This 28-km long (17 miles) walking trail in the countryside, linking the Departments of the Eure and the Eure-et-Loir, has been developed along a former railway line that used to link Dreux to Pacy-sur-Eure. From Saint-Georges-Motel to Breuilpont, via the pretty little towns of Marcilly-sur-Eure, Croth, Ezy-sur-Eure and Ivry-la-Bataille, have a look at treasures Norman history featured along the river and its valley. Thanks to the Eure Valley Greenway, enjoy the charms of the river Eure that gave its name to our wonderful Department.

This trail offers a glimpse of the GR22 hiking trail that links Paris to the Mont-St-Michel and allows visitors to enjoy the joys of nature at the beginning of spring. From the bottom of the Avre valley, supplied by its tributary, the Meuvette, walkers get to the wooded hillsides - listed for the diversity of species found there - and admire the wet meadows. This watery landscape also gives pride of place to heritage sites.

Nestled at the bottom of the Eure valley, known for its ecological diversity and its mild southern climate, the village of Marcilly-sur-Eure will show you, along the walk, all its charms and features: forest, streams and rural heritage sites.

All along this walk, you will go through fertile farmland dotted with ponds and peaceful hamlets. The walking trail, which goes around the Domaine d’Hellenvilliers, allows you to admire the park and the manor house, whose origin goes back to the 9th century and where Henry IV of France stayed before the battle of Ivry.

The Three Forest Trail immerses hikers in the forest's fresh air and environment, thanks to a walk all across the forest of Ivry-la-Bataille and across the forest of Moulinardes on the way back. Along the way, the neighbouring villages reveal themselves…

The splendid setting of the Domaine de Chambray (listed Historic Monument) provides a wide open space ideal for walks. A beautiful and bountiful nature has grown on the banks of the river Iton listed a "Sensitive Natural Area". This walk invites you to immerse yourself in nature and learn about the fauna and flora found in wetlands thanks to 15 information panels.

In the Pays d'Avre, d'Eure et d'Iton, the 9-km long (5 miles) Greenway Les Bois Francs provides relaxation for both the mind and the body. Rural landscapes, sweet and fresh undergrowth, traces testifying to the Roman or Norman histories, visit of Verneuil-sur-Avre, a former fortified city located on the border of the Duchy of Normandy and the Kingdom of France, etc.: this walk takes you to experience art, history and nature.

Coulonges comes from the Latin "coloniae" which means a territory inhabited by Roman settlers. Indeed, the Romans used hydraulic power to turn their millstones. This is why they settled in this area, supplied by the river Iton, and built watermills. Later, at the time of medieval lords, Coulonges became part of the big Domaine d'Hellenvilliers, thus allowing the construction of churches and castles. A charming walk by the water and in the hamlets of Sacq and Sylvains-les-Moulins, which will show you the charm of their beautiful country houses and their unspoilt landscapes.

The river Iton, which is 132 kilometres long (82 miles) and meanders in a pleasant valley bordered by woods, plains and forests, offers in turn wide open spaces with scenic views and wild tight areas. Its subtle meanders draw the course of a trickling, dawdling, spurting, springing and shining water that used to keep the former watermills going.

A haven of peace at the bottom of the valley, visitors enjoy Villalet for its tranquillity and its intimate landscapes. The trail follows the footsteps of carters, called "Rouliers" in French, a term that described the man and its cart pulled by horses. You might have unexpected encounters: horse riders, startled deer behind a grove, etc.

The Grand Trianon was designed in 1687 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart to allow King Louis XIV to escape the excessive luxury of the Court and to safeguard his love affairs there. The site indeed exudes a sense of intimacy and refinement. The palace is inspired by Italian architecture and invites you to poetry and leisurely strolls. It was built on the site of Louis XIV’s former Porcelain Trianon. A little fun fact: in the past, the Grand Trianon was surrounded by thousands of potted flowers, which were changed every day. Today, this tradition is still maintained with each season. The spectacle was truly unique: flowerbeds bursting with blooms of every color and a wide variety of fragrances filled the air. Later on, the Grand Trianon was frequented by Napoleon Bonaparte and by Presidents of the Republic. From 1962 to 1966, General de Gaulle entrusted André Malraux, then Minister of Cultural Affairs, with the restoration of the Grand Trianon.

