Arraye-et-Han: cultural and natural gems

The Côte de Delme Regional Nature Reserve covers almost 100 hectares. From the top of its 403 metres, it offers a superb panorama of the Saulnois and the Nied. This sunny hillock has a dry and poor soil, rather typical of the Mediterranean basin, with a specific fauna and flora. The discovery tour on the summit will give you all the explanations you need to understand these exceptional environments.

Delme, or "Ad duodecimum" in Roman, means "twelve Roman milestones from Metz" in the direction of Strasbourg. After passing through the centre of Delme, you will admire the architecture of its contemporary art centre and its reception area, La Gue(host)hous. Following the old Roman road, you will rise to Puzieux where you will continue your tour towards the Notre-Dame de la Pitié chapel. And it is on the old railway line that you will return to your starting point.

This route is a real lesson in geography and botany. The typical coastal relief of the region takes on its full meaning here. The views of the nearby Moselle coast will accompany you throughout the walk, while the Delme coast, a massive mound, will surprise you with the richness of its orchid lawns. An interpretation trail and orientation tables will help you to understand its landscapes and to appreciate the rare and fragile flora found there. The charming typical villages of the Saulnois region and the small quiet roads you will take will make you appreciate this charming region far from the hustle and bustle of the big cities.

From the plateau, you follow the old Route de France, which was ceded to the king in 1661 by the Treaty of Vincennes. At that time, the Duke of Lorraine granted a passage through his duchy to the royal troops heading for Alsace, which had become French since the end of the Thirty Years' War. This road, also called the Queen's Road, recalls the sumptuous journey of Queen Marie Leszczinska. She crossed Lorraine to join, in Fontainebleau, the young Louis XV who was married by proxy on 15 August 1725.

Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, this walk will introduce you to three villages in southern Messin that have managed to preserve their heritage and environment. You'll see traces of farming practices from days gone by, such as the Vulmont égayoir, used to bathe draught horses, and the millstone of the old Foville oil mill. Religious heritage enthusiasts will love the 18th-century church of Sailly-Achâtel, whose paintings are listed as Historic Monuments.

It is the highest point of the hiking trails in southern Metz, offering a 360° panorama at an altitude of 378 metres. The northern part of the Delme hill forms the watershed between the Seille river basin to the west and the Nied Française to the east, where one of its tributaries, the Elme, rises and drains the farmland of Thimonville and Tragny.

This tourist circuit showcases water through the ages on a tour of Haut-Lay and its history. Lay-Saint-Christophe is nicknamed the village of a thousand fountains. It is also the birthplace of Saint Arnou and his illustrious descendants. Explore the ancient narrow streets to discover a host of fountains and admire the Renaissance (the Samaritaine, the presbytery, the priory whose most famous monk was Dom Calmet, etc.) and Art Nouveau buildings (the house of Antonin Daum). A fascinating tour!

Explore this walking and cycling path, a bucolic 19.5-km-long stabilised sand route created along a former railway. It begins in Custines at the end of the Rue Claude Le Lorrain cul-de-sac, which has around twenty parking spaces, and currently ends in Nomeny. It runs through the lovely Mauchère valley, which takes its name from the little 8-km-long stream that runs through Custines, Malleloy, Faulx and Montenoy. The rolling countryside offers viewpoints over the orchards, fields, villages and woods. This “Voie Verte” path takes you on a discovery tour of local rural animals, including sheep, cows and horses. In fact, there is a strong probability that you will come across riders on the section that is open to them, near to the Diapason and Paquis stables in Faux.

The Moselle rises in the Vosges mountains at the Col de Bussang, but is actually the result of the merger of several streams originating in the Vosges mountains. It flows into the Rhine at Koblenz in Germany. Its total length is 560 kilometers, of which 314 kilometers are in France. The Moselle has been used as a waterway since Gallo-Roman times, enabling Roman battles against the Celts and the transport of salt produced in the Seille region. Throughout the Middle Ages, navigation was in full swing. Then, in the 16th and 17th centuries, navigation on the Moselle disappeared. At most, it was used to float timber from the Vosges. Today, the Moselle is a busy commercial river, particularly between Frouard and Luxembourg. Yachting harbors and secondary branches, however, provide shelter from the traffic. On the outskirts of Nancy, the landscape of wooded hills is very pleasant.

Resolutely rural in character, this route offers vast panoramic views over the farmland where the Bérupt stream meanders. The historic and religious heritage stands out, with no fewer than four religious buildings and a ruined castle.

Museum Gaspar is housed in the residence of the middle-class family Gaspar from Arlon who had set up in this house (1893) that was built in 1842. It was renovated in 2004. The two most famous members of this family are animal sculptor Jean-Marie Gaspar (1861-1931) and Charles Gaspar (1971-1950) who was a photographer and a sponsor. He gave his house to the town of Arlon on the condition they make a museum of it, dedicated to his brother's work and that put into honour the history and the heritage of Arlon. At the first floor, theree are two restored salons identical to a middle-class salon from the early 20th century that show Jean-Marie Gaspar's sculptures. and the art and picture collection of Charles Gaspar. The rest of the first floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions of the museum that alternates artv and history. A religion room shows collections about the abbey of Orval and to the people's devotion at the 18th century, and also relics from the ancient Saint-Martin church. But the Masterpiece is the famous altarpiece Retable de Fisenne - a 16th century masterpiece from the Antwerp school. It was bought in 1893 by a middle-class family from Arlon, the family Gaspar. Jean Gaspar (1861-1931) was a sculptor. He was trained by the Antwerp sculptor Jef Lambeaux. His works are in bronze and in plaster and they are exhibited in the salons that have been restorated as they were in his house. His brother Charles (1871-1950) was a photographer, a collector and a sponsor. He gave this house to the town of Arlon. It hosts the library of the Archaeological Institute of the Belgian Province of Luxembourg and its secretary office since 1954. A wide part of the museum is also dedicated to temporary exhibitions about art and history of Arlon.

