Aqueduc romain à Ars-sur-Moselle
Credit : TE / Agence Inspire Metz

Description

22 km Roman aqueduct linking the Bouillons de GORZE spring to the city of METZ, built around the beginning of the 2nd century. Classified as a Historic Monument since 1840.
The Aqueduct is the 3rd largest in Europe.
The ancient city of DIVODURUM (METZ), with a population of 20,000, needed spring water to supply fountains, thermal baths and latrines.
This aqueduct rises from an altitude of 208m to 184m. It comprises 12.7 km of underground passage, an arcaded bridge visible at ARS-SUR-MOSELLE and JOUY-AUX-ARCHES, and a further 8 km of underground passage.
Of the original 110 piers, only 17 remain connected by arches. These remains constitute one of the most spectacular structures of this type in France.