The Petit Trianon was built between 1763 and 1768 by the architect Gabriel, requested by Madame de Pompadour, mistress then friend of king Louis XV. Madame de Pompadour, who wished to “relieve the king’s boredom” — though no longer his mistress, she remained his friend — was the instigator of this small château, built by architect Gabriel between 1763 and 1768. It was erected near the Botanical Garden and the new menagerie, as Louis XV had a keen interest in the sciences. To please the marquise, always at the forefront of fashion, the king’s architect broke away from the rococo aesthetic and adopted a cubic form with very pure lines, in keeping with the brand-new “Greek style” then in vogue. Its simplicity is only apparent, for each façade is different, designed in relation to the space it overlooks: the courtyard, the French Garden with its elegant pavilion, the Botanical Garden, and the Florist’s Garden. Inside, one finds the same modernity of style. Simpler than the rest of the estate, the decoration of the Petit Trianon lies not in lavish materials — gilding is almost absent — but in the refinement of its sculptures, in a château entirely dedicated to nature. Madame de Pompadour died in 1764 and never saw the château completed. Today, it is above all the memory of Marie-Antoinette that it evokes. In 1774, Louis XVI gave the Trianon estate to his wife, who was able to live here a life apart — too much so for some — from the Court.

Just a stone’s throw from the Palace, this iconic site was the stage of the Tennis Court Oath, where 578 deputies of the Estates-General swore not to separate until they had given France a constitution. It was here that the French Revolution began. Come and discover one of the key landmarks of the French Revolution: the Salle du Jeu de Paume. Built in 1686 to entertain the court, this hall dedicated to jeu de paume—the ancestor of tennis—is today famous for having witnessed a historic turning point: the Tennis Court Oath. On June 20, 1789, 578 deputies of the Estates-General proclaimed themselves the National Assembly and swore not to separate until they had given France a constitution. The idea of replacing the Salle du Jeu de Paume with a commemorative monument dates back to the Revolution, but no project was carried out until 1880, when the hall was transformed into a museum to mark the centenary of this decisive event.

Nonancourt was fortified shortly before Verneuil-sur-Avre by Henry Beauclerc circa 1112. 700 years ago, a powerful fortress flanked by 14 towers stood there. During your visit have a look at Saint Martin's Church and its stained-glass windows, listed a Historic Monument in 1975. The Norman half-timbered houses, the remains of the 12th century fortification wall, and walks along the water constitute Nonancourt's heritage. During the 19th century, this town was considered as a "centre of the textile activity" with its cotton and wool spinning mills.

Between Evreux and Dreux, visit the war cemetery where are buried 19,794 German soldiers who were killed in Normandy during the Second World War. The cemetery was mainly built when the Allied troops moved towards Paris and the river Seine. The American Graves Registration Service had its soldiers buried there as well as German soldiers. A contemporary chapel was built in 1964 and a hall provides historical explanations.

In the Norman capital of combs, uncover the amazing history of an exceptional know-how. Comb making has been Ezy's main industry for centuries. Its combs were renowned throughout the world for their quality and their sophistication. Fashion designers and hairdressers from Paris used to come and visit the factory. The museum was set up in a factory that closed down in 1984. The former workshop showcases the unique skill of the comb makers of Ezy. The manor house holds a collection of rare combs and headdresses: lice comb, moustache comb, combs belonging to Paco Rabanne, Jacques Dessange, etc., combs made of tortoise-shell, ivory, horn, etc. Peasants in Ezy have made combs in winter as early as the 17th century. First using boxwood, then using horse hoof and cow horn. They worked 12 to 14 hours a day and produced about 12 combs per day, which they sold in Paris.

30 kilometers from Evreux, discover some 50 rare plant species. In the south-east of the Eure department lies the botanical trail at Ezy-sur-Eure, one of Haute-Normandie's major natural sites. Long ignored by naturalists, it now reveals, on the chalky slopes of the Côte Blanche d'Ezy, some fifty rare, rare or endangered plant species, alongside equally exceptional butterflies and insects. Placed at the foot of the trees, the Office National des Forêts panels and desks enable visitors to discover some astonishing species: rare orchids, green lizards, endemic crickets...

