1891, and restored by the painter Charles-André Malardot.

This rural trail takes in the 15th-century choir of Saint-Luc church and the former railway line between Metz and Château-Salins.

This mountain bike/cycling route is ideal for families to discover the south of Metz, between the Seille and Bois de l'Hôpital. Most of the route is on its own site and you will ride quietly through woods and meadows using old railway tracks or former military roads, which have now been converted for leisure activities.

The 1870 battlefields are found on the "back" of the plateau, which opens up to the west towards the Côtes de Meuse hills. Along the paths you will come across many monuments erected in memory of the soldiers and a variety of educational and fun activities.

Museum Gaspar is housed in the residence of the middle-class family Gaspar from Arlon who had set up in this house (1893) that was built in 1842. It was renovated in 2004. The two most famous members of this family are animal sculptor Jean-Marie Gaspar (1861-1931) and Charles Gaspar (1971-1950) who was a photographer and a sponsor. He gave his house to the town of Arlon on the condition they make a museum of it, dedicated to his brother's work and that put into honour the history and the heritage of Arlon. At the first floor, theree are two restored salons identical to a middle-class salon from the early 20th century that show Jean-Marie Gaspar's sculptures. and the art and picture collection of Charles Gaspar. The rest of the first floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions of the museum that alternates artv and history. A religion room shows collections about the abbey of Orval and to the people's devotion at the 18th century, and also relics from the ancient Saint-Martin church. But the Masterpiece is the famous altarpiece Retable de Fisenne - a 16th century masterpiece from the Antwerp school. It was bought in 1893 by a middle-class family from Arlon, the family Gaspar. Jean Gaspar (1861-1931) was a sculptor. He was trained by the Antwerp sculptor Jef Lambeaux. His works are in bronze and in plaster and they are exhibited in the salons that have been restorated as they were in his house. His brother Charles (1871-1950) was a photographer, a collector and a sponsor. He gave this house to the town of Arlon. It hosts the library of the Archaeological Institute of the Belgian Province of Luxembourg and its secretary office since 1954. A wide part of the museum is also dedicated to temporary exhibitions about art and history of Arlon.

Rich in the Gallo-Roman past of Arlon, the museum houses an impressive collection that bears witness to the daily life of this period.One of the peculiarities of the museum is its imposing and rich lapidary collection, composed of several dozen fragments of ancient funerary monuments.These blocks and the objects from Roman craftsmanship will teach you more about daily life at that time.

Created in 1830 by the Simon family in the English style of the 19th century. The park offers visitors a path full of surprises and contrasting approaches, with century-old trees and contemporary elements, there's something for all the family.

The monument, with a length of 1128 metres, links the two banks of the Moselle and had 110 columns that were, for the highest, 25 metres high. It only was the air part of a 22 km-pipes transporting the water from Gorze to the thermal baths and fountains of Metz. It dates back to the 2nd century AD. The monument is one of the best preserved of the Western Roman Empire. Formerly known as the "Pont du Diable" ("The Devil's Bridge") by the inhabitants, the monument has been restored several times since 1837.

22 km Roman aqueduct linking the Bouillons de GORZE spring to the city of METZ, built around the beginning of the 2nd century. Classified as a Historic Monument since 1840. The Aqueduct is the 3rd largest in Europe. The ancient city of DIVODURUM (METZ), with a population of 20,000, needed spring water to supply fountains, thermal baths and latrines. This aqueduct rises from an altitude of 208m to 184m. It comprises 12.7 km of underground passage, an arcaded bridge visible at ARS-SUR-MOSELLE and JOUY-AUX-ARCHES, and a further 8 km of underground passage. Of the original 110 piers, only 17 remain connected by arches. These remains constitute one of the most spectacular structures of this type in France.

At Robert Bikes, the bicycle is not just considered as a leisure activity. It is conceived as a real alternative to the car for short daily trips. The Longtail electric cargo bike, modular and durable, has a load capacity of 100 kg on the luggage rack and is the first cargo bike made in Moselle!

The Parc aux Trois Nationalités is a space for observing and appropriating a territory through its landscapes and history. It's a cultural beacon, with exhibitions on the Lorraine border, American history, the Liberation and the pilot Robert Hewins Stiles. It's a place for interpreting human activities and local governance, as well as for reclaiming flowers and shrubs. It is also an open-air teaching aid and an online educational resource. 20 km south of Metz, the Lorry and Mardigny coasts are home to an exceptional group of calcareous orchid lawns, over 100 hectares in size and maintained by sheep grazing. Mardigny church dates back to the 12th century, but was extensively modified in the 19th century. The original Romanesque bell tower and narthex were listed in July 1997. Set back from the village, it dominates it like many other Romanesque churches in Lorraine. For many years, it was an annex of the Lorry parish church. Until the French Revolution, therefore, it was not possible to celebrate baptisms, marriages or funerals here. Originally, it was a single-nave church, with the choir facing east. The church was entered through a door in the south wall, opening onto a narthex. This narthex, or avant-nef, was separated from the nave by three arches, still visible today. The central arch rests on two round pillars with cubic capitals and claw bases, known to have been used in Lorraine and Alsace in the early 12th century. The central square of the narthex, bordered by these two columns and cross-vaulted, supports the bell tower, which is steeply inclined to the west despite a powerful buttress. It is now used as a sacristy.

With its neo-Roman architecture, the Protestant temple features a wooden barrel vault and stained glass windows dating from 1949, inspired by Dürer's Christ aux outrages, created by the Simminger workshops in Montigny-lès-Metz.

Surrounded by its cemetery, it comprises three naves built at different times. The 12th-century Romanesque edifice comprises a central nave, a cross-vaulted apse adorned with an arcature from Lorraine, and a square tower. This ensemble was extended in the 13th century with the addition of a north aisle, into which the door with its three-lobed tympanum opens. From the 14th to 16th centuries, the church was fortified by the addition of a circular dungeon-tower, then by raising the whole building to provide a refuge floor. Numerous defensive features are still visible, including the bretèche, archères, cannonières and watch windows. The third nave was built in neo-Romanesque style in 1895. Inside, the poorly preserved 16th-century frescoes were replaced by a new program painted in 1902. The Link organ, installed in 1910, was restored in 2004.