Rich in the Gallo-Roman past of Arlon, the museum houses an impressive collection that bears witness to the daily life of this period.One of the peculiarities of the museum is its imposing and rich lapidary collection, composed of several dozen fragments of ancient funerary monuments.These blocks and the objects from Roman craftsmanship will teach you more about daily life at that time.

Montenoy, the easternmost commune of the Communauté de Communes du Bassin de Pompey, is part of the canton of Nomeny, and covers a small area of 398 hectares, half of which is forested. The forest overlooks the village on the hills to the north and south. These hills are part of the Grand Couronné de Nancy. The Côte Savrony, behind you, is the highest point of the Grand Couronné (418m). The commune lies upstream of the Mauchère valley, a small river that rises in Montenoy and flows into the Moselle at Custines. Montenoy's population has grown from 160 in the 1950s to around 420 today. The population, which became very working-class with the development of the Pompey steelworks, has changed considerably since its decline and closure in the 1980s. Its inhabitants now work mainly in the Pompey area and in Nancy. Since 1975, there has been just one farm based in the village. Since 1990, this farm has practiced organic farming. The path on your left, which crosses the valley from side to side, is on the watershed between the Seille valley (left) and the Moselle valley.

The old town of Nomeny was the property of the bishops of Metz until the mid-16th century. The fortifications remained until the 17th century. Built between 1335 and 1365, its ramparts were destroyed on Richelieu's orders. Its Romanesque fortress (11th century) and its Gothic castle (14th century) were destroyed on Louis XIV's orders. Of the fortress that once existed, only remain the relics of three towers, three curtain walls between two bastions, two fortress moats and the cobblestones of the castle courtyard. The old town of Nomeny was the property of the bishop of Metz until mid-16th century and was fortified until the 17th century. Built between 1335 and 1365, its ramparts were destroyed on Richelieu's orders. Its Romanesque fortress (11th century) and its Gothic castle (14th century) were destroyed on Louis XIV's orders. Of the fortress that once existed, only remain the relics of three towers, three curtain walls between two bastions, two ditches of the fortress and the cobblestones of the castle courtyard. They are maintained by the Lorraine Heritage association of Seille and by the city of Nomeny. Free access. The chancel, chancel front, bell tower, and two lateral chapels of the church were built in the second half of the 12th century (Historical Monuments). They were built in the Romanesque period with cross rib vaulted. The Gothic nave and lateral chapels were converted into naves when the walls were opened in the 14th and 15th centuries. Its statuary (Inventory of Historical Monuments) was built in the second half of the 15th century. Thanks to its remarkable acoustic, an annual musical season is organized for the heritage restoration of the forgotten music of the ducal and “évêchoise” Lorraine (belonged to the political territory of one of the Three Dioceses: Metz, Toul, and Verdun).

Located opposite the Tayes lookout on the heights of Faulx, a village with a population of 1,344, "Les Saulières" proved to be a strategic location during the 1939-1945 war. The German army requisitioned workers from the Pompey factory to cut wood and build shelters to store shells. From there, an artillery post aimed at enemy troops deployed in the Moselle department. The view of the village from the heights is exceptional. On a clear day, you can see not only the Moselle valley, but also the Brabois hill and Mont Saint Michel above Toul. 54% of this 1,720-hectare area is in natural zones and 42% in agricultural zones, including the many apple and mirabelle orchards for which the village is famous. Beech trees have given the village its name: Fagorum Vallis from Fagus, meaning the valley of beech trees. The village comprises Basse and Haute Faulx: it is located in the valley of the Mauchère, the name of the stream that runs through the village and leaves it with a magnificent waterfall on the west side. On this slope, at the edge of the Rumont forest, lie 2 springs that supply the village with drinking water: "la Fontaine bénite" and "La Couleuvre".

Phlin’s washing-place is a very beautiful 19th-century structure with contemporary work of art. Must be seen.

Located opposite the Saulières lookout on the heights of Faulx, a village of 1,344 inhabitants, this place is called "Les Tayes" by analogy with an envelope (or sack) that recalls the shape of the commune's 1,720-hectare territory. The many woods are made up of a variety of tree species, but the vast majority are beech. The beech trees have given their name to the village: Fagorum Vallis from Fagus, meaning the valley of the beech trees. From here, you can distinguish the Basse and Haute Faulx and admire the Mauchère valley, the name of the stream that runs through the village and leaves it with a magnificent waterfall on the west side. In the past, a railroad line linked the old Jeandelaincourt tileworks to the Pompey factory. Today, it has become a Voie Verte, a footpath. Near this viewpoint, in Chavenois, you'll find the entrance to an 800-meter-long tunnel linking the Faulx mine to Lay-Saint-Christophe. On this slope lie 2 springs that supply the village with drinking water: "la Fontaine des sangliers" and "la source du Merquenard".

Rising on the heights of Montenoy, the Mauchère, a small stream about 10 km long, calm in summer, sometimes violent in winter, follows the course of the valley, passing through Montenoy, Faulx, Malleloy and Custines, where several mills were built, including one at Faulx, on the edge of the waterfall.

12th-century old Priory founded by the abbey of Sainte-Marie-aux-Bois (Order of the Prémontrés), the small church (Historical Monuments) comprises a row of chancel and an apse of pure Romanesque architecture. The crypt, restored in 1956, also deserves attention; keys on request at Mr Dominger's house (30meters). Open for Heritage Day.