If you are looking for an unusual place to visit, Calvados Morin is the place to go in Ivry-la-Bataille. Calvados Morin is one of the oldest calvados producers, renowned throughout the world and specialized in the blending and ageing of up-market Calvados. The tour, guided by the cellar masters, starts with a little bit of history about the industry and a presentation of Calvados. You will then get to the originality of the place: troglodytic cellars hollowed out of the hillsides of the Eure Valley where hundreds of casks are stocked. A unique setting in Normandy, ideal for Calvados and alcohol ageing. After the tour that lasts about 1 hour, time for a tasting session with the cellar master.

The Donjon de Houdan is a 12th-century tower commissioned by the Counts of Montfort. This historic monument is also a cultural venue, offering exhibitions, concerts... The Tower (commonly known as ‘Le Donjon’), built in the 12th century under the reign of the Counts of Montfort, and listed as a Historic Monument since 1889, was designed to watch out for enemies and defend the territory. But in reality, its main role was to act as a deterrent, as it was reputed to be impregnable. Built on the site of an ancient Merovingian necropolis, it originally consisted of an enclosure and a master tower. The enclosure, which has now disappeared, was fitted with a circular turret to defend the gateway. The access door -via a drawbridge-, initially situated 4 metres above ground level and then raised to 6 metres in the 15th century, was the only access to the large room on the 1st floor reserved for the military chief. Sometimes associated with the Duchy of Brittany and sometimes with the crown of France, Le Donjon was given by Louis XIV, with the county of Montfort, to the Duke of Luynes. The latter sold it in 1800 to an innkeeper from Houdan, citizen Leroy. Successively owned by various familie, the place was bequeathed by the latter to the town of Houdan in 1903. It presents traces of its history through its numerous graffiti, some dating from the 17th century. Used as a reserve, then as a prison and later a water tower, it underwent a certain number of changes in order to adapt to its new functions. The water tower, whose first metal tank was installed in 1880, was functional until the 1950s. In 1952, a new, more solid concrete tank was built. The tank is still present to this day, as well as part of the concrete uprights used to support it. Le Donjon consists of a tower 15 m in diameter and 25 m high, flanked by 4 turrets of the same height located at the four cardinal points. MONUMENTAL WORKS Like any historical monument requiring renovation, the work on the dungeon was difficult and complicated due to the historical, architectural aspect and the planning constraints of the monument. No less than 3 and a half years of work were necessary to allow the site to regain a second lease of life and to be able to welcome the many visitors, curious to discover or rediscover this flagship monument of the Houdan landscape. From now on, young and old will be able to explore the dungeon from bottom to top!

Since its opening, the Wind Instruments Museum (the MIV) preserves, promotes and keeps alive the memory of the instrument makers, companies, men and women who have worked in the region. Created in 1888 by the village's wind instrument makers, the MIV displays an exceptional collection of flutes, oboes and clarinets from the 18th century to nowadays. Workshops, machines and tools that have been used to make music instruments present the art of wind instrument making that has been perpetuated in La Couture-Boussey since the 17th century. To learn more about it, themed tours, encounters with musicians and instrument makers as well as live music events are organised all year round.

In Ivry-la-Bataille can be seen the remains of one of the first stone castles built in Normandy circa 1000 AD. When you visit the ruins you can imagine the size of the fortress and the magnitude of the keep that testify to the strategic importance Ivry had for centuries. Ivry's name evolved into Ivry-la-Bataille after the battle of 1590 won by Henry IV of France against the Duke of Mayenne. A pleasant walk provides a view over the town and the Eure river dotted with watermills and waterworks that remind us of the important industrial past. Along the streets with evocative names, "rue des belles femmes" (pretty women's street), "rue de la porte à bateaux" (boats' door street), or the "rue de la prison" (Jail street), admire Norman half-timbered houses and take a look at the door of the former abbey. Overlooking the Eure valley, the castle of Ivry was one of the first stone castles built in Normandy and is said to have been used as a model for the Tower of London. Due to its imposing and strategic position at the border, and with its "huge and well-fortified tower", it has been at stake in feudal wars for several centuries, but also in battles between the Duchy of Normandy and the Capetian kings. The ruins of this Norman castle have been turned into a pleasant walk overlooking the Eure valley.
