It is 10 years since an urban perimeter of 1810 hectares in central Bordeaux has enjoyed recognition by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. This area takes in almost all of the city centre as the “Port de la Lune” (Port of the Moon). The Tourist Office offers routes around the city to help you discover the ambience and the main monuments of Bordeaux at your own pace.

Some 1810 hectares of the city of Bordeaux were listed as a unesco World Heritage site on 28th June 2007.This remarkably large area encompasses almost the whole of the city inside the outer boulevards, including the "Port of the Moon" (so called because of the crescent shape formed by a bend in the Garonne) and the opposite riverbank.

From the Pont de Pierre to the Jacques Chaban Delmas Bridge, from the oldest crossing of the Garonne to the most recent, this loop will take you on a journey through time, from the historic facades of the 18th century to the most modern developments of the city, such as the Cité du Vin. The whole area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a guarantee of a magnificent walk in the heart of the historic centre of the city. The north wing, undergoing a complete renovation from 2011-2013, is a chance to get to know, if you don’t already, the great Bordeaux artists. Rosa Bonheur, Odilon Redon, Albert Marquet, André Lhote and Tobeen made their mark on the main artistic trends in the 19th and 20th centuries. Opposite the museum, the Gallery of Fine Art completes the permanent collection by regularly hosting temporary exhibitions.

Inaugurated in 1924, this major sports facility, located in Lescure Park, has a rich history. After hosting the football team FC Girondins de Bordeaux from 1938 to 2015, the stadium became the preferred playground for the rubgy club Union Bordeaux-Bègles (UBB) and the women's rugby team Les Lionnes du Stade Bordelais. Today, the Lescure Park district is undergoing major changes and new services and features should be available soon.

The Palais Gallien is today the only visible remains of the Roman city of Burdigala. Built in the early 2nd century AD, its original dimensions are impressive, 130 meters long and 114 meters wide. The amphitheatre was located on the outskirts of the ancient city. Games - often cruel - were held here before large crowds. 20-25 000 people could be seated on terraced rows of wooden benches! The Palais Gallien amphitheatre is listed as a Historical Monument. A few arcades and seating rows are still standing, and can be seen from rues du Palais Gallien, Albert Barraud, and Emile Fourcand.

In the centre of the vineyards that bear his name, Bordeaux raises its superb facades on the banks of the Garonne. An essential part of Bordeaux life, the Mériadeck skating rink hosts ice shows and ice hockey games while offering the public the opportunity to skate on an Olympic-sized track. The church of Saint-Bruno is the last architectural testimony of the prestigious Carthusian monastery built under the episcopate of Cardinal François de Sourdis, archbishop of Bordeaux from 1599 to 1628. It was consecrated by the Cardinal de Sourdis on March 29, 1620. Inspired by the Roman churches after the Council of Trent, it is the first Bordeaux testimony of Baroque art.

After the French Revolution in 1800 it became the Gironde prefecture, then an imperial palace and royal residence, until finally becoming the city hall in 1837.
